Drukqs is not only his most mature and ambitious work, but one of the most ground breaking, underrated and misunderstood albums of all time. Also, how about a Nine Inch Nails discography next?
Not sure it’s so misunderstood as it is underappreciated (debatably). What is there to understand? The form? Technique? The intent? Maybe people don’t appreciate the flow of the album. I personally think it’s one of Drukqs’ most effective attributes. I also think it’s one of his most coherent albums, which obviously many disagree with! In general though, I’d say most of Richard’s work is given tons of credit by now. And the only things it takes people more time to come around on are his noisier and more conceptual releases. Does everyone love the MIDI robots stuff? It’s a subtler listen than most Aphex, but both what you hear and the vision it’s working toward are pretty remarkable Sorry if I’m rambling.
@@Matt-ju9si I'd say it's misunderstood because a lot of people just think it's a random arrangement of tracks he's written, but I love the mix and variety and I think that the order that he's put the tracks in feels very deliberate and beautiful.
Of course props for putting together a great video on the man the myth the legend but the title as false, everybody SHOULD have to listen to aphex’s whole discog
I think most of us hate the term IDM lol. It isn’t based on the sound at all, and is simply used to group together electronic music that is meant for intent listening instead of dance. It’s crazy that Flying Lotus and RDJ are both part of “IDM”. But I guess it was inevitable that such a term would be created.
Computer Controlled Instruments was actually real instruments being controlled by computers, hence the name. In an interview it was said that the EP was a follow-up to Squarepusher’s “Music For Robots”
1. Richard never coined the term, "IDM" and is quoted as saying he actually hates the term, and thinks it's musically 'snobbish', which he also hates (musical snobbery). 2. Richard however did coin the term, "Braindance" which unfortunately never caught on. (ironically, the term "IDM" apparently spawned from North America. Probably from some music critic snob.) Go figure 🤷🏻♂️
well I don't know who "officially invented" the term IDM, but the reason it exists is the Aritficial Intelligence compilation, so if anything that compilation is to blame
The term IDM was coined in reflection on the Warp Records compilation "Artificial Intelligence" - and was used to describe the somewhat more experimental flavor of dance music it featured. Artificial "Intelligence" hence "Intelligent" Dance Music.
Transitions from song to song don’t need to be smooth to work IMO. Drukqs to me flows beautifully and works amazing as a whole, it’s my favorite of his because of this. The beauty lies in the contrasts between the tracks and the journey it takes you on and realizing you can let go of needing consistancy of sound is a really freeing feeling, in terms of Drukqs especially.
CCAIP2 IS made entirely with acustic instruments. He had a robot builder from the Netherlands make the gear to control the acoustic instruments and then programmed them to play the instruments. Those are actual drums, pianos, etc. you are listening to. And that is why Richard himself called it part 2 - part 1 are the more quiet tracks on Drukqs. He has stated this online in comments on his own bleep shop.
I’m surprised that you listened through his entire studio discography and came away from it wishing for a conventional album structure. Part of what makes his music so enjoyable to me is that it challenges all those conventions and gives these initially outlandish ideas some inherent beauty, including his album structures. It’s not about having two tracks that sound similar coming one after the other or some meaningless transition between two tracks, to me that is a shallow expectation to be applied to something abstract like music. For example, if on Drukqs, all of the drill n bass tracks were lumped on the first half and all the piano on the latter half, the flow would be so awkward, people would get so bored when listening through because the pacing is so monotone. Try and take those jarring contrasts between tracks and imagine in your head that it *is* the perfect transition, you might start to feel the strength of some of these changes in atmosphere. Also quite surprised about your collapse take, to many fans it is the most impressive/original release from him in years - you said its uninspired so im interested to know of some other music that sounds anything like it, because i sure as shit can’t find any
Ha! I totally agree! Those crazy changes in tempo and mood are one of the best things about RDJ albums for me - and, for that matter, the reason why Syro did NOT really work as good as for example Drukqs for me.
I agree totally. I generally love all of his work, but 'drukQs', to me feels like his one true masterpiece. It completely incorporates every aspect of his sound (and soul, if he had one😆). The back and forth between chaos and comfort is divided consistently as well, not by track number, but by time. Disk one follows this ambient/meltphace ratio alternating track per track, starting with #1 'Jynweythek' : ~2-3min (ambient, odd track #s) into ~5-6min (meltphace, even track #s), equaling a ~7-8min cycle average. While disk two, for every 1 meltphace track ~6-7min, there are 3 ambients in between totaling ~3-4min, equaling a ~10-11min cycle. Altogether, ambient/soundscapes songs make up 38% of the entire double album, while taking up 20 out of 29 total tracks. I'm such a fucking nerd. Also, in the last track, 'Beskhu3epnm', he uses the same midi pattern from 'Logan Rock Witch' on the Richard D. James album, albeit a different midi patch + tempo change. Thought he could slip one past us, haha!
Collapse EP has some similarities to footwork music albeit with his own deconstructive spin on it. It particularly sounds similar to Jlin, so much so there was speculation that it was a collaborative effort before the ep released. That being said it doesn't descredit it at all, I absolutely loved that EP, may be one of his best works imo.
Honestly, you don't understand Drukqs at all. The disjointed, disorienting effect that you experience when listening to it is the point. It's meant to be confusing, surprising and unconventional, do you really think he put quiet piano pieces in between hardcore breakcore and sensory abuse because he didn't know what he was doing? No, it's clearly intentional, and done for good effect. The quiet tracks also serve as a palate cleanser that offset listener fatigue - if you've ever listened to a death metal album, you'll know that the constant aggression gets tiring after a while and loses its impact unless you get a break from it.
Hard disagree about Drukqs. The piano pieces offer a respite to the hammering drum patterns. I think if you had an album full of Ziggomatic or 54 Cymru it'd be overwhelming, even with their pretty melodic moments. Loved the vid though, good work, dude :)
IDM/Braindance refers to music that gets your brain dancing. I often will have lots of interesting visuals listening to IDM. Moreso than most other genres. Like my brain is making it's own music video.
Great video and mad respect for putting your opinion out there. I'm a relatively new fan of AT as well and while I disagree with some of your points I understand that some of his albums don't really flow. I still think Drukqs is his best album and that's because his work eventually grows on you the more you listen to it. You said you like flow and mentioned C418 - I'm curious what's your take on 185 and its seamless transitions?
If there’s any artist for which I’d fully recommend a deep dive into their back catalog, it’s RDJ. A lot of the obscure EPs and stuff under pseudonyms isn’t as mindblowing as his main album material, but it is all still worthwhile and was all made earnestly. Listening through all his 90s albums, EPs, singles, remixes, etc gives a super detailed story of how his style and use of new technology evolved each year.
Meh your young... the Didgeridoo and Xylem Tube eps were the bomb when they came out. There was nothing that sounded like them at the time, as for repetitive alot of the techno that came out a few years later and to this day beats beats it hands down.
Lol this is funny. You should've been there when these albums were coming out in real time. RDJ never gave a shite how his music came across, and that was (a small part of) why it was so groundbreaking. It baffled critics and listeners alike. The man is a true culture jammer. Enjoyed your video, thanks!
Great fucking video (except you didn't like ageispolis and disliked the actually pretty thought out flow of Drukqs) I don't know if i can request it here, but i would love to hear what you have to say on Radioheads discography. They have a lot of great albums. Or maybe you could take a look at Pink Floyd?
I think that Aphex Twin is not about the albums and discography, but more about the tracks themselves and creating new innovative sounds and melodies in them. He has over 12-13 hours of dump/unreleased material that could be compiled into dozens of albums, but I guess that Aphex Twin just isn't the type of guy that likes the concept albums. Besides, almost all of his commercial "albums" are mostly compilations/mixtapes, like selected ambient works 85-92. Still, great video, as an Aphex Twin fan I agree to most of the statements here, I only majorly disagree with Cheetah being one of his worst EP's, that's all!

But I don't think many artist would like the term 'intelligent' shoved onto their music as quite frankly it makes it sound like it's snobbery and a way of denigrating other musicians work.
I do not agree with you.
