    I recently joined a garden group and in the exchange of good gardening tips they said there are 3 plants that I should never plant in my home garden; Bamboo, Ivy, and Mint.

      @HouseFairyDIY  Рік тому +1

      I would agree. Mint is so prolific. It is, however, easy to remove. Ivy seems to keep creeping back and isn't as easy to remove. Bamboo is a nightmare.

      I’ve purchased a house with bamboo and ivy. I brought my mint in my pot raised above ground.
      I’m trying to eradicate both the bamboo and ivy. It’s a mess.

    Currently removing bamboo from daughters garden, it was in a raised bed so I’m digging underneath the bamboo because the soil is quite loose.

    Great video, I currently have the exact same issue. Think I'll have to get a wrecking bar to try and lever the roots out the ground.

      Yes, a wrecking bar would certainly have helped me. I only discovered them recently thanks to my builder lending me one. I used it to remove several stumps and found it made all the difference.

    Clumping bamboo is now starting to spread in the uk due to heavy rain fall.

    I’ve just done the same with pretty much the exact same amount, bought a house, discovered it, also lead under the fence to next door.
    Luckily we had a 1.8T mini digger, even that struggled - we had to pick away at it but at a time but managed to dig it out. I was shocked, as you say it literally is like concrete

      I think next time I will use my friend's tool or dynamite. The upside is that I harvested a lot of canes from the plant and am now using them in my garden.

    Kick the baby shoot spouts where you dont want it to grow. Also chop all the bamboo down to the ground or leave about 3 ft tall. Those will die off. More new canes will grow out of the ground again. Let the canes grow again and let it use up it's stored energy reserves in it's roots by growing very tall. When you see just 1 leaf or so, cut all the bamboo down again. It will be severely weakened. It will use up up more energy reserves to desperately grow more bamboo. Let it grow tall again. Every bamboo that gets it's first leaf again, cut them down. By the 2nd or 3rd year, the bamboo roots are dead.
    Growing many new canes uses lots of stored energy and cutting the canes down before it's leaves sprout stops photosynthesis and stops it from recharging it's energy reserves.

    I have someone wanting me to put mulch where the bamboo is located. Is this the best method for it not to come back? It’s about a section of 2ft by 6ft wide.

    • @HouseFairyDIY
      @HouseFairyDIY  2 роки тому +2

      Mulch won't stop it shooting up. You need to block out the sun, so use thick black plastic weighted down with bricks.

      @@HouseFairyDIY I know. I mean after the bamboo is removed. She wants me to place mulch. If I remove it completely from the roots it won’t come back?

    • @HouseFairyDIY
      @HouseFairyDIY  2 роки тому

      No because I don't have one, but if I did I would not have used it because it would have made it blunt: the ground was full of stones.

      There's a concrete wall on two sides so at least the neighbours will be safe. I'll keep on top of the other two sides. It males such a nice green screen for the old grey wall I couldn't resist.

      @@billhopkins4164 please remove and put in a pot. I've tried to remove bamboo alone (older female) and it caused me so much angst, worry and sleepless nights plus a sprained wrist that has not recovered.

      @@billhopkins4164 Concrete will not stop it. We had a concrete pond in our yard and the bamboo has grown through it. I am in the process of removing approximately 200 sq feet of running bamboo. If you have bamboo, it needs to be in a metal pot. Make sure you periodically lift up the pot to make sure the bamboo has not grown out of the holes in the bottom. It is invasive and shouldn't be grown anywhere there are not giant pandas to eat it. If I could get China to loan me a panda I would be very happy.
