This is not as extreme an example as Magnus or Warriors of Plasm, but I really feel Jim Shooter took How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way and showed it to his artists with a big note saying "Do NOT do ANY of this!"

I think he would have been fine with interesting art, but he prioritized fundamentals. And if a guy had rock solid fundamentals plus style, he was going to be way too good to be able to afford. So he just brought over all the house style guys and figured it would be good enough if the story was good. That's the impression I get, anyway.

I didn’t know Shooter tried to buy Marvel

@@erdio21 Yeah, he got a group together, and appraently they cam very close. Given that this would have been in the late 80s/ early 90s, you have to wonder if he would have done a better job shepherding it than the acrual owenrs did.

@ wasn’t Marvel in poor financial shape at the time?
I’m curious how he would have directed it if he had full control.

Not in the late 80s/ early 90s, that was when they were booming. It was the mid-90s. when they'd gotten out of the direct market and they tried to have their own in-house distributor that messed everything up for them. I have to think Shooter wouldn't have done those specific things, though he very easily could have messed things up in other ways.

    Brilliant video 👍
I love this book. I do think you exaggerated how difficult UNITY was to understand. It wasn't. You get a lot of details during the crossover. It was quite reader friendly if you read the whole crossover. Even if you didn't own the early issues of SOLAR.

Could be, I didn't read the whole crossover, but just looking though Unity #0 and realizing how much I'd have to reference back to it seemed daunting. I think as a reader it's probably fine, but when reviewing I like to cover as many of the plot points as I can; so like Solar #0 kind of is necessary to get Erica Pierce to turn into Mothergod, from there you can kind of go into Unity (although there's still backstory to explain, so I'd still have to read those issues, theoretically). I can take another look to see if I can skip ahead, but I don't want to be constantly referring back to things I haven't covered on the channel.

I don’t think you exaggerated it. I read it back in the day and read all the solar issues beforehand and all the valiant titles and it was still to understand the threat and why it took months (in Unity time). But it ended interestingly enough and liked how Kris’s baby fit into the future.

I tried, I mean REALLY tried, to get into Valiant back in the day since it wasn't Marvel or DC and I wanted to support other comics. But man is this a great example of the "huh" energy they gave off.

Yup. Story's not bad, but it's not mindblowing, and it would need to be with this kind of art.

Great vid! Looks like some good foundations in the art, but as you said, the finish is lacking. It almost has that retro feel that I loved with the Magnus series, but it's not quite there for me.

Yeah, it's not great. Although it was pretty successful, so I dunno, maybe it didn't matter.

As a long time Valiant collector I appreciate this video. Back in the day these books were the new collector hotness. X-0 was just such a great concept.

It is truly great, and I mean... there seems to be multiple tries at rebooting it since, so I guess we different variations on a cool concept? That's maybe okay.

The Valiant titles were uneven. The first 8 issues of Magnus were great. X-O had great art. It started to slide downwards quickly when Shooter was fired and then Deathmate happened and bye-bye.

Solar also looked very good, and from what I understand Archer & Armstrong got better after BWS took over writing duties. But yeah, once Shooter got ousted Valiant was only able to limp along for anothercouple of years before they went under.
