    If you’re looking for a mid-size SUV, you really are spoilt for choice. Nearly every carmaker offers its own take on the formula, with cheap-as-chips and much more premium options. Somewhere in the middle you’ll find the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and Ford Kuga: these are SUVs that are bought in their thousands, often by families. A good family SUV needs to be inexpensive to run, wonderfully practical and stuffed with enough gadgets to make road trip boredom a thing of the past. If you’ve watched our Tucson and Sportage videos then you’ll know that we really rate these Korean SUVs. Can the Ford Kuga keep up? Nicola and Rich put them to the test in a serious SUV shootout!

    This is the UK with our crumbling road network, if you drive a lot of miles, comfort is EVERYTHING! Tucson wins. Sporty driving is a lifestyle illusion, most the time our roads are so busy your just cruising from one pothole to the next. Firm suspension gets very tiresome, very quick

    I’m a Hyundai girl and recently converted my sister from Nissan to Hyundai. We actually both got new Hyundai’s on the same day. She went for the Venue. I traded my 2019 Sunset Orange Kona in for the 2022 Amazon Grey Tucson. I love a car with great safety ratings and a massive warranty. She drives nice too. I’m still figuring out all the bells and whistles.

      I'm thinking of private leasing one. Even if I get the plugin hybrid and it's really cold I can still run it as a standard hybrid to keep the inside air warm. That being said having the option to use the EV battery for heating the air would be really good and I have heard that Toyotas RAV4 plug-in hybrid has that or maybe it's only some of the pure electric cars that have it from Kia, Hyundai and Toyota. In any case have you tried your Tuscon on winter roads and in tight corners and on highways? Does it feel wobbly and too soft in suspension? Do you think it is distracting not having real buttons for controlling the air conditioning and radio?

    Well don’t have any of them. Got a Hyundai Kona 2022 petrol hybrid. Suits my needs. Seldom carry people in the back seats nor need a vast amount of boot space. Get decent MPG if you drive carefully and gently. Same could be said of any car. Has a decent amount of poke if you want to speed along. Just got back from a journey and achieved 138mpg.

    • @Cohiba100
      @Cohiba100 4 місяці тому +2

      @@ikkool Sorry for a late reply which probably is a bit irrelevant to you now. I find it a good car with some glaring problems that for me are enough to not wanting to buy another one. The major one being that it cannot be used in the wintertime without the ICE running since the heating requires it. So whenever it dips below 10 deg C. the engine will start but it will only idle in order to warm up the passenger compartment which means that it actually takes quite some time for any heat to build up since there is no load on the engine because the actual propulsion of he car is still battery operated, so what you get is a car that is powered by a quite small 91 HP electrical engine and heated by a 180 HP ICE. And in order to get real heat quickly you have to use it as a normal hybrid which of course also means that the consumption is much higher thus rendering the entire PHEV idea moot.

    If I were going to spend £35k on an SUV right now, I'd be heading for my nearest Kia dealer, followed by a look in at my closest Hyundai one... The South Koreans are absolutely nailing it right now.....both from the design and tech angles. The Ford is looking decidedly dated these days. Having owned a 2013 Focus Ecoboost for 4 years, I'd have reservations regarding build quality too. The door seals on my Focus were falling off at 35k miles, and the squeaky plastics inside and Flit Gun paint work outside, didn't impress me much either.. Ford appear to have lost any vision they may have once had. Everything in their car range now revolves around the Focus, being either higher, longer, shorter, or having a more butch look than a basic Focus......

    I'm wondering how well the plugin hybrids perform in the winter. First I thought I want a plugin hybrid that can heat the air only in ev mode but now I don't know if there is one out there that can do that and I also think it's OK running the engine a little. After all in worst case it's acting like a hybrid in those situations not pure ev driving. People say they get used to the screen controls but I'm not sure I will. Just feeling where they are with my hand while I'm driving makes me keep my eyes on the road all the time. Something that seems impossible with a touch screen. Otherwise I like the look and standard included tech of the Tuscon. Aren't there buttons on the steering wheel as well to control the air conditioning and radio/music in the Tuscon?

    Its crazy how the different specs available, are also very different in other countries, with the Sportage, here in Australia, our sportage has the digital instrument cluster, on all trim levels, we got only the long wheel base version, and we don't yet have the Hybrid option, but they are considering it here. Our Sportage also benefits from an Australian suspension tune, which the Tuscon doesn't get making the ride, just that bit mote comfortable. I have a feeling, Kia sportage will be a strong contender, if not winner, for our next wheels car of the year award.

    The Kia and Hyundai are built on the *same platform* with nearly *identical head and legroom* . The Kia has a panoramic roof in this model, that lowers headroom. They also have the same powertrains available. Interior choices and exterior design are the only big difference in the two. Kia's are usual more firm while Hyundai has the softer suspension tuning.

      That's the difference. Both Kia and Hyundai have been lighting quick to respond to market demands, producing the cars people *want* to buy. Not all car makers are so forward looking, and often just trade on their name and past reputation. Kia were the first car maker to introduce a 7 year warranty. Few others have dared to follow..... Just look at the success both Kia and Hyundai have enjoyed in the EV field, just in the last 5 years alone.....and they're just getting started.

    Throwing one suitcase into the boot shows nothing. Put 3 medium suitcases in with hand luggage, because that is the situation you will find yourself in with a family SUV. I had a look at the Sportage over the weekend, and when I opened the boot, I was very disappointed with the load space. It seems the boot capacity includes the under floor storage, which is useless for suitcases! My BMW 3 Series Touring has a 500 litre boot that has more useable space than the 'bigger' 587 litre Sportage. Seems most car reviews these days are as much about entertainment than actually reviewing the cars.

Also for me I prefer the looks of the Hyundai and need as big of a boot as I can get for dog and baby stuff. There's really very little to choose between the Hyundai and Kia. If you want a comfort-focused car with the biggest possible boot get the Tucson, but if you can step up to the more expensive trims then the Sportage is a winner! We love them both.

      I used to think this way, but I just bought my first SUV, a Kia Sportage GT-line. It's built seemingly as nice as the E class merc I traded, especially the interior. It drives as comfortably, albeit differently because coupe vs SUV is different, but not as much as you'd think. Also, I bought a rowing machine a few days after I received my Sportage, and for the first time ever was able to chuck it in the back and take it home immediately vs my normal wait for a delivery. And now, best of all, I can actually see over the surrounding vehicles in traffic as opposed to getting a blocked view everywhere when sitting in my previous coupe. If you can't beat 'em then join 'em, and the Kia is a stylish way to do it imo.

    • @bigmacntings7451

      opposite end of the spectrum here!!.I'm very much getting a liking for SUV's because you have some seriously flexible bootspace. The dimensions are much easier to deal with a full load of equipment. In my case it's flight cases for expo's and demonstrations but could just as easily be for camping/sports kit or baby stuff and/or wheelchairs.
      Some of the smaller ev's just can't swallow a load.

    I’m buying one of these early next year, so this test is helpful. The Ford fails by the fact of it being the ‘chav’ theft car. Fords are so easy to, and are the most stolen. Then the Tuscon is being updated early 24 or sooner, it probably is the winner for me.
