  • Every time you visit a web page or send an email, data is being sent and received through an intricate cable system that stretches around the globe. Since the 1850s, we've been laying cables across oceans to become better connected. Today, there are hundreds of thousands of miles of fiber optic cables constantly transmitting data between nations.

    What I think is the most impressive: is that the cables only transmit series of 1s and 0s, simultaneously, in infrared, at light speeds.

    • @elvenkind6072
      @elvenkind6072 2 роки тому +2

      Excuse me, but why in infrared? Isn't "light on" and "light off" (1 and 0) the same no matter what the light is? Or is infrared faster? Cheaper?

    • @tom_the_kristo
      @tom_the_kristo 2 роки тому

      Maybe because of a longer wavelength?

    • @rickyfatty363
      @rickyfatty363 10 місяців тому

      @@elvenkind6072 infrared has a longer wavelength meaning it requires less energy compared to visible light. Im taking a guess here but they dont use radio waves because radio waves pass through a lot of things and they need the light to reflect off the plaxtic/glass in the fiber optics.

    What happens if some of these cables are cut?

      Yaaa, same question.

    • @DangerWrap
      @DangerWrap 2 роки тому +1

      @@himanshuujjwal It will affect the response time. For example if you're in India and want to access content in the US West, normally it will route from India > Singapore > Hong Kong then the US. If the cable in the pacific ocean breaks, it would changes the route to Europe > US east > US West. Data transmission will take the longer way and slower.
      TL;DR The data routing will go to another way which is slower.
