ive always been an admirer of Gandalfs staff. Not only is it rock hard but the sheer length and girth of it are truly impressive. a magnificent specimen.
From the first series or the hobbit series? I wonder, the concept of 'original' seems a bit funny. I had a part to play in the fabrication of the hobbit ones, and they were printed at different scales depending on who was holding them when filmed. They were also not the sturdiest things, so I would be a little surprised if they lasted this long, let alone the trip from New Zealand to London.
Your constant “cleaning of the pipe” cracked me up! 🤣 Gandalf does take a long time to clean it. Also the staff is super cool! I also just went and watched a clip of Gandalf at Isengard and his pipe WAS there! I had no idea, it’s so cool!
The Nail In The "Radagast" Staff Hearkens Back To The Original "Cone-Topped" Staff At The Beginning Of The Hobbit Where Gandalf Uses The Long Nail At The Base Of His Staff To Inscribe His Rune Upon Bilbo's Door TO Inform The Dwarves Where To Meet... The Radagast Staff Was Acquired From The Brown Istari When Gandalf Was Saved At Dol Guildur By Galadriel, Elrond, Saruman, And Radagast. It Is Upon Their Return To Radagast's Home That Gandalf Is Given The Staff Of Radagast, Crystal And All. While Radagast Used A Blue Crystal Strangely, In Gandalf's Possession It Became A White / Clear Crystal...Used By Gandalf Until Lost In Moria Against The Balrog!!
This is indeed from the Hobbit, upon further inspection to the staff from Fellowship there is an addition "G" rune carved into the side as well as a hole for a leather strap that holds a pouch. If you compare this to the same one Weta offered you will find those differences. Also it looked like the pipe was scratched inserting it into the staff, must be a super tight fit.
That is a nice collectable. You are amassing a good amount of Tolkien items. I recently went on a binge of decorating my home with Tolkien art, but I went the way of framed posters of the many different maps of Middle Earth and some architectural images of Bag End.
Is United Cutlery another maker of LOTR stuff? I live in New Zealand, so I've never bought any LOTR stuff from anywhere except Weta workshop. Does Weta not stuff overseas? Cool staff though bro.
There is a store in Hannibal MO that sells all the LOTR weapons just like this, same manufacturer. Also online. It is awesome to see them all in person.
Is this staff a solid piece? Is it hollow on the inside, or is it completely solid? Although a collectable item, could this theoretically be used to walk through the woods with? (Provided some protection is used for the bottom of the staff) Thank you, good people of Middle-earth.
You could use it as a walking stick. I’m sure it can take some weight if you actually use it for support while walking. Just think about it as being a frail old stick that you found in the woods that will break if you put way too much weight in it. Its a completely solid polysresin piece so its pretty heavy too. The bottom will definitely scratch and lose it’s paint job if you don’t provide any type of protection.
The cleaning of the pipe was hilarious! You are actually supposed to move it in a circular motion around the inside of the pipe walls. It scrapes off all the burnt tobacco and creosote from the sides and drops it into the pipe chamber so you can remove it by turning it over and dumping it out. You looked like you were trying to clear a pesky clog from a drain.
Now I'm imagining a much younger Gandalf- having just been introduced to the concept of pipes and and pipeweed by, I'm assuming, some hobbits- cleaning his first pipe in _exactly_ that manner while the halflings look on.
This just reminds me of one of the few questions I still have about LotR… where tf did Gandalf get all his replacement staffs? Like after his imprisonment at Isengard, where'd he get the Moria staff, and after his encounter with the Witch-King in the extended edition, where'd he get his replacement white staff?
I like to think that there are three degrees of power in all movie wizards. 3:Hands free, 2:Wand, 1:Staff, That is why it is my firm belief that Gandalf is the most powerful wizard in literature and film. Such a cool staff, I like how you can slot his pipe in the top. Very handy.
So according to the reviews on Amazon, you can put a working pipe in the slot for the pipe if you really wanted to have a working pipe for those who do...smoke
Question, I have the light up staff. I am trying to find an additional light capsule that goes inside of it because the one that I have is a little bit worn. Do you know where to get that? Also, it seems like the crystal that sits above it all, just sit loosely. Is that how yours is?
Now I am curious where all these staffs come from? Does Radagast make them all for Gandalf? Or is there some master staff craftsman living some where in Middle Earth?
So Saruman takes Gandalf's staff in Isengard, which was originally Radagast's staff. Then Gandalf gets a different staff that he loses while fighting the Balrog in Moria. Finally, his third staff is broken by the Witch King in the extended edition of Return of the King. Gandalf goes through staffs like Pippin goes through pipeweed 😳
Personally I always liked this staff the best out of all his others for its greater purpose to Gandalf The one he had in the hobbit movies (most of them) was fun but it was only used to light up dark halls and that’s it really (except magic of course) And the one he had for his fight with the balrog while looking awesome also was lost quite quickly and the replica version the crystal can fall out of the front, Finally the one for Gandalf the white always felt like it needs to be on a wall so I might look into that in the future but this one’s my fav for the sheer extra details in it like radagasts symbol and the pipe I think I might get both this one and the noble collection one The United cutlery one (this one) to hang on a wall and admire and the noble collection one (as it’s more plastic and has a light up feature) actually take around and travel a bit with I’d love to see the look on peoples faces 🤣🤣🤣🤣

There are two versions originally made by United Cutlery a heavy solid steel pole with an actual crystal sphere at the tip. Then Weta came up with their version which was universally hated because of its overall plastic construction, even the sphere was plastic and to make it worse it was 3-4 times the price of the UC version. Both sold out more than 15 years ago so its extremely rare to find them even on the second hand market.
I've actually got one you can see a bit in the background. It was also from a yard sale and is chipped a bit, but considering the price I paid, it was totally worth it.
I can't stand smoking bans. What is the point of a "pipe" that isn't functional?! I actually have my own, FUNCTIONAL, Gandalf wood pipe. But I doubt they'll let me buy the staff without the pipe at a discounted price...

If you're ever in London you can go and visit the original movie prop of Gandalf's staff. It' behind the bar in a pub called The Grapes.

Wow. And here I am picking up random sticks when I go out on a walk, pretending I’m Gandalf when Nerd has an actual staff. Very cool!!!
That ending with the PIpe was dope.
Awesome new addition to the studio, which is looking very nice! Love the ending
I like how the pipe fits in with the curvature of the staff, was this also in the movies because I had absolutely no idea 🙆🏻♂️
Yes it was! 😁 really cool!
It was indeed! If you go watch scenes like Gandalf at Isengard, you can totally see the pipe in multiple shots.
A million times I have seen the movies but never did I even think to pay attention to that. From now on I will!
@@ahandsomefridge same!
I looked up the staff because I learned that's where he kept the pipe, I was like, WHAAAAT?!?
Funny this was in my recommendations because i just bought Orcrist the other day and i cant wait for it to get here
Gandalf had two staffs. Before the fight with the balrog and after Illuvatar resurrected him. This staff is from before his fight with the balrog.
I wish the pipe was usable, always been a big fan of churchwarden pipes. But it all looks so cool, regardless!
"I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, Flame of Udun!"

Great unboxing and review.
Another great review man! Would love to get a tour video of your collection!
Thanks for mentioning it was UC. I've been considering buying that one for some time and this helped convince me.
Wow nice staff!! Best part of the video is Matt cleaning the pipe 🤣
You continue to live my dream, Matt. Always wanted to have all 4 Gandalf staves! You’ve got just one left - go for it!!! 😁
You should totally go on a mountain hike with the hat and staff.
or simply walk into Mordor with it
