There is a moment in the choreography where the girls cover their eyes with their hands and then with a grand gesture, open them, as if gladly welcoming a brand new day. The first time I saw that, I had a positive emotional reaction to it. For choreography to invoke an emotional response, it's special. I don't know squat about dancing but I do know that the intent of art is to invoke thought or emotion... and if dance is evoking emotion, it is art. Perhaps the most difficult artform to achieve that result, especially when the dancers do not have the advantage of facial expression to aid them (being basically silhouettes) . Therefore any dance that actually achieves that goal.... is special.

Nice professional insights to the dancing👊🏽⚡️I have noticed that often with Babymetal the dancing seems to be as much a reflection of the lyrics as it of the music. In this song the lyrics are basically saying, “….chill out. If today wasn’t so good there’s always tomorrow..”. It seems to me the flowing dance moves match that sentiment well..🦊🤘🏾

I guess I always look at BM lyrics in a darker way, but I think this song hints to the hikikomori phenomenon, people struggling to force themselves out in the world again ... step by step.
Though I always remember when SU was being interviewed about Gimme Chocolate, when asked if it was about eating disorders, she kindly replied: "No, it's about girls loving chocolate." 😅

I don't think Babymetal's choreography have any reason or intention to be just like the others or follow norms or rules, just like everything else in babymetal. There's not one thing they do ''just like everyone else'' that I can think of, depending on the eyes seeing it it can be for their detriment or fortune, I for one (as a person who knows nothing about choreo in comparison to you) fell completely in love with this song 50% because of the choreo, i dont know shit about the technicality of it, I just love it.
I do see your points tho and respect them, and I'll raise you a different point of view: what if the lack of structure is on purpose for people like you who have the eyes for it get double the enthusiasm when the structure finally appears and you get back in you comfort zone, Isn't that what babymetal is all about? Mixing stuff that normally isn't mixed or some people maybe even think shouldn't be mixed and doing it in a way that makes you appreciate both parts and get a new perspective?

Watching your BM-reactions made me respect and enjoy choreography a lot more. I can't say that I didn't respect it before, I even have own favorite dancing moments, but it usually was like a visual noise to me and now watching you I feel a bit guilty and happy at the same time. Happy, because you showing me another dimension in my favorite music that I almost didn't notice before. Thank you! And don't be shy to tell that you don't like something, your reactions is not an ordinary reactions of a random person, you're a professional and your opinion means something and it's much deeper than just "ah, not my cup of tea". Peace!

Good reaction - and as you know and as confirmed in the comments below, nobody has a problem with something not clicking with you when you can explain why that is.
I am no dancer or choreographer, but all those things you were describing about street are the things that get on my nerves when watching dance acts - it is all about the beat and rarely seems to bear any real relation to the song ... to my eyes at least.
Mikiko's choreo for BABYMETAL works so much better for me as an ignorant observer who used to see choreographed dance as an unnecessary distraction - it flows with the song and the lyrics and enhances the song and the performance. That is just how I see it of course, I may be the only person who sees it that way for all I know - but I like what I like.

    • @SayuriAsahina
      @SayuriAsahina Рік тому +5

I have to say, I sort of feel the same way about street dancing. I don't dislike it in the right context, but for me personally, the softer, less structured, more flowing dance styles suit Babymetal - and their music/presentation - far better. What it looks like to me is that they take the softer flow of ballet and put a more modern spin on it, rather than making any attempt at technical dancing. They seem to lean more strongly toward emotive and expressive dance, and that really works for me in this song. I would like to see you react to Babymetal songs along with the lyrics, just to see how well the dances illustrate the lyrics - which seems to be the point sometimes rather than to dance to the music itself. Also, I like the unrestrained grins that Moa (and often Momoka) has when she's dancing. When it looks like she's having fun with what she's doing, I'm having fun, too.

I actually enjoyed the dance, but yeah, I kinda get what you mean. For me, though, the dance with just their silhouettes made me like this dance.
When I first heard this song, I was questioning on how will they choreograph this song. But, I still enjoyed it when it was first performed, lol.
It was interesting though, because for you as a professional dancer, see the dance as "all over the place". While for me, I didn't see that, I was so confused, but I enjoyed it.
    Thank you for this reaction😊.

As the dancing by BabyMetal usely is interpretation of the song , and their singing about. not worrying about tomorrow. it's another day .in the begaining the courography is them just dancing chilling out and not worrying . Then as the problems disappear the courography by the end( by how much you liked the last bit) the courography is like life back to normal and structured.. oh no i have just being thinking again sorry it happens sometimes 🤣❤️

I appreciate your honest comments and how you communicate your perspective. Just as you've gotten to know Babymetal I've gotten to know where you're coming from over the course of these reactions. One aspect of their choreography you might consider is how years have passed since they began, although we as viewers may experience that completely compressed watching videos immediately taken from any year. What if anything should change over time as the members of Babymetal grow up from children into young women? Also, this is a bit harder to discern because their catalog is so varied, but what if anything has changed correspondingly in the music they are performing? Perhaps that's best approached on a song by song basis regardless., Brand New Day is obviously not Gimme Chocolate..

Hi Xiaouiris As you said, the song IS good. You said you wanted more mirroring, I have a song from Babymetal that you might find interesting. I have a feeling it will be one of those songs Su sings that gets you a bit emotional for some reason. I could be wrong, but she sings in keys we rarely if ever hear her sing in. It is probably what I'd call a silent favorite. It is a favorite of most fans that they don't really put out there really. Anyhow the song is From Dusk Till Dawn (Budokan 2021 Live). Hopefully you give it a go because I think you'll like the song and you might enjoy the choreo a bit more too. Who knows!! Only the Fox god knows! lol

When I saw Brand New Day I was excited to see your reaction (however this was not a good version in my opinion - at least not as good as their performance at Budokan where the visuals were so good).
I certainly respect and value your opinion concerning choreography as I know nothing. This is not only one of my favorite BabyMetal songs but it also happens to be one of my favorite choreography numbers. I love the swaying and hand gestures of Moa and the Avenger and structure is not as important to me as how it flows with the music.
If you have a desire take a look at Brand New Day LIVE at Budokan so that you can see the choreography (not that it will change your mind😉).
    Until next time.

    Great reactions!
I would like to hear BxMxC's commentary on Babymetal too.
They say this song is rap. I am a Japanese in my 60's and I felt this song is similar to the way of singing and dancing in the Japanese traditional "浪曲" genre. Maybe only an older person like me would think so, but in a way I feel it is an old Japanese rap song called "浪曲". The dance of this song also has elements of samurai dance. Since "浪曲" is a genre that is not well known outside of Japan, I would like to hear what non-Japanese people feel about it.
I recommend the concert version.ELYSEE MONTMARTRE PARIS - BxMxC

You made me do homework! According to her official credits list on her site, this is Mikiko. This song is a collaboration with Polyphia, who are a progressive rock band, so all that unusually complicated guitar in this song is them. Maybe that threw the choreography off? Or maybe she tried something new and it didn't work.

@@xiaouiris I blame 2020. Not only was it, well, 2020, but Mikiko had just gone through her ridiculous Olympics disaster-bacle around this time (reserved for when something is both a disaster and a debacle).
According to articles in major Japanese newspapers, Mikiko had been hired to work on the Olympics opening and ran into such a buzzsaw of misogyny that she walked, and Perfume cut all business ties with this company, who had produced videos for them in the past, out of protest.

Although I'd never consider myself a dancer, I do dance very occasionally (hip-hop primarily) as a way working out.
You put into words so many things I've felt with babymetal choreographies that I could never understand why.
The idea of "allowance" choreographies really makes sense. I think it also applies to their song BxMxC, and that one is a blast to learn and perform. However, I never felt the same way about Brand New Day.
This song is obviously great, and Su's voice is impeccable, but by the way the movements are executed and structured, I couldn't get into properly learning it. Honestly I was bored by it.
As I already mentioned, I feel like BxMxC choreography follows the same idea, but it's much more well executed and appropriate for the kind of song it is and the energy it requieres.
Maybe I'm wrong, but you should check it out. It could show you an interesting contrast.
I've been a fan of babymetal for like 7 years already, and it's no secret that some choreographies are very hit or miss
