Bhupati is the owner of the Newspaper, who is assited by his brother-in-law Umapati. Bhupati is not able to provide sufficient time to his wife Charulata. Therefore he calls upon Manda, the wife of his brother-in-law Umapati and asks his brother Amal to teech his wife Charulata.
Amal and Charulata are of same age and their literary consigne of the same lable. Amal gets the articles written by Charulata published in the magazines. While Charulata is acclaimed, Amal’s articles are critisized. By going through these publications, Charulata becomes serious, which is wrongly taken by Amal as her false pride. This makes Amal jealous of Charulata and he starts passing of his time with Manda. Charulata does not like this attitude of Amal and she asks Bhupati to send off Manda as early as possible and get Amal married to someone. Amal gets angerd by this behavier of Charulata. He gets married and goes abroad for higher studies.
Charulata does not get any commumication from Amal and this makes her sick. Bhupati tries to wared off this worry of Charulata for Amal, but does not succeed. He gets doubtful of Charulata regarding her affection towards Amal.
In the mean time, Umapati does some mischief in the financial and other management of the newspaper which causes loss to Bhupati and ultimately he has to close down the newspaper publication.
Soon after he gets a job proposal from a Mysore based newspaper and he gets ready to take up the assignment there. Charulata wants to accompany him, but Bhupati refuses to do so. Charulata feels embrassed. Bhupati feels it and asks Charulata to go with him, but Charulata now becomes adment and says that “She has an independent personality and is not depandent on decission of a male person.”
