I'm actively learning to roll and I had a discussion with a friend about how easy our particular sea kayaks are to roll. This had been in my UA-cam suggestions for a while, I finally gave it a whirl. By the end of it I was surprised he didn't roll a dining room table! Also the 1h10m is super info dense. Incredibly useful, thanks so much for making it available to the world.
So glad you found it useful!
He. Rolls. A. Sit. On. Top.
That is amazing.
This is a really excellent video. Different from other instructionals, Dubside talks less about the mechanics of the roll and more about working with the water and your equipment to make things happen - a kind of zen approach, which really is what it is all about.
best roll video I have ever seen.
Man watching you explain those roll is so nice and understandable. I do appreciate it. You made it much easier to get back in and do it again. I've watched you several times and it does make a difference. Thanks a million. I can't do all the ones you show but I can do enough to save a few swims.
What can I say? The BEST video about rolling. Thanks!
Frankly, as a teacher, you are the first that described in details of those techniques. Very impressed on how you make us learn and understand better. Lots of good examples, Thank you. With practice and the write technique, we should finally succeed on rolling ! 🙂
Excellent, everything you need to know.
My only comment from years ago when I could happily hand roll in the pool, is that in real life capsizes they always failed. You where never neatly set up as you are for a demo roll, and of course disoriented.
I hope to build a Greenland style kayak soon and get back into it. So some tips for real capsizes appreciated. Thoughts, when practicing, get someone at the stern to tip you over. Do it with your eyes shut. Any more?
Great instructional video! You explain all the little nuances that make the various rolls work…that information is missing from almost all videos…thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Exceptional video, incredibly well explained, with fantastic demonstrations and extremely important and useful tips!! Thank you !!👏👏👏
Thank you for passing on this valuable knowledge.
I live in Grays harbor. Love to kayak with you Dubsides. It seems I'm the only avid kayaker in this area. Wouldn't mind starting a class here.
A small tip to all.... about halfway through my own personal rolling session, I was capsized, about to start a sweep and I felt my paddle didn't move. Instinctively I tried again, obligated this time I put all my might. (Wish I didn't and knew better to roll with grace), this wasn't that. I tore my shoulder. I did a wet exit. Found out my g.paddle blade got caught in my towline. Needless to say I reconnected the line to my non dominant side so it'll never happen again. Though it gave me that opportunity to practice to keep the kayak upside down, get into the kayak upside down, get in and seat yourself while hanging,, put my spray skirt on then set myself up and roll my kayak upright. Try it.
Amazing that he makes the water and kayak work for him
At 45:59 Dub's outboard i.e. left hand is not on top of the paddle, but rotated about 90 degrees.
The guy could roll a bass boat
Thank youuuuu
This is very useful .thanks
Glad you liked it!
Interesting stuff
Got a question for you. 47 years ago when I first started kayaking I learned the roll. Wasn't good, but I could do it. I'm 68 now a few weeks from 69. I have a motto roll plastic kayak. 13'6" long. Think I can learn to roll it? I kind of want to do that. Tell me what you think. THANKS!!!
It depends on a lot of things. How flexible are you, leaning forward, and lying back? How well does the kayak fit you? Do you have knee and hip braces that allow you to grip onto the kayak with your knees and hips, or is the cockpit so big that you immediately fall out of it when upside down? Is the cockpit deep and the coaming high so that it impairs your ability to lay onto the back deck? It's better to start out with a low volume sea kayak that is easy to roll. Once you are confident in your rolling ability, transfer what you learned to kayaks that are more difficult to roll. Differences between kayaks in weight , beam, and volume necessitate subtle alterations in technique and timing of all the coordinated movements required to bring the kayak upright. Regular practice is essential!
@@AndrewElizaga thank you for taking the time out to reply to me. I'm in fair shape and have the confidence. I appreciate your encouragement. I'll let you know when I do it. Again thank you.
Amazing, I'm wondering if you have the part II ?
Dubside never made a Part 2 to this video, but he did collaborate with Wayne Horodowich and Maligiaq Padilla to make a two-part instructional video series on Greenland rolling, available on DVD from the University of Sea Kayaking store: useakayak.org/store/
@@AndrewElizaga than you so much!
The Kayak did it...😆
What kayak is this, the black one?
Dubside's black kayak is the folding Feathercraft Wisper
