Kärnäkoski fortress, Savitaipale

The Kärnäkoski fortress is a solid ancient relic, the digging, covering and damaging of which is prohibited by the Antiquities Act (finlex.fi). In addition, making fire is prohibited. Pets must be kept on a leash in the area.
Kärnäkoski fortress is a bastion fortress located in Savitaipale's Kärnäkoski, which was built by the Russians between 1791 and 1793 for the defense of St. Petersburg as part of the fortification system of Southeastern Finland. However, the fortress lost its military significance already in 1809, when the border between Sweden and Russia moved far from Kärnäkoski after the Finnish war.
The Kärnäkoski fortress was part of a wider fortification system in Southeastern Finland protecting the Russian capital St. Petersburg. As a result of Gustavus III's war (1788-1790) and, especially for the Swedes, the Battle of Porrassalmi and the Second Naval Battle of the Straits of Sweden, Russian military circles and Empress Catherine II became interested in strengthening the defense of the empire's northwestern border. An extensive fortification project was launched in southeastern Finland, which was led by the famous Russian general Aleksandr Suvorov.
Defense zones consisting of several nested fortress chains were built to defend the capital. The Kärnäkoski fortress was part of the outermost chain of fortifications in the system, right on the surface of the kingdom's border. Its mission was both to protect the northern end of the isthmus between Saimaa and the Gulf of Finland from a possible land attack and to provide security for the newly established Russian Saimaa fleet.

Tiedätkö miksi tuo linnoitus on nyt suljettu? Kaikilla sisäänkäynneillä on siis puomit. En päässyt videoiman juuri muuta kun auton murjoma kulman. Toki käytiin myllyllä, lotjilla ja vuorilinnalla.

Suljettu oli eikä ainakaan helposti löytynyt syytä. Ps. Tänään kuume päissään törmäsin kanavaan ja kattelin tarjonnan läpi. Aika monta samaa paikkaa ollaan koluttu. 😉
