I have noticed Mojo tends to exaggerate some of their info or word some things in a way that are easily misunderstood by non citizens. Like the red solo cups. They found out that a couple of countries found the plastic cups as s novelty and decided it must be common for everyone else.
America uses the Month/Day/Year format for a very simple reason. The British used to do it that way. I see "British Reaction to America" videos seem to forget is a lot of what we do here, is just what was brought to the states when people came over to the country. Which is why people say "American" English is closer to the traditional 17th/18th century "British" English than "British" English today.

Even then, the idea of an armed populace has been incredibly important to African American rights. There was so much anti-black and anti-minority violence that there often wasn't a day where news papers didn't cover a single story about racial violence. @@MoreAdamCouser If you go to a resturant and get bad service, you absolutely do not have to tip. What she means is that waitstaff get paid less than the U.S.'s minimum wage. They get paid like $2 maybe $4 an hour. The minimum wage varies by state with the lowest being $7.25 an hr and the highest being $16.28 an hr. So, tipping the waitstaff for good service has become highly pushed because they literally do not make enough to feed themselves, let alone pay bills, etc. And this is where flirting with customers and giving them top tier service comes in. You're basically selling an idea to your customers to be able to afford to live. Now, many would say... Just get a better job. Nine times out of ten it never happens because of the situations they are in. So, they end up stuck in a vicious severe poverty cycle. And the owners and managers are allowed to get away wth basically robbing them, by paying them $2 an hr and $4 if you've got a somewhat decent boss/owner. Now, this low pay happens mostly at restaurants. The waitstaff. And on top of what, whatever the server gets in tips. The managers make them tip the back (meaning they have to tip the cooks, dishwashers, etc everyone that works in the back.) The servers are forced to share their tips, every single server has to tip them. On top of that, cooks, dishwashers, etc. They tend to get paid more than the servers. So, they are literally living on scraps. Usually while trying to go to college and afford their needs and this is the closest place that has hours that doesn't interfere with college. Also a just barely 18 yr old thrown out of the house. A teen mom, etc,. The list of how and why you end up there is endless but the fact remains you are not treated as a human being by most people. Including your own boss. And not only that....But the behaviors, entitlement, etc of the customers gets worse every day. Full grown adults have tantrums at places like Walmart, basically any fast food place, nearly every coffee shop in this country. It's not only physically, but also emotionally and mentally breaking labor. All without being really properly paid or treated as human beings. But, no you do not have to tip bad, rude, abusive, neglectful staff. You tip the good staff. I thought I should clear up that misunderstanding and help you understand why tipping has always been such an important issue here. P.S. Love the videos and I absolutely love your accent.

Got to speak my mind about tipping in the US. I worked for more than one restaurant whose base pay (in 2022!!) was only $2.10 an hour! Restaurant workers can NOT live on that. They rely on tips to get them at least up to minimum wage. I will never forget one night, at closing time, I'd taken a load of dirty dishes to the kitchen to wash, and I heard someone crying. I set my dishes down and went to see what was wrong. I found another waitress, in a corner, on the floor, sobbing. I got down and hugged her and asked what was wrong. She had worked for 10 hours that day. And she was the sweetest, most helpful waitress there. She had only made $10.00 for the whole day in tips. Keep in mind this place only paid $2.10 an hour. This poor girl had only made roughly $30.00 for a 10 hour day. So yes, you should tip. Even for bad service. You just don't know how bad they have it. End of rant. Love you! ❤️

They did it for over 40 yrs and although they'd come home exhausted with swollen feet, they'd tell me stories that'd have me laughing or crying or sometimes ready to go smack someone on their behalf lol. I did NOT stay a waitress for long. Not my cup of tea. I have a very compassionate, sweet nature. And brush most things off. But you get to a point where you are ready to explode. I waited tables at some really low rent establishments. I never made anything as low as min wage, except a couple really bad days (over the course of years) that were just not busy. In fact, I could usually pull 15+/hour, better on holidays. I didn't really care about my hourly wages. Idk what was up with making $10 in tips in ten hours, but something was definitely up. Either the establishment was not doing business, that employee was not doing their job or your town sucks
My husband is a waiter. He’s very calm and collected. I, on the other hand, am not. That’s why I’m in an office job away from people. I worked in retail for many years and when I got out, I promised myself I would not go back. People have lost their minds…and it shows every single day. I could never put myself in a position where my financial wellbeing was placed in the kindness of people eating in a restaurant. And, with taxes being covered by hourly rates, wait staff can be hit by large amounts when their taxes are done.

We do have free health care for veterans (VA), the poor and destitute (MedicAid), and for retired people (MediCare). It may not be top of the line service, but it's there if people need it and apply for it. Those who pay for health insurance are those who CAN pay for it. I'm a Navy vet, on Navy disability, and MedicAid.
Where service can be denied coverage as 'not needed' when it is. There is no denial of service elsewhere. Here, insurance can refuse to cover something and you're fucked. That doesn't happen there. No third party without a medical degree deciding if you actually need the treatment. Can you tell I'm sick of insurance telling me I don't need my medical treatments for my disability?
It's not the best insurance though and vets get slighted constantly. So getting free insurance, because you can't afford it, equates to... We'll see what we can do, in a lot of cases.

I went through 24 hours of labor before they decided I needed a c-section. That's after my sh!t doctor dug inside me to break my water. I'm not one to complain, but she hurt me like hell. I'm about 18 hours in (after a nurse told me I HAD to lie a certain way) and a different nurse comes in and mentions pain killers. I was only sixteen. Scared to death and told I had to be in excruciating pain for the health of my child. After 24 hours they're checking my vitals and my child's heart beat. I have a ridiculously high fever and my son's heart rate is dropping quick. They rush me into the OR, do an emergency C-section. Mind you, I can feel just about everything. There was no time for full blockage pain. I had three children after that. No problem. But my first was absolute bs. I also ended up with a horrible infection in the incision. I could hardly walk while I was in the hospital and they all treated me like garbage. A week after going home I was changing my son and felt something running down my leg. I went to the bathroom and it was green and disgusting smelling. I called my husband and my mom. They called the doctors and my doctor wasn't available. They told my mom that I'm probably fine. That my sense of smell is just heightened because I just had a kid. My mom knew it wasn't right, took me to the hospital and the fill in doctor wasn't there. He was playing golf. Lol good Lord. Dude finally shows up, drains the infection, then lectures me about smoking cigarettes. I swear... Our system is so messed up.

It's the same here in Canada. The sticker price is never the price you actually pay as taxes get add on at the register. I honestly wish they'd change this and just include the tax in the sticker prize.
One possible cause of the enormous pride we in the US have in our military, outside of the fact that they are just top-notch professional, may be the disgraceful way they were treated during the Viet Nam war. At the end of that war people slowly started realizing how valuable each branch of the service is to our country and the pride started to return. I have only personal experience for this thought, totally without other data. My husband joined the military right after college in 1966 and served for 26 years. Our children and I went with him when we were allowed and waited for him when we were not allowed. The respect we received from society stated to grow slowly after the end of the war.

I did too and was surprised when we enrolled my son that his elementary school does. I live Indiana which is considered conservative. Maybe that’s why. I do agree with what the school teacher said on the video “we are all on the same team.” Instead of criticizing dumb things about one another let’s reminder ourselves each morning that we are all on the same team. At about 5:05 they cut from the pharmacy to a separate, grocery store. If a pharmacy has groceries they tend to be in a refrigerated section along one wall. It's mainly eggs, dairy, and some convenience frozen meals as well as lunch meat.
I'm from Arizona and our pharmacies have a relatively large grocery section with several isles of food and coolers and freezers along the wall. It seems like they are always adding more food products.

In South America and Mexico, nobody refers to the USA as “America”. I’m half Mexican, half Honduran, born in the USA, and I remember being in first grade when my dad taught me that people calling the USA “America” is wrong, and calling the people “Americans” is wrong. In Spanish, we call “Americans” “Estadounidense”, with translates to something like “united states-ian” (like Canadian or Cambodian). There’s even a song called “This is not America” by Residente where he goes into explaining what America really is and that it isn’t just the US. The world really does forget that the rest of us exist.
I had a stroke in 2019 and had to be transferred from one hospital to another by helicopter. It was a 10 minute flight from one town to another and I got a bill for $25,000. I was so pissed because I don't even remember the flight.
In the US as a foreigner, you will likely not see a gun in public. Most people who own guns have a home defence gun which is usually a handgun or shotgun, and a hunting rifle depending where you live. The majority of civs who carry guns on them are carrying them concealed and you will never know they even own one unless they tell you. It's especially rare to see civs with guns in highly populated areas like cities that often have much larger police forces. But ironically the cities are oftent he most dangerous because the gun crime is so much higher there. In rural areas it's much more common to have you neighbor be a gun owner and they often will use it to hunt or protect their property. I myself have recently killed two skunks that have been tearing apart our ducks and chickens.

for a big gulp (huge fountain soda) the cost of the beverage is around 5 cents- the major cost is the disposable cup. Restaurants can refill your drink without the extra cost of the cup so free refills is just good service
The sales tax being added to the price shown in the US makes a lot of sense: you become very aware of the percentage of sales tax that you must pay. Unlike in the UK, where VAT is included in the price shown and basically hidden from view. By the way, most sales tax in the US is somewhere about 6.0% to perhaps 9.5% unlike in the UK where you’re paying 20% VAT (!!) and you don’t even think about it - which suits your government just fine I’m sure.

I bought a meal that in the US would be $10 and then I paid $11 due to tax, however, the same meal in Edinburgh, Scotland was the equivalent to $17 and when I was told that literally 20% was VAT I had to laugh. Don't complain that we add it on the backside when you at least know what you're going to pay and why you're paying it. Just do yourself a favor and add 8-9% immediately in your head so you don't freak out at the cashier.
I think we should get rid of income tax (the government gets to dip into your wages before you even see them AND instead of minimum wage being enforced it’s listed pay MINUS taxes) We need a blanket sales tax and if the government was forced to stay within budget it would be enough.

The reason that most restaurants in the United States of America give FREE REFILLS is simply that the flavor syrup in the drink only consists of a small squirt and costs very little when combined with carbonated water and chunks of ice inside the relative large container!
We used to recite it in grade school every day. I was a weirdo in grade school though. I was raised in a Catholic family, but I became an agnostic very early on when I began to question things. By 4th grade I decided I was no longer going to say it, and that earned me a meeting with the principal and a call to my mother. I somehow talked them into letting me not say it without punishment. I always felt is was weird.
Not every state has a state sales tax. Only minimum tax on prepared goods, such as at the grocery store on hot food you can eat right away. Sales tax on furniture, cars etc. Our government does not offer free medical services.
There actually are free health insurance options (Medicare for seniors and Medicaid for low-income people), but they aren't available to everyone, and the coverage can be limited (you might still have out-of-pocket costs even with insurance, e.g. blood tests, specialists, certain medications, medical equipment, etc).
I saw a documentary on the Pullman Company just last month and it said they looked after their employees nicely. I've noticed that many of the YT videos about the US gratuitously bring up slavery, just to be sure to keep it alive, lest one consider the country without immediately thinking about slavery. Indentured servants choose to work this way to pay sponsored travel to the newly formed colonies, or later U.S., or as students to receive "on the job training". Today we call that an internship. Chattel Slavery was not voluntary. After emancipation, many former slaves did continue working as a kind of share cropper. While there is a movement on the political right fomenting a kind of white grievance that is trying to argue that slavery was almost a beloved institution that was there to help the poor blacks, let us remember that those slaves were stolen from their homes and often their families and forced into hard labor as property, not as human beings. Please, for the love of God, let us learn from our history and not try to change it so that children don't have to feel any guilt. No one living today is guilty of that kind of chattel slavery, we are, however complicit, at times, in allowing systems, such as law enforcement, or soft segregation, or allowing for different standards of education based on race. And, I hope we can agree that in the world today, and in the U.S. human trafficking is a real thing tied to the illegal drug industry, and sex slavery. Peace

When the company first started in 1964, it was a chain of low-price discount stores known as Consumer Value Stores. Like most "convenience" stores, it sold over-the counter medications as well as health and beauty aids. I agree with you, Adam, that videos from this producer make very broad statements that do not seem to be well vetted. On the other hand, I have often found more people I know living outside of the U.S. who share many of these ideas, though, with the internet and social media, and the fact that people around the world are learning so much more about each other, and our own cultures as well, that these differences are evaporating. This would have been much more true, I think, fifty years ago, than today. American movies and greater trade, things from all countries are often much more available regardless of where we live. On working: At certain office/corporate workplaces, in particular, people are often pressured to work longer hours than what they are scheduled as way of "showing that they're a team player." In some, taking paid time off/vacations is even subtly discouraged, even though more than 2-3 weeks of vacation per year is seen as "generous" at many companies. On drug prices: The cost of those advertisements is folded into the price people pay for the drugs. Note that the vast majority of drug *development* costs are paid for by tax money. Drug companies charge people extremely high prices and make egregious profits per item (e.g. charging $200+ per bottle for insulin that cost them $15 to make until recently) here because nobody in government is stopping them (with VERY rare exception), and they pay bribes...er, I mean, "use lobbying" to make sure things stay that way.

When we write the date, its because the vast majority of people say the date as "May Seventeenth," and not "The Seventeenth of May". Its quicker to say and not as clunky, so it made its way into how we write it too

Sales taxes can vary by area (even smaller than states). Some cities or counties vote for a "penny sales tax" (SPLOST) usually to help fund infrastructure. So one city might have 8% sales tax, and next city over has 6%. But really, that's something too detail-oriented to know for a simple visit to the US. DEFINITELY depends on the state. In AR, when my teenage son was working, his employer told him that if he worked 10 hours, he didn't HAVE to provide him a lunch. I looked, while technically, he was correct, my son wasn't 18, so those rules didn't apply. He ALSO tried to tell his employees that if they did take a break and got food, they HAD to buy from his on-site restaurant or they didn't get the break. Buy at FULL PRICE, even. No discount! 😂😂 I sent a few emails about it to a few people and he changed his practice quite quickly.

I totally agree with you! Her saying America obsesses over the military is extremely insulting. My husband spent 19 years in the Air Force, fought in 3 wars and numerous “Government Actions” to aid other countries, and he incurred a traumatic brain injury that ended his military flying career and changed his entire life. When people approach him to thank him for his service, he is very humbled but also very grateful to know people appreciate the life he gave and the years away from his family and all the holidays and birthdays, sports games and dance recitals he missed because of the deep need he felt to protect the people of this Country and that need was greater than the desire to fulfill his love of being with his family. He truly is my hero, and we don’t think America is “obsessed” with loving their soldiers. It’s called gratitude for being able to walk the streets at night without fear of bombs and missiles being fired at us.
Open carry vs concealed carry are very different and often most people conceal carry. Honestly once you do it a few times it doesn't feel that weird it's kind of like just putting your wallet in your pocket.
@TheCAB207 Yup, it's just a part of normal everyday life. Even though we have constitutional carry here I still got my Texas license to carry. I can carry a few extra places with it but that's not why I got it. I got it because anytime I walk into my FFL I just quickly fill out the 4473, pay my transfer fee and walk out. No calling in for the background check at all since it's already been done.
I never leave my home without my gun. I don't open carry but I have the gun toting pocketbooks. My husband open carries but will usually have a shirt to cover his pistol. I was a a store in line and one lady saw a man that was open carrying and she was going to freak out. When asked why she was upset she just didn't think anyone needed a gun. In the line of people of ten six of us had guns. I told her that if someone comes inside the store with a gun to rob/kill someone then I would make sure to yell this lady is unarmed so rob her first. She went from being cocky to actually realizing her stupidity. A man told her that legal gun toting citizens call people like her targets. We will make sure to not ever protect her, but let her go and reason with the bad guy. She couldn't believe noone with a gun would protect her. Told her we have a right to defend ourselves, but those that are against have the right to become targets and let us know who we need to defend ourselves against. She was mad that we legally had guns and really mad that we would choose not to defend her. Can't fix crazy is the lesson learned that day!
Adam let me tell you my experiences with health care costs. In '07 I had both knees replaced at the same time, and between the surgery, hospital stay, rehab, and home nurse coming to my home 3 times a week came to right around $500,000. And that doesn't include the months off work and the revenue I lost there. Now in '22 I became a double amputee, losing one foot and half of my other foot. For the surgeries, rehab, and initial prostheses, as well as home nurses coming in 3 times a week cost roughly $600,000-$700,000. Now the prosthesis for my entire foot is another $25,000 for a permanent socket (what my stump goes into) which lasts only a couple of years and that will be for the rest of my life. As to the ambulance expense, they won't deny a ride, instead opting to bill the patient directly. These costs are usually $750-$1,200. You see now how we go bankrupt from medical bills? As to the question as to what mojo is smoking, the answer is simple - WAY better than I've ever had. And I smoke weed regularly! If you want to know more, just ask!

I could write you a book about why the tipping is the way it is. To make it short, most states have a law that restaurant servers are paid $2.13 per hour. Servers are required to claim 100% of the tips that they get, as wages earned. So, they have to pay taxes on all of those tips. If the amount of tips they claim, isn't at least 10% of the total amount of sales that a server had, our government will hound them. Since the server has to pay taxes on the money they make in tips, the $2.13 they make per hour, all goes to paying the taxes. So, for example, if a family paid a bill of $50.00, but did not leave a tip, the server ends up having to tell our government that they got a $5.00 tip. If the restaurant had to pay servers a higher wage, the menu prices would go up, potentially, a lot.
Thats not true about having to claim the $5 tip. I used to work for $3.25 an hour as a waiter and yes you live off tips, but to be fair, most need to treat people nice to get better tips. If you treat people like garbage, you dont deserve a tip. Goto San Francisco, where they get minimum wage and force a tip as part of the bill. Wait staff have no incentive to treat people like they should. I have seen waiters tell people to leave for having a different political opinion, and they still get min wage and a 15% tip. Thus, the reason restaurants are closing down in Commiefornia. Tips are a performance evaluation for every customer interaction. It's actually the best way to do it. If you deserve a tip most people are generous and will reward good service. If you work at starbucks or Subway, you dont deserve a tip. You already get minimum wage. If that's not enough to live on, get a better job. If you agree to a contract, then whine you dont get treated fairly, then Do Better and find a BETTER job. It really is a simple concept.
@@nathanmclaughlin304 It's absolutely true! The IRS requires that a server has to claim 10% of their sales, as tips made. If a table doesn't leave 10% on a $50.00 bill, the server has to make up the difference.
@darrinlindsey I have literally never seen that. If you actually have a receipt that shows no tip, you are not required to pay 10%. Where I worked gave us a printout showing how much we received thru tips every january. And yes, it is income, so you have to pay taxes on it. But if you are making 50K a year as a waiter, then you should. Even with the tips, I always received a refund during tax time. Also, tipping isn't REQUIRED in America unless in Commiefornia where they started putting it on ticket as a service fee. Even then, you can refuse it. I believe in tipping only if you do your job to the customers' satisfaction. Tipping is NOT required in America. And btw if you can show me where in tax code it says what you are saying, I will apologize. The last time I had to worry about it was over 8 years ago, so something could have changed. I've seen a few people on the internet make a fuss over "America" vs "United States" and I'm not sure where they're from. But Canadians, Mexicans, Chileans, Brazilians, etc don't say they're from America or even North/South America. It's not confusing for anyone. It's just something people like to nitpick us over.
"Brand Name" soft drinks generally cost about $0.09 for 2 liters. This includes manufacturing, transportation, and retail "storage" costs. Fountain drinks actually work out to a cost of $0.01 for an extra large drink. The "average customer" refills a medium(or larger) cup once. The people who buy extra large don't refill "on average", but it's close. Might as well say they do. So it costs them $0.01 and they charge between $1.45 and $1.90, almost all profit. The only thing the food places care about is making sure there is a decent supply chain in place.
You normally wouldn't go to the pharmacy for milk, it's more like you go to the pharmacy for the pharmacy, but you can pick up a few things while you are waiting for an order to fill. It is a bit unusual, but you can't deny the success of convenience. Don't need to grab a lot? Have an order to fill? You don't have to go to two separate places. It makes money.
In Japan it is considered a huge insult to tip. They believe that tipping basically insinuates that the tipper was basically bribed to receive better service when it fact that stellar service is the standard. The Japanese take great pride in the service they give and a tip spits in the face of that. Like it or not, its a horrible practice in the US. People should be paid a living wage and not have to rely on handouts to survive, especially since they work just as hard as anyone else.

I busted my ass for these people and at the end I only made 23 dollars. 23 fucking dollars on a 1400 bill, man I was ready to set that restaurant on fire..😂 Sure, you have the potential to make more from tips but you give up on the consistency which is important when it comes to paying your bills. The small talk about the weather is definitely a thing over here, and it can happen anywhere, at the barber shop, if you're a service worker going into someone's house and they just want some small talk, standing on the street corner, in line at the grocery store and just about any other situation you could imagine yourself in where you're standing next to someone you've never met before. Which isn't necessarily a requirement because it could be someone you know and small talk about the weather is still probably going to take place.
Sometimes getting a tip that is barely anything is more insulting than no tip at all. If you're a poor server and get tipped less than even a dollar it shows you how the customer is REALLY upset and not going to let it slide by giving you nothing, especially since tips are usually split between the server and the bust person
When my daughter go rush to the hospital, I got the paramedic bill when she was driven to the hospital, the ambulance was charging $650 per mile and that was back in 2011. The insurance had to paid for it, once I sent the bill to the insurance company.
Most ambulance companies don’t submit a claim to insurance until the patient contacts them and provides their insurance, and sometimes have to fight with them to bill the insurance. This also a charge that insurance will pay regardless of whether or not they are in network with the patients insurance, this is because the patient has no control over which ambulance company is used.

Everything is kept in drawers out of the view of the customers. In my city we have 6 big grocery stores. 4 sell tobacco and have drug stores inside them. Walmart doesn't but has a drug store... And I don't think iga has either its pretty small in comparison. When I was a kid I'm pretty sure each cashier at the drug store had some behind them for sale.
Having lived in Trinidad and Tobago, England, France, Germany , Spain and Belgium, I confirm that 1. I have never heard a Spaniard or a Belgian talk about their army. Germans actively avoid it. 2. Disposable plastic cups are not usually red (most often they are white) and are typically smaller than solo cups 3. You won't find peanut butter in Carrefour, Auchan, Delhaize or any of the big continental grocery chains... unless they put it in the 'foreign goods' aisle for a limited time as a novelty item. Incidentally, it's also super hard to find cheddar cheese 😢. 4. I get a 1.5hr lunch break. I do think my lunch break was shorter when I lived in the UK though.
I'm 63. When I was 18 it was legal to drink at 18. In the US, if an establishment offers fountain drinks the refills are free, but if they only offer cans or bottles then you have to pay for each bottle or can. Tipping has become stupid in the US. When I was a teenager and young adult tipping was like in Europe, you only tipped up for extraordinary service. But as time went on, restaurant workers stopped paying their workers minimum wage so now workers depend on tips. It gets stupider all the time. Now they even have the tip jar out at places that are paid minimum wage.
Ambulance providers are sometimes independent from the hospital. When I was 21 I was charged for the ambulance, ER room, the Doctor, medication and X-ray/imaging separately. I was able to make small monthly payments (under 100$) with no interest. A court of law will not allow your account to be sent to collections if you are making payments. (In Indiana) That being said the year my son was born, my husband had a kidney stone and my son needed surgery. We didn’t make enough to consolidate the bills and we did a medical bankruptcy. We have always had health insurance. We were back on track in 2 years and now own a home. Bankruptcy is part of our constitution to avoid things like poor or work houses of the past.
I've heard that a lot of wait staff prefer tips. Depends on the restaurant & the location. There's a place here in Jacksonville, FL called European Street Cafe. The food is mostly German sausages, sandwiches, & salads. One of their locations is near a major hospital in a high income area. Their turnover rate is very low. They can make thousands a week.

Yes, the drinking age was 18 until the government decided the best way to "make" the states accept a ton of money for infrastructure repair and construction was to say they'd only get the money if they raised the drinking age to 21. Louisiana held out for a while, if I remember correctly, but it soon became law in each state. That was the sticking point - the drinking age (and ability to drink at all) is a state, even local, issue, not the federal government. When the feds want the states to do something, they dangle a bunch of cash and say, "you can have it, but...." and we end up with these crazy driving (16), voting/military (18), drinking (21). Maaaaybe it causes fewer drunk driving incidents? But yeah, everyone either had a friend or raided their own parents' liquor cabinet before they were 21. Some had fake IDs!
Legal drinking age was 21, lowered to 18, raised back to 21 during the 70's. I was able to drink at 18, but it changed back 6 months before I turned 21 in 1979. All states were different, but I live in Michigan which was the first state to go back to 21.
In the 1980's I was a volunteer rescue squad member. We relied on donations and grants for our upkeep. The county that I served in took over our squad and began to charge patients for my services while I volunteered my time and skills. When I found out from a patient that this was happening (no notice from the county that this was happening), I quit. I thought I was giving back to the community by volunteering to help those in need when they were actually being charged a fee that was not covered by insurance at that time.

the lower wage with tipping is often reflected in the customer price. plus any server depending on tips that can't make it with the tips they may be in the wrong business. Servers that are successful usually love interacting with people. genuinely friendly servers make a decent wage well above minimum wage.
In the US, tipped workers don't get paid the same. They get paid 2$ per hour and your tips are required to get them to the actual minimum wage. Some states require the owners to pay the difference if they don't reach minimum but some do not.
I've worked in restaurants for over 30 years. Servers only get paid $3.50 or so an hour and live off of their tips. Bartenders make around $10 an hour and still get tips. In some places the cooks make $14 or so an hour and get tipped out also. It's a hard life.

He can be driving in a quiet car and just start on about how "look at those clouds, the farmers are gonna love that rain." You can even tell when you're driving behind him because he'll start gesturing exaggeratedly at the sky. We joke about it all the time. It's a common American joke, in my region, that all old men like to talk about is the weather. For some people, it can be a literal personality trait. Hell, old men aren't the only ones. Some conversations with anyone over the age of 40 will go on to talk about the weather IN THE PAST because they've exhausted the conversation on the present condition of the weather. When winter gets really rough, my mom loves to tell us about a massive blizzard that hit when she was a kid. There's a whole rant about how people's power went out and they had to get a hotel in town because it was that bad. As an American, conversations about the weather aren't a myth.

I see "British Reaction to America" videos seem to forget is a lot of what we do here, is just what was brought to the states when people came over to the country. Which is why people say "American" English is closer to the traditional 17th/18th century "British" English than "British" English today.

What she means is that waitstaff get paid less than the U.S.'s minimum wage.
They get paid like $2 maybe $4 an hour.
The minimum wage varies by state with the lowest being $7.25 an hr and the highest being $16.28 an hr.
So, tipping the waitstaff for good service has become highly pushed because they literally do not make enough to feed themselves, let alone pay bills, etc.
And this is where flirting with customers and giving them top tier service comes in.
You're basically selling an idea to your customers to be able to afford to live.
Now, many would say... Just get a better job.
Nine times out of ten it never happens because of the situations they are in.
So, they end up stuck in a vicious severe poverty cycle.
And the owners and managers are allowed to get away wth basically robbing them, by paying them $2 an hr and $4 if you've got a somewhat decent boss/owner.
Now, this low pay happens mostly at restaurants. The waitstaff.
And on top of what, whatever the server gets in tips. The managers make them tip the back (meaning they have to tip the cooks, dishwashers, etc everyone that works in the back.) The servers are forced to share their tips, every single server has to tip them. On top of that, cooks, dishwashers, etc. They tend to get paid more than the servers.
So, they are literally living on scraps. Usually while trying to go to college and afford their needs and this is the closest place that has hours that doesn't interfere with college.
Also a just barely 18 yr old thrown out of the house.
A teen mom, etc,.
The list of how and why you end up there is endless but the fact remains you are not treated as a human being by most people. Including your own boss.
And not only that....But the behaviors, entitlement, etc of the customers gets worse every day.
Full grown adults have tantrums at places like Walmart, basically any fast food place, nearly every coffee shop in this country.
It's not only physically, but also emotionally and mentally breaking labor.
All without being really properly paid or treated as human beings.
But, no you do not have to tip bad, rude, abusive, neglectful staff.

Got to speak my mind about tipping in the US. I worked for more than one restaurant whose base pay (in 2022!!) was only $2.10 an hour! Restaurant workers can NOT live on that. They rely on tips to get them at least up to minimum wage. I will never forget one night, at closing time, I'd taken a load of dirty dishes to the kitchen to wash, and I heard someone crying. I set my dishes down and went to see what was wrong. I found another waitress, in a corner, on the floor, sobbing. I got down and hugged her and asked what was wrong. She had worked for 10 hours that day. And she was the sweetest, most helpful waitress there. She had only made $10.00 for the whole day in tips. Keep in mind this place only paid $2.10 an hour. This poor girl had only made roughly $30.00 for a 10 hour day. So yes, you should tip. Even for bad service. You just don't know how bad they have it. End of rant. Love you! ❤️

They did it for over 40 yrs and although they'd come home exhausted with swollen feet, they'd tell me stories that'd have me laughing or crying or sometimes ready to go smack someone on their behalf lol.
I did NOT stay a waitress for long. Not my cup of tea. I have a very compassionate, sweet nature. And brush most things off. But you get to a point where you are ready to explode. I had to quit before that actually happened. Didn't want to spend time in jail lol

I waited tables at some really low rent establishments. I never made anything as low as min wage, except a couple really bad days (over the course of years) that were just not busy. In fact, I could usually pull 15+/hour, better on holidays. I didn't really care about my hourly wages. Idk what was up with making $10 in tips in ten hours, but something was definitely up. Either the establishment was not doing business, that employee was not doing their job or your town sucks
My husband is a waiter. He’s very calm and collected. I, on the other hand, am not. That’s why I’m in an office job away from people. I worked in retail for many years and when I got out, I promised myself I would not go back. People have lost their minds…and it shows every single day. I could never put myself in a position where my financial wellbeing was placed in the kindness of people eating in a restaurant. And, with taxes being covered by hourly rates, wait staff can be hit by large amounts when their taxes are done.

We do have free health care for veterans (VA), the poor and destitute (MedicAid), and for retired people (MediCare). It may not be top of the line service, but it's there if people need it and apply for it. Those who pay for health insurance are those who CAN pay for it. I'm a Navy vet, on Navy disability, and MedicAid.
Where service can be denied coverage as 'not needed' when it is. There is no denial of service elsewhere. Here, insurance can refuse to cover something and you're fucked. That doesn't happen there. No third party without a medical degree deciding if you actually need the treatment. Can you tell I'm sick of insurance telling me I don't need my medical treatments for my disability?
It's not the best insurance though and vets get slighted constantly. So getting free insurance, because you can't afford it, equates to... We'll see what we can do, in a lot of cases.

I went through 24 hours of labor before they decided I needed a c-section. That's after my sh!t doctor dug inside me to break my water. I'm not one to complain, but she hurt me like hell. I'm about 18 hours in (after a nurse told me I HAD to lie a certain way) and a different nurse comes in and mentions pain killers. I was only sixteen. Scared to death and told I had to be in excruciating pain for the health of my child. After 24 hours they're checking my vitals and my child's heart beat. I have a ridiculously high fever and my son's heart rate is dropping quick. They rush me into the OR, do an emergency C-section. Mind you, I can feel just about everything. There was no time for full blockage pain. I had three children after that. No problem. But my first was absolute bs. I also ended up with a horrible infection in the incision. I could hardly walk while I was in the hospital and they all treated me like garbage. A week after going home I was changing my son and felt something running down my leg. I went to the bathroom and it was green and disgusting smelling. I called my husband and my mom. They called the doctors and my doctor wasn't available. They told my mom that I'm probably fine. That my sense of smell is just heightened because I just had a kid. My mom knew it wasn't right, took me to the hospital and the fill in doctor wasn't there. He was playing golf. Lol good Lord. Dude finally shows up, drains the infection, then lectures me about smoking cigarettes. I swear... Our system is so messed up.

One possible cause of the enormous pride we in the US have in our military, outside of the fact that they are just top-notch professional, may be the disgraceful way they were treated during the Viet Nam war. At the end of that war people slowly started realizing how valuable each branch of the service is to our country and the pride started to return. I have only personal experience for this thought, totally without other data. My husband joined the military right after college in 1966 and served for 26 years. Our children and I went with him when we were allowed and waited for him when we were not allowed. The respect we received from society stated to grow slowly after the end of the war.
Thank your husband for me for his service. And thank you for the sacrifices you made so he could serve.
No one is anti military. People may have concerns over how the military is used, but we have a great respect for those who choose to serve.

At about 5:05 they cut from the pharmacy to a separate, grocery store. If a pharmacy has groceries they tend to be in a refrigerated section along one wall. It's mainly eggs, dairy, and some convenience frozen meals as well as lunch meat.
I'm from Arizona and our pharmacies have a relatively large grocery section with several isles of food and coolers and freezers along the wall. It seems like they are always adding more food products.

In South America and Mexico, nobody refers to the USA as “America”. I’m half Mexican, half Honduran, born in the USA, and I remember being in first grade when my dad taught me that people calling the USA “America” is wrong, and calling the people “Americans” is wrong. In Spanish, we call “Americans” “Estadounidense”, with translates to something like “united states-ian” (like Canadian or Cambodian). There’s even a song called “This is not America” by Residente where he goes into explaining what America really is and that it isn’t just the US. The world really does forget that the rest of us exist.

In the US as a foreigner, you will likely not see a gun in public. Most people who own guns have a home defence gun which is usually a handgun or shotgun, and a hunting rifle depending where you live. The majority of civs who carry guns on them are carrying them concealed and you will never know they even own one unless they tell you. It's especially rare to see civs with guns in highly populated areas like cities that often have much larger police forces. But ironically the cities are oftent he most dangerous because the gun crime is so much higher there. In rural areas it's much more common to have you neighbor be a gun owner and they often will use it to hunt or protect their property. I myself have recently killed two skunks that have been tearing apart our ducks and chickens.

The sales tax being added to the price shown in the US makes a lot of sense: you become very aware of the percentage of sales tax that you must pay. Unlike in the UK, where VAT is included in the price shown and basically hidden from view. By the way, most sales tax in the US is somewhere about 6.0% to perhaps 9.5% unlike in the UK where you’re paying 20% VAT (!!) and you don’t even think about it - which suits your government just fine I’m sure.

I bought a meal that in the US would be $10 and then I paid $11 due to tax, however, the same meal in Edinburgh, Scotland was the equivalent to $17 and when I was told that literally 20% was VAT I had to laugh. Don't complain that we add it on the backside when you at least know what you're going to pay and why you're paying it. Just do yourself a favor and add 8-9% immediately in your head so you don't freak out at the cashier.

We used to recite it in grade school every day. I was a weirdo in grade school though. I was raised in a Catholic family, but I became an agnostic very early on when I began to question things. By 4th grade I decided I was no longer going to say it, and that earned me a meeting with the principal and a call to my mother. I somehow talked them into letting me not say it without punishment. Not every state has a state sales tax. Only minimum tax on prepared goods, such as at the grocery store on hot food you can eat right away. Sales tax on furniture, cars etc.
Our government does not offer free medical services.
There actually are free health insurance options (Medicare for seniors and Medicaid for low-income people), but they aren't available to everyone, and the coverage can be limited (you might still have out-of-pocket costs even with insurance, e.g. blood tests, specialists, certain medications, medical equipment, etc).
I saw a documentary on the Pullman Company just last month and it said they looked after their employees nicely. I've noticed that many of the YT videos about the US gratuitously bring up slavery, just to be sure to keep it alive, lest one consider the country without immediately thinking about slavery. Like many jobs of the time, no prior education was needed, and that's where uneducated people found employment, no matter what their race.

Indentured servants choose to work this way to pay sponsored travel to the newly formed colonies, or later U.S., or as students to receive "on the job training". Today we call that an internship. Chattel Slavery was not voluntary. After emancipation, many former slaves did continue working as a kind of share cropper. While there is a movement on the political right fomenting a kind of white grievance that is trying to argue that slavery was almost a beloved institution that was there to help the poor blacks, let us remember that those slaves were stolen from their homes and often their families and forced into hard labor as property, not as human beings. Please, for the love of God, let us learn from our history and not try to change it so that children don't have to feel any guilt. No one living today is guilty of that kind of chattel slavery, we are, however complicit, at times, in allowing systems, such as law enforcement, or soft segregation, or allowing for different standards of education based on race. And, I hope we can agree that in the world today, and in the U.S. human trafficking is a real thing tied to the illegal drug industry, and sex slavery. Peace

[soap, shampoo, toothpaste, makeup, etc.] In 1967, it open its first full service pharmacy in a discount store. I agree with you, Adam, that videos from this producer make very broad statements that do not seem to be well vetted. On the other hand, I have often found more people I know living outside of the U.S. who share many of these ideas, though, with the internet and social media, and the fact that people around the world are learning so much more about each other, and our own cultures as well, that these differences are evaporating. This would have been much more true, I think, fifty years ago, than today. American movies and greater trade, things from all countries are often much more available regardless of where we live. On working: At certain office/corporate workplaces, in particular, people are often pressured to work longer hours than what they are scheduled as way of "showing that they're a team player." In some, taking paid time off/vacations is even subtly discouraged, even though more than 2-3 weeks of vacation per year is seen as "generous" at many companies.
On drug prices: The cost of those advertisements is folded into the price people pay for the drugs. Note that the vast majority of drug *development* costs are paid for by tax money. Drug companies charge people extremely high prices and make egregious profits per item (e.g. charging $200+ per bottle for insulin that cost them $15 to make until recently) here because nobody in government is stopping them (with VERY rare exception), and they pay bribes...er, I mean, "use lobbying" to make sure things stay that way.

Sales taxes can vary by area (even smaller than states). Some cities or counties vote for a "penny sales tax" (SPLOST) usually to help fund infrastructure. So one city might have 8% sales tax, and next city over has 6%. But really, that's something too detail-oriented to know for a simple visit to the US. Just be ready to pay more than the price you see under the item. For taxes.

I totally agree with you! Her saying America obsesses over the military is extremely insulting. My husband spent 19 years in the Air Force, fought in 3 wars and numerous “Government Actions” to aid other countries, and he incurred a traumatic brain injury that ended his military flying career and changed his entire life. When people approach him to thank him for his service, he is very humbled but also very grateful to know people appreciate the life he gave and the years away from his family and all the holidays and birthdays, sports games and dance recitals he missed because of the deep need he felt to protect the people of this Country and that need was greater than the desire to fulfill his love of being with his family. He truly is my hero, and we don’t think America is “obsessed” with loving their soldiers. It’s called gratitude for being able to walk the streets at night without fear of bombs and missiles being fired at us.
Open carry vs concealed carry are very different and often most people conceal carry. Honestly once you do it a few times it doesn't feel that weird it's kind of like just putting your wallet in your pocket.

I never leave my home without my gun. I don't open carry but I have the gun toting pocketbooks. My husband open carries but will usually have a shirt to cover his pistol. I was a a store in line and one lady saw a man that was open carrying and she was going to freak out. When asked why she was upset she just didn't think anyone needed a gun. In the line of people of ten six of us had guns. I told her that if someone comes inside the store with a gun to rob/kill someone then I would make sure to yell this lady is unarmed so rob her first. She went from being cocky to actually realizing her stupidity. A man told her that legal gun toting citizens call people like her targets. We will make sure to not ever protect her, but let her go and reason with the bad guy. She couldn't believe noone with a gun would protect her. Told her we have a right to defend ourselves, but those that are against have the right to become targets and let us know who we need to defend ourselves against. She was mad that we legally had guns and really mad that we would choose not to defend her. Can't fix crazy is the lesson learned that day!
Adam let me tell you my experiences with health care costs. In '07 I had both knees replaced at the same time, and between the surgery, hospital stay, rehab, and home nurse coming to my home 3 times a week came to right around $500,000. And that doesn't include the months off work and the revenue I lost there. Now in '22 I became a double amputee, losing one foot and half of my other foot. For the surgeries, rehab, and initial prostheses, as well as home nurses coming in 3 times a week cost roughly $600,000-$700,000. Now the prosthesis for my entire foot is another $25,000 for a permanent socket (what my stump goes into) which lasts only a couple of years and that will be for the rest of my life. As to the ambulance expense, they won't deny a ride, instead opting to bill the patient directly. These costs are usually $750-$1,200. You see now how we go bankrupt from medical bills?

I could write you a book about why the tipping is the way it is. To make it short, most states have a law that restaurant servers are paid $2.13 per hour. Servers are required to claim 100% of the tips that they get, as wages earned. So, they have to pay taxes on all of those tips. If the amount of tips they claim, isn't at least 10% of the total amount of sales that a server had, our government will hound them. Since the server has to pay taxes on the money they make in tips, the $2.13 they make per hour, all goes to paying the taxes. So, for example, if a family paid a bill of $50.00, but did not leave a tip, the server ends up having to tell our government that they got a $5.00 tip. If the restaurant had to pay servers a higher wage, the menu prices would go up, potentially, a lot.
Thats not true about having to claim the $5 tip. I used to work for $3.25 an hour as a waiter and yes you live off tips, but to be fair, most need to treat people nice to get better tips. If you treat people like garbage, you dont deserve a tip. Goto San Francisco, where they get minimum wage and force a tip as part of the bill. Wait staff have no incentive to treat people like they should. I have seen waiters tell people to leave for having a different political opinion, and they still get min wage and a 15% tip. Thus, the reason restaurants are closing down in Commiefornia. Tips are a performance evaluation for every customer interaction. It's actually the best way to do it. If you deserve a tip most people are generous and will reward good service. If you work at starbucks or Subway, you dont deserve a tip. You already get minimum wage. If that's not enough to live on, get a better job. If you agree to a contract, then whine you dont get treated fairly, then Do Better and find a BETTER job. It really is a simple concept.

Where I worked gave us a printout showing how much we received thru tips every january. And yes, it is income, so you have to pay taxes on it. But if you are making 50K a year as a waiter, then you should. Even with the tips, I always received a refund during tax time. Also, tipping isn't REQUIRED in America unless in Commiefornia where they started putting it on ticket as a service fee. Even then, you can refuse it. I believe in tipping only if you do your job to the customers' satisfaction. Tipping is NOT required in America. And btw if you can show me where in tax code it says what you are saying, I will apologize. The last time I had to worry about it was over 8 years ago, so something could have changed. "Brand Name" soft drinks generally cost about $0.09 for 2 liters. This includes manufacturing, transportation, and retail "storage" costs.
Fountain drinks actually work out to a cost of $0.01 for an extra large drink.
The "average customer" refills a medium(or larger) cup once. The people who buy extra large don't refill "on average", but it's close. Might as well say they do.
So it costs them $0.01 and they charge between $1.45 and $1.90, almost all profit.
The only thing the food places care about is making sure there is a decent supply chain in place.

You normally wouldn't go to the pharmacy for milk, it's more like you go to the pharmacy for the pharmacy, but you can pick up a few things while you are waiting for an order to fill. It is a bit unusual, but you can't deny the success of convenience. Don't need to grab a lot? Have an order to fill? You don't have to go to two separate places. It makes money.
In Japan it is considered a huge insult to tip. They believe that tipping basically insinuates that the tipper was basically bribed to receive better service when it fact that stellar service is the standard. The Japanese take great pride in the service they give and a tip spits in the face of that.
Like it or not, its a horrible practice in the US. People should be paid a living wage and not have to rely on handouts to survive, especially since they work just as hard as anyone else.

Second, not all wait staff do well on tips and you are entirely at the mercy of the people you are serving meaning zero consistency. I was a server for 2 years and it was the roughest working years of my life financially. I remember handling a table of 9 people and they ran up a 1400 dollar bill. I busted my ass for these people and at the end I only made 23 dollars. 23 fucking dollars on a 1400 bill, man I was ready to set that restaurant on fire..😂 Sure, you have the potential to make more from tips but you give up on the consistency which is important when it comes to paying your bills. You think my landlord cares about my 1400 dollar story? No. What he cares about is me having that rent money on time.
Every working person deserves to be paid properly. Tips should not make up the bulk of what you live on.

If you don’t have insurance always ask for an itemized bill, we have hospital out here charging mothers for the privilege of holding their newborns, all insurance companies do is fight off the bs charges so that you don’t have to.

The small talk about the weather is definitely a thing over here, and it can happen anywhere, at the barber shop, if you're a service worker going into someone's house and they just want some small talk, standing on the street corner, in line at the grocery store and just about any other situation you could imagine yourself in where you're standing next to someone you've never met before. Which isn't necessarily a requirement because it could be someone you know and small talk about the weather is still probably going to take place.

If you're a poor server and get tipped less than even a dollar it shows you how the customer is REALLY upset and not going to let it slide by giving you nothing, especially since tips are usually split between the server and the bust person

When my daughter go rush to the hospital, I got the paramedic bill when she was driven to the hospital, the ambulance was charging $650 per mile and that was back in 2011.
The insurance had to paid for it, once I sent the bill to the insurance company.
Most ambulance companies don’t submit a claim to insurance until the patient contacts them and provides their insurance, and sometimes have to fight with them to bill the insurance. This also a charge that insurance will pay regardless of whether or not they are in network with the patients insurance, this is because the patient has no control over which ambulance company is used.
when i was young the drug store closest to me had a huge tobacco section ... it no longer does .. but grocery stores that have their own pharmacy still sell lots of smokes

@@jcruz4759 I'm in BC Canada... Grocery stores still sell tobacco. But they are not allowed to advertise or show any of the packages. So you have to pretty much know what to ask for... Everything is kept in drawers out of the view of the customers. In my city we have 6 big grocery stores. 4 sell tobacco and have drug stores inside them. Walmart doesn't but has a drug store... And I don't think iga has either its pretty small in comparison. When I was a kid I'm pretty sure each cashier at the drug store had some behind them for sale.
Having lived in Trinidad and Tobago, England, France, Germany , Spain and Belgium, I confirm that
1. I have never heard a Spaniard or a Belgian talk about their army. Germans actively avoid it.
2. Disposable plastic cups are not usually red (most often they are white) and are typically smaller than solo cups
3. You won't find peanut butter in Carrefour, Auchan, Delhaize or any of the big continental grocery chains... unless they put it in the 'foreign goods' aisle for a limited time as a novelty item. Incidentally, it's also super hard to find cheddar cheese 😢.
4. I get a 1.5hr lunch break. I do think my lunch break was shorter when I lived in the UK though.
I'm 63. When I was 18 it was legal to drink at 18. In the US, if an establishment offers fountain drinks the refills are free, but if they only offer cans or bottles then you have to pay for each bottle or can. Tipping has become stupid in the US. When I was a teenager and young adult tipping was like in Europe, you only tipped up for extraordinary service. But as time went on, restaurant workers stopped paying their workers minimum wage so now workers depend on tips. It gets stupider all the time. Now they even have the tip jar out at places that are paid minimum wage.

When I was 21 I was charged for the ambulance, ER room, the Doctor, medication and X-ray/imaging separately. I was able to make small monthly payments (under 100$) with no interest. A court of law will not allow your account to be sent to collections if you are making payments. (In Indiana)
That being said the year my son was born, my husband had a kidney stone and my son needed surgery. We didn’t make enough to consolidate the bills and we did a medical bankruptcy. We have always had health insurance. We were back on track in 2 years and now own a home. Bankruptcy is part of our constitution to avoid things like poor or work houses of the past.
I've heard that a lot of wait staff prefer tips. Depends on the restaurant & the location. There's a place here in Jacksonville, FL called European Street Cafe. The food is mostly German sausages, sandwiches, & salads. One of their locations is near a major hospital in a high income area. Their turnover rate is very low. They can make thousands a week.

I remember seeing an episode of the show Adam-12 where they had lunch and the waitress really was cranky and unfriendly. Officer Reed left a very small tip. The waitress said "you call that a tip"? He said "no. It's a hint". Most people do not ride in ambulances. Here where I live the Fire Department and County Paramedics transport patients to hospital. If a patient wants to go to a hospital thats not the closest they ask for an ambulance and might have to pay.
Yes, the drinking age was 18 until the government decided the best way to "make" the states accept a ton of money for infrastructure repair and construction was to say they'd only get the money if they raised the drinking age to 21. Louisiana held out for a while, if I remember correctly, but it soon became law in each state. That was the sticking point - the drinking age (and ability to drink at all) is a state, even local, issue, not the federal government. When the feds want the states to do something, they dangle a bunch of cash and say, "you can have it, but...." and we end up with these crazy driving (16), voting/military (18), drinking (21). Maaaaybe it causes fewer drunk driving incidents? But yeah, everyone either had a friend or raided their own parents' liquor cabinet before they were 21. Some had fake IDs!
Legal drinking age was 21, lowered to 18, raised back to 21 during the 70's. I was able to drink at 18, but it changed back 6 months before I turned 21 in 1979. All states were different, but I live in Michigan which was the first state to go back to 21.
In the 1980's I was a volunteer rescue squad member. We relied on donations and grants for our upkeep. The county that I served in took over our squad and began to charge patients for my services while I volunteered my time and skills. When I found out from a patient that this was happening (no notice from the county that this was happening), I quit. I thought I was giving back to the community by volunteering to help those in need when they were actually being charged a fee that was not covered by insurance at that time.

the lower wage with tipping is often reflected in the customer price. plus any server depending on tips that can't make it with the tips they may be in the wrong business. Servers that are successful usually love interacting with people. genuinely friendly servers make a decent wage well above minimum wage.
In the US, tipped workers don't get paid the same. They get paid 2$ per hour and your tips are required to get them to the actual minimum wage. Some states require the owners to pay the difference if they don't reach minimum but some do not.

I've worked in restaurants for over 30 years. Servers only get paid $3.50 or so an hour and live off of their tips. Bartenders make around $10 an hour and still get tips. In some places the cooks make $14 or so an hour and get tipped out also. It's a hard life.
24:00 After the incident. We cannot be denied medical care in case of emergency, so we just get to get jumpscared by the bills later. That's the downside. The upside is that, unlike in the NHS system, doctors don't have that as a safety net for abuse of power as easily, and we can shop to any doctor we would like to, as long as we understand they may not take our insurance. We can fight harder against abuse, and for better medical care.
There are definitely people who love to talk about the weather. My grandfather could spend hours talking about the weather. He can be driving in a quiet car and just start on about how "look at those clouds, the farmers are gonna love that rain." You can even tell when you're driving behind him because he'll start gesturing exaggeratedly at the sky. We joke about it all the time. It's a common American joke, in my region, that all old men like to talk about is the weather. For some people, it can be a literal personality trait. Hell, old men aren't the only ones. Some conversations with anyone over the age of 40 will go on to talk about the weather IN THE PAST because they've exhausted the conversation on the present condition of the weather. When winter gets really rough, my mom loves to tell us about a massive blizzard that hit when she was a kid. There's a whole rant about how people's power went out and they had to get a hotel in town because it was that bad. As an American, conversations about the weather aren't a myth.
When I was in West Virginia., the pharmacy chains not only had food but a full liquor store...not just beer or wine.
