Large Myford fixed steady - Part 1 (machining iron castings)

  • I start to machine the two castings which I had made in Pakistan a few weeks ago (see previous video). These will form the body of a larger than standard fixed steady for my Myford lathe. The castings are cleaned up and surfaces skimmed before marking out on a surface plate for machining. The location features with the bed are completed and the centre of the hinge determined. This construction project is to be followed up.
The original reason for making this steady is to accommodate a 2.75in diameter shaft in my Myford Super 7 lathe. This bar needs to be reduced in diameter to become part of the missing over arm support for my Adcock & Shipley milling machine.

Hello Clive. Fantastic job of the castings. Nice to see them being machined now you are in the UK. You do get about! Excellent work, I will probably watch several times to pick up on all the nuances. I am going to be making a video soon on the Steinmetz connection. I will make reference to your channel in it and include a link, if you have no objection. You are rapidly becoming my "Workshop friend"!

Nice. Machining Pakistani castings in th UK gives it a bit more international character :)
And I'm glad to see the milling machine is working very well.

Thanks, Rustinox! Yes, there is some satisfaction in that. So far no hard spots in the castings. Suspect I could be taking deeper cuts on the mill.

Great video I'm excited to see the future episodes. Perhaps Myford take notice of your video and makes a bigger version of there steady rest.

Thanks for your feedback! I think my forthcoming project which requires the larger fixed steady will be pushing the lathe to its limits. Not sure how much demand there would be for this larger size. I suppose I could make drawings available to anyone who wants to make it.
