Richard showed them. Venus is still playing while all the others have burned out.

It think Venus has satisfactorily answered all of the questions Dr. Thomas Tutko posed in this piece. I think she adjusted rather well as an adult. Outside of her long, storied and active pro tennis career, she owns an athletic apparel company. So, when pro tennis is finally over, and who knows when that will be, she should already have something to fall back on. No retraining needed here. And from what I've read she's very dedicated to the company's success. I remember when both Venus and Serena, once they became fixtures in the pro tour, were heavily criticized for playing in too few tournaments. They didn't play enough, was the mantra from notable commentators. They enrolled in college courses, instead of playing tennis. They went to fashion shows, instead of playing tennis. They did everything, except play more tennis. In hindsight, this strategy of playing in fewer tournaments may have played an important role in their individual success and longevity.

I never would criticize someone if they take a different path. Which early on the Williams sisters did. Probably why they are still playing, and winning. Though I do think it cost both of them a couple of GS titles. I just hope Serena gets 24 and 25. Their story is an American dream.

Richard Williams followed his plan for his daughters and it worked to perfection. Kudos to King Richard: "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail."

MEN Kae junior rankings don't matter. She probably got a wild card. Sometimes there are qualifying tournaments.

Venus was one of two wild cards in this 1994 tourney. The other was Meilen Tu. As I understand it, wild card spots are sometimes set aside in tournaments for the local up and comers in the sport. It's a way to help promote and grow the game, and give the youngsters quality match time against higher ranked veterans. However, tournaments may grant a wild card to whomever they wish, as long as they meet governing body qualifications. For example, Maria Sharapova was a wild card in the 2017 U.S. Open.
