    , this kind of unit is bad for SQ. Check Red power head units with pure optical signal

    I have 2 FYT-based Spreadtrum uis7862(s) units with optical and coaxial outputs. The units I have are Joying but several other companies use Spreadtrum uis7862(s) units. Stinger, TEYES, ATOTO. The stinger units are the best I think. I use the optical out into a MINI DSP C-DSP 8x12 v2. I like the Mini DSP because of the Finite Impulse Response Filters. If Alpine put this unit out it would be $3000

    I have a much older android head unit I bought specifically as it has a volume controlled SPDIF output. I feed that to a MiniDSP Cx12. It sounds amazing! Well: I'm sure the jitter is poor and it's not a bit perfect stream (obviously as it's volume controled!), but it sounds great. I could leave the volume at 100% and use the DSP volume control if I was worried about bit-banging to reduce volume; but honestly in the car the convenience of using the steering controls for volume etc is worh more.

    The idea is very good, I really do like it. However I find it absolutely time wasting to spend any time on this particular modell, as it has literally no sq capacities. The vendor should send you their top of the line model for testing, that has a potential to be at least half decent.

    if you are willing to compromise on feaures and integration ,the best sound quality will be to hook up the phone directly to A dac that has optical output . like SMSL PO100

    You mentioned RCA outputs and Optical output. I already know about the RCA outputs because they're very popular, but it's very rare that anyone mentions the "Optical" output. What are the advantages of using the Optical output? Is the Optical output better than the RCA output?

    • @RAW-CAt
      @RAW-CAt  5 місяців тому

      Yes. Optical (or coax) output is a digital form of the signal. It's the same as your files are stored or you are streaming. Signal via RCAs goes through a DAC (digital to analogue converter) and the quality of the signal is being degraded every time such a conversion happens. And it depends on the quality of the DAC. Better quality DAC - higher price. Digital signal is the purest form of the source. The best way is to have digital signal going directly to your DSP. If you choose RCAs over optical, you are converting your digital signal to analogue in the head unit. Then analog signal is being converted to digital in the DSP, it is being processed and converted back to analogue again to feed into the amplifiers. That is two unnecessary conversions that are degrading the sound.

      Thank you for replying. I didn't know about the optical connection being better. In fact, I'm currently researching Audison's “Full DA” systems, and it seems that in these systems the entire audio path is optical.

    They should have sent you the S8 ultra. I have one and I like it, although its a bit glitchy. The bluetooth streaming from phone wasnt great, but it takes a SIM card and wifi, which sounds great with optical to my ears. I compared it to different dacs and devices that I own and it sounded great. Its basically a tablet with internet, but you still have car stereo functions like reverse camera.
    I use a mini dsp, so I never played with the janky sound processing. Although it seemed better/more control then most car stereos.
    I had a Kenwood 1037s prior, which was great, but it stopped working after 7months, bricked and never turned back on. So I gave the s8 ultra a shot because of the optical and price.

    The ONLY 2 REASONS i went with atoto S8 pro was optical output, and i can watch Netflix on my HU... i dont have to deal with shitty rca, especially on the atoto. That's only 1v at best, so with the optical, i dont set gains or adjust input eq on my helix.dsp, and best of all, ONLY 1 WIRE from my hu to dsp

    I had been an Alpine head unit guy since the 80's but I gave up on them when I switched to Bluetooth streaming 7 years ago. At that point all but the most expensive hu's from all the brands were several generations of bluetooth standard behind flagship phones. My Pixel 8 Pro on a Proclip phone mount and my FiiO BTR5 provide better Sq into my system than most aftermarket or stock hu's.

    regarding the older android os, i think its the same since its a full android unit. if you pay close attention to other marketed android carplay headunit, they are very limited access system and only give you access to download certain apps that are geared around those particular units, whereas the one in your hand is as you said a glorified tablet and thats alot more than what others offer

      I went back and forth between Joying and Atoto. I forget what made me go with Atoto. It may have been the dvr camera. Its not the best but it sounds good and it does more then any other brand name headunits. Ive tried using a galaxy S7 tab, but there was too many obstacles to get it to perform like a headunit. Then I bought a Kenwoood 1037s which died after 7months. Had the Atoto S8 Ultra for about a year now, and am moderately happy with it.

      I've had a joying and was very average. Went back to single din pioneer as it sounded way much cleaner. My friend however has a mekede. Never heard of the make but it's the vastly superior to my joying I had. I'm actually thinking on taking plunge on one for my partner's car. But very few reviews. Details like pre out and sample rate always missing on these retailers sites.

    You could plug in those usb ports a cheap usb soundcard just to see If you get digital sound which bypasses the headunit's
    (bad) DAC. I have a chinese noname android headunit connected to a usb to optical soundcard, feeding my mosconi DSP 😃

      I'm curious about that. Can you link to such USB soundcard? I've got a 5-year old xtrons unit, and I don't feel like spending the money on a new "real" brand unit because I like having Spotify, Maps, reverse cam and such on a standalone system to not be dependent on my phone. If I could do like you, it would be very cool

      Also, I'm currently in the process of rebuilding my entire system with Gladen components, and the future smells like a nice mosconi DSP. Never tried DSP before. Which mosconi you got?

    • @kostas133kostas
      @kostas133kostas 5 місяців тому +1

      First, make sure your headunit supports sound output to usb by connecting any set of earphones in any cheap usb audio card to see if you get any sound. I m currently using a behringer uca-222. Any usb sound card with optical output that doesn't require installing drivers in a pc should do for feeding your dsp. Keep in mind that you ll be getting digital output through the card but no analog output like fm radio. For analog output I m using headunit's rca to dsp in another preset but I rarely listen to radio. Volume control is done through drc controller. My dsp is mosconi 6to8 v8 which is a pain in the @ss to tune as it doesn't support the eq import function from REW. Make sure you get mosconi's newer models that support the above feature. Or take a helix one for peace of mind
