  • Drawing from his recent book, Unfriendly to Liberty: Loyalist Networks and the Coming of the American Revolution in New York City, historian Christopher Minty, Ph.D., explores the origins of loyalism in New York City between 1766 and 1776, and adds to our understanding of the coming of the American Revolution. Focusing on political culture, organization, and patterns of allegiance, Dr. Minty demonstrates how the contending allegiances of loyalists and patriots were all but locked in place by the outset of war in 1775, and that the political alignments formed during the imperial crisis of the 1760s and 1770s provided a critical platform that made New York City a center of loyalism throughout the American Revolution.
    About the Speaker
Christopher F. Minty is an editor at the Center for Digital Editing at the University of Virginia, where he contributes to the Papers of George Washington and the Naval documents of the American Revolution, among other projects. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Stirling, and his research has been supported by Harvard University, the Huntington Library, the New-York Historical Society and the New York State Archives.

This information was actually very helpful to me. I'm graduating in December with two bachelor degrees as well as a certificate in museum studies. Right now im writing my senior research paper which is focusing on the viewpoints of the loyalists.

In my studies I always focused on the Patriots. I can't wait to read your book; the climate of the times was much more complicated than I ever imagined. Thank you so much I really enjoyed your presentation.

It was indeed much more complicated (more nuanced, you might say) than many modern people believe.
For example, I recall an article a long time ago which discussed how some *religiously-minded* officials in the American colonies supported independence from the British crown but felt constrained by the oaths they had sworn on the bible when taking office. Those oaths were of fidelity to the Crown. So even though they supported American independence they saw that taking action against the Crown would violate their scared oaths.

I believe it should be called The War for American Independence Institute.
Reason being, the Patriots didn't try to overthrow the government in London,England. Enough Said...

Interesting that this narrative completely ignores Charleston.

What the other poster said, this is about NYC. I'm from Norfolk, it doesn't mention it either!
