Fantastic playing, adorned with delicious clinkers, but who cares, there's so much feeling and lilting movement.

Another fabulous pianist Earl Wild said the problem with Godowsky's music is it is so very convoluted and difficult that it is, more than with other composers, hard to be at ease when playing it. A pianist feels too constricted by the demands. I have never felt that this is one of the composer's best arrangements, as it is just too clunky.

How sad to listen to this artistry and have that be your takeaway.

Dazzling and stunning and pointless and boring. I find this the least musically compelling Godowsky transcription. The Tausig transcription really enhances the music, and is infinitely more varied and imaginative in its shifting keyboard textures--I know saying this will be viewed as heresy in some quarters. Godowsky is just gilding the lily here. And there's nothing wrong with the original either. Just listen to the Friedman recording, or the Schnabel. No criticism of the stellar Mr. Bolet intended, except perhaps that he is leisurely to a fault sometimes.

Gilded his own lilly on the back, I'd say.

The Friedman recording is fabulous. Friedman also had the Tausig version of it in his rep.
