Wow, didn't expect so many people to see this! Here's AN IMPORTANT UPDATE: Since I posted this video SO MANY NEW PRODUCTS have been released and many of them could be more worth your money than the things I talk about here. With digital bind-and-fly drones being more accessible as well as new controllers, goggles, and accessories, make sure to do some research before you buy something right away! Check out my "FPV Drone Kits at Every Price" video for some updated gear!

Thanks for your series, it's been useful for me. There are gear choices and then there is the learning how to make every thing work together. Things like first time binding and not knowing there's a bind button on the receiver, updating firmware on all of your equipment, getting your radio set up, chaning things like your stick deadband in beta flight and more, trouble shooting things like video when it disappears, and brushing off your soldering skills because there's a good chance you'll need to fix something at some point in time.

I always find it comforting when I look into something and A: find someone like you, there is always a few folks out there that remember getting into something and want to help folks avoid the mistakes they made. and B: Seeing the video is a bit dated. I like the idea I missed a big push or fad, and that folks prolly have some SOPs going for all this stuff by the time I get into it. Good stuff, will be visiting the channel often as I curse my way through the journey.

  • @DNBaccount

This video is very accurate. Coming from a cinematic pilot with DJI drones I thought this would be a breeze but it took me a long time to get the drone from the ground. I never used a sim but I hightly recommend that you do. I also think it's better to BUILD a drone because buying an RTF kit teaches you NOTHING about soldering, fixing problems, troubleshooting,.. So try to learn how to solder and get building. Besides the drone, controller,.. you will need a lot of extra materials such as shrinktubing, tape, tin, different kind of screws,.. These you will buy eventually during the whole process.
For me the whole learning curve was actually pretty OK after a while and I followed these steps for myself: Learn to hover, learn to fly straight, learn to go left and right by combining yaw and roll and eventually your will have to work on your throttle control. I started out with learning Split-S and powerloops and the rest followed eventually.
It's a cool hobby but you need a lot of patience because sometimes it can get really frustrated.
Also: BUY A LOT OF PROPS! For me the Dalprop 5046C work well on my 4S build and for cruising I normally use HQ 5x4.3.

Ive been doing FPV for years now. Its nice to see newbies coming in and I like the quality at which you are presenting your content. I fall under the category of people that will tell people unless you learn how to rip your drone apart and put it back together, youre not going to have a good time in this hobby. So I will have to respectfully disagree with you on that. In my experience the amount of parts that break and require you to replace them via soldering will start to get intense as you go for heavier quads that haul bigger cameras. But I can see that you are relatively new to this. Time will teach you all those. Keep at it. I like the direction you are taking!

Hi! Great video! First video I've ever watched from you, and I will be checking out more.
One fact I would like to correct, as of august 2022, the Taranis Q X7 radio comes with a short USB-A to Mini-USB cable.
The radio lets you charge the battery with the battery connected. I use a longer USB-A to Mini-USB that I've had for a standing microphone at my desktop setup to charge and connect my radio to my PC. So there's actually no need to buy a charger for the Taranis Q X7 in the beginning, before you buy a drone and several other batteries as you recommend.
I am currently at the first stage, by playing Liftoff and researching which drone to go for my first.
I opted in to buy the radio controller because I wanted a more realistic approach to my testing phase.

I took the whole lockdown period to start.
I know i can take some stress, so here's what i did for my first drone:
X8 octacopter- redundancy. I took two carbon fibre 250 frames and combined them(just the arms part) to make a X8 frame.
F3 deluxe- ms5611 barometer and gps for position hold
    Runcam v3 cam
I just bought 15 lg hg2 lithium cells , made a 3S 5p pack myself.(i made a capacitive spot welder to sport weld batteries.)
I bought fysky i6 transmitter modded it to 10 channel.
Ia6b receiver modded for 10 channel and again a small mod to transmit the whole 3S voltage back to.
There were a few things more.
All in all, i modded the fuck out shit to make a drone with redundancy and a flight time upwards of 35 minutes. I lost sanity a fee times but now i can say i have a very nice endurance drone under 400 USD.

@@MattPochwat Hello again! I am from the Argentine Patagonia, I wanted to ask you the following. I'm about to start this hobby and I would like to start with digital goggles, since I think it's the technology to be used, am I right? Is DJI Goggles the only one available right now? I would like to buy everything now, mini drone whit digital view, free style drone, and cinematic too, and its spare parts. because it takes 1 month to arrive from the USA to my city.
Ill follow your advice, first slot time whit simulator, alot time whit the mini drone, etc.
What do you recommend me? To buy? Thank you very much and many successes with your UA-cam channel. I think it will be one of the best.

@@federicomagri8022 Hey, so keep in mind, I'm not an expert. I focus on the basics because that's what I know best at the moment. There may be other digital goggles available but the dji set is the only one worth getting at the moment. You will also not be able to use the dji goggles with a micro drone like the tinyhawk. From my understanding the dji system requires you to use their camera and module which you have to wire into the drone you are using. They are simply too big and heavy for the micros. I would also recommend that you start with one drone if possible. Maybe two of the same drone so that you can swap parts when you crash. I also live in South Korea and it takes a long time for parts to come in. That wait time is going to be unavoidable. Make sure you know exactly what drone frames and components are compatable with the fpv system and that you are comfortable installing it yourself before you buy

Also, Joshua Bardwell is probably the best resource for getting help with your drone builds. I would highly suggest downloading the discord app and joining his community. There are many people there that will be able to answer your questions. Many pilots with much more experience than me

Great video man! One tip I have is to not be overconfident after "figuring out the sim". Just because you can rip in the sim doesn't mean it directly translates to real life.

thanks Matt..yup been flying for a few years freestyle...started with a small drone...then bought the real flight simulator...and practiced just getting orientation with a larger drone non race..after that learned non altitude hold throttle management, then more sim, then tricks....more Sim,,,,then finally a racer. 3 months. IT can be done.

i honestly think wanting to do real fpv without being ready to learn (or at least to handle) some basic electronics is like wanting to hack without being willy to code.

You really need to know the most basic stuff like what positive and negative mean and how to read a diagram, designing boards and replacing components is a totally different thing but knowing the basics required to build a drone yourself (premade parts that work together) is really required.
There is no point buying a bind and fly drone and then not knowing how to replace and esc or motor or even damaged wire, you need to know at least some basics unless you want to buy a new drone everytime it breaks.

Getting into FPV after a month of flying a DJI MAir2, flying Acro or 3D modes in liftoff sim was sobering to say the least. Pitch and roll control has been a tough adjustment after flying the DJI. Definitely starting out with a tiny hawk RTF kit since I can use it as a loner to get friends into the hobby if I end up bumping up to more serious gear down the line. If I don’t, then I’ll always have a fun little whoop that can holt a 360go cam to bust out from time to time.
