2 Billion More Coming for Dinner

A healthy, prosperous future for humanity rests not only on the shoulders of our leaders and policymakers, but also on the farmers and scientists who create the "simple" thing we need most: food.
In 2 Billion More Coming to Dinner, a young future farmer and her dad talk about how the old methods of farming achieved as much as they have, and how new techniques could be used to close the gap between how much food we have, and how much food we're going to need as global population approaches 9 billion. Between the fields and the farmhouse, the old farmer and the new teach and tease each other about their roles in feeding the biggest dinner party the planet has ever seen.
High-resolution data gathered by the University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment are rendered as spherical visualizations to show global cropland and pastureland extent, agricultural land devoted to food production and animal feed production, current agricultural productivity, and the gap between current yields and potential maximum yields, given sufficient water and fertilizer, and sustainable agricultural practices.
Additional datasets not incorporated into the film, but relevant to land use SoS programming, are also available. Downloadable visualizations include maps showing more detailed crop yield data, potential future yields, and global agricultural limiting factors (water, nutrients, and nutrients + water). All datasets developed by the University of Minnesota/Institute on the Environment/Global Landscapes Initiative.
