I have the same telescope and I have a problem with the shakiness when using the focuser. I will have to try out your tip of putting some weight into the bottom tray.
Thanks for the video review. I'm finishing up another semester of astronomy in college and want to do some exploring on my own. This will be my first telescope and there are an overwhelming number of choices. Your video makes it clear you researched this pretty well since you referred to some of the same concerns I've been reading. Now that you've had it a while, would you buy it again if you were in the same situation (first telescope, limited funds, etc.)?
I'm looking to buy this, does the hinge for moving up and down stay still? The last telescope I bought constantly drooped when I was looking at something, is this a problem with this one?
I'm fascinated by the hobby and have finally narrowed down my telescope search to the Orion StarBlast 4.5 or the 6. (The 6 has bigger aperture, but I'd like the dobsonian tabletop mount.) Have you, since making this video, had a good experience overall with this scope? I'd love to hear your thoughts and whether they've changed since having it for a few years. P.S. Are you Texan? You sound like my family and it's great. Haha ;)
Kate B Hi, thanks for your comments.. I'm actually born and raised in Alabama. Not much different than Texas.. A couple of the things I've come to learn from my experience with my scope and others I've had the opportunity to mess around with is first of all unless you are prepared to spend really big money and get a really huge telescope you would probably be better off just keeping your money because you probably won't see much difference between the 4.5 and the 6. I actually was invited to an observatory at a local community college where they had just installed a really nice 12" Newtonian scope on an electronic mount and I was just amazed at how little difference there was between this $1,500 telescope and mine!! Just my opinion, others may differ. The second thing I would really stress is in a scope this small I would definitely go with the tabletop mount.. I cant stress this point enough! Oh how I wish I had went with the simple and convenient tabletop.. Reason being is I cannot just up and run with this mount, and unless you are gonna be tracking deep space objects (which this scope can't really do) you don't need an equatorial mount. You can simply just manually use the tabletop. Once again my opinion and others may differ.. I have actually called Orion trying to purchase just the tabletop mount and they will not sell them separately. I've also spent periods of time searching ebay trying to find one at a reasonable price, like a broken scope but good mount.. Yeah, I'm serious about the tabletop mount.. Lol... But overall I'm happy with what I can see with the 4.5.. I bought some extra lenses and filters and you can make it work for you. See lots of good stuff. I've even seen Andromeda on a clear bitter cold night with this scope from here in Alabama.. Hope this helps.... :)
