Its funny how you imagined the place you'd explore while this song plays is "like the thumbnail, but with more mountains", since Gaur Plains is very much a huge valley plain with lots of really unique mountains all throughout it. Seems like the music really does bring to mind the exact same scenary that it was used for.

Xenoblade tells the kind of stories that make people take spoilers very seriously. Probably why no one's been talking about that aspect of them.
These games also take place in very unique worlds. For instance, you got a good idea of the image of what Guar Plain looks like, but it might be interesting to know that this location is actually the leg of a gigantic titan.

Nobody really talks about the game itself because Xenoblade is one of those series that's honestly kinda difficult to really dig into conversationally without either a frame of reference of diving headlong into spoilers. Like... Nier level of spoilers that are sprinkled throughout the game. That said, they're real good if a tad overwhelming at times. There's just... a LOT to do.

I'm pleasantly surprised you listened to the original version. In the Definitive Edition, the Gaur Plains theme is remade using actual instruments, emphasizing flute, guitar, and violins. However, while more symphonic, the percussion is a little bit weaker. So I prefer the original.

  • @Biosleeve
    @Biosleeve Рік тому +6

I think you've got the idea from everyone that the soundtrack is just excellent, so I'll talk about the game itself (I've only played the first one and X). It's an open world action RPG that focuses on skills and teamwork, in that some skills hit an enemy with an affliction that another member of your team can take advantage of with their own skills, and so you end up chaining attacks together. This in turn influences who you put in your team, based on which attacks work together best for you - it's really fun. The number of sidequests is huge, and is only dwarfed by the size of the game itself. The game is split into several open world areas, with their own villages and sidequests. To give you an idea of the size I decided to run around the perimeter of one area, and it took over half an hour to do a lap. That's just one area.
Definitely worth playing if you're after another RPG fix, but just be prepared for how much game there is, especially if you want to play all 4!

What makes this particular track so freaking good for me is that in the game, up till this point the maps have been your home town and a cave, fairly big for a Wii game but standard, its when you reach gaur plains that its finally hit you how freaking big and alive and explorable the whole game is, and when you reach a new map the kind of give an intro scene of the map, and BOI when that drum drop happens its just freaking magical. This is me playing in My Wii Years ago, i didnt even know a wii game map could be that big and freaking alive and all of it its explorable, Xenoblade chronicles have a lot of fantastic maps moments

You should check out the Night versions of the Xeno OSTs! Every song has a day and night version for the most part, and they can drastically change how a song sounds ie. Satorl Marsh being a big example.

Xenoblade is becoming the Final Fantasy of Nintendo. I would even say that for the past 12 years Xenoblade games have been superior to FF games, so I think that says enough about the franchise.

And the Xenoblade 3 OST currently clocks in at around 12 hours. Truly massive soundtracks.
And yes, calling the franchise the better modern FF is probably accurate. But given the crew that works on it are veteran devs of the old FFs, some of the old Mana team, and Chrono Trigger devs, as well as the Xenogears devs, and on one occasion Nomura, that makes total sense.

As someone who loves the Xenoblade OSTs, there are some tracks that I think take away from the experience. Hostile Gazes and Enemies Closing In from Xenoblade 1 and the 2nd half of The Key We've Lost from X are prime examples of Battle Themes that needed to be cut from the game. Dannagh Desert from 3 too, though it's a field theme.

What's interesting about the Gaur Plain music to me is that it feels more like Xenoblade's main theme than the game's main theme to me - I think Xenoblade (Honestly, the entire franchise not just 1), I think Gaur Plain's music and _especially_ the first few bars of it.
Basically overworld music, yeah. While the game doesn't have a world map like PS1 Final Fantasies had, it has wide, open, environments between significant locations and Guar Plain is the first of those, after an extended tutorial segment where you go through a couple of mini-dungeons and do a bunch of town stuff in fairly closed environments that are still large enough to do a lot of side quests in. This is when the game really starts to open up following the inciting incident and first real dungeon of the game.
Since you asked, it's a JRPG with realtime combat that uses an auto-attack system so you only really need to worry about positioning and what special abilities to use and when to use them. One of my favourite realtime battle systems in a JRPG, actually (Particularly the way a few of the status elements work and flow into each other).

The important world building/lore is always front and center, but if you want some more, the quests are there
What, you wanted the quests to contribute nothing at all?
Also, I am pretty sure the only thing that gets "dropped" is the Flame Clock system, but that's for the gameplay to interact directly with the story, as pointless as it was to make a whole ass mechanic surrounding that, it was SUPER effective at showing us the circumstances the characters were in, but I digress, aside from that, everything introduced in the main plot is important and what is important gets adressed whenever necessary, everything else; the fluff, is kept for side content, which is what makes this game have the best side quests in the franchise (not saying just for myself, a LOT of people say that, I'm just backing them up)

Gaur Plain was the only Xenoblade song I listened to before buying the game. This song alone convinced me to get the game lol. Probably one of the best song to start with for someone who never played Xenoblade. Like you said, it's simple, but it's very easy to get into the groove with, and everything is balanced very well.
There is one "bad song" I can think of. And it's not bad, but more like, very repetitive, and it does hurt your ears if you play it on repeat with headphones on lol.

I don't know about bad, per se, but *Xenoblade Chronicles X* is by far the most divisive within the series in terms of its soundtrack. The whole game is very different from the numbered games, for that matter, where almost everything aside from the foundation of the combat is a fairly radical departure. The soundtrack, likewise, is a major departure from the first game. It's an extremely different style and it's the kind of thing you probably either just like or you don't. It might be one of the most divisive aspects of the entire game, actually.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of most of it, and I say that as someone who otherwise really enjoyed the game! Like the standard battle theme ("Black Tar", iirc), I don't really care for it. Still, even X's soundtrack does have its share of individual winners. Check out "Sylvalum Night" sometime, for an example.

Any bad music in Xenoblade? I'd say the only music I'd call "kinda boring" would be from XB1, the quiet music that often plays during ominous cutscenes where not a lot is going on- but I mean it does its job and it doesnt stand out as bad music, it fits the cutscenes it plays in, you just notice how kinda, i dunno, bland it sounds compared to everything else when listening to the entire soundtrack one after the other. But I guess thats just because the rest of the ost is standout amazing.
