The astonishing thing about this film is that Adam Driver, who is known for his intensity and emotional brutality, is so soft and tender, not only with his wife, a lovely Golshifteh Farahani, but with everyone else in his life. Nothing fazes him. When I expected him to get aggravated or angry, he instead processed the situation and moved on. He is so patient and generous with his wife. It's a beguiling performance. I don't know who else could've pulled it off.
Adam Driver is the best actor out there right now. So diverse, and you never think it's unnatural. Except for that Annette movie, but I blame Carax' direction for that.
Went to see this last night. Amazing. Absolutely loved it. Mark nailed the review. Especially the whole thing about the pacing. At the beggining I kept waiting for something to happen. But the more that time passed the less I cared about there being no 'big event'. I just got caught up in the characters. Go watch it!
I thought he was going to commit suicide at some point but no. It is a great movie, but maybe not the greatest of the year. I'd have to see it again to judge it...
spaceboy2095 Thought something like that would happen too. To be honest, most of the reviews I've heard say that it's a celebration of the blue collar man, but to me, most evidently due to the melancholic vibe of the soundtrack that's played throughout the film, the movie feels like it's more about the daily monotony of working class people reflected through the lens of a charming man with a charming response to it all. It's not a celebration of blue collar life, but rather a non-biased insight of its ups and downs.
POSSIBLE SPOILER [beware]: The duplicity is the key to understanding Paterson. All the twins throughout the film represent the duplicity within all of us. More specifically, when Paterson experiences that great loss, he eventually discovers that he hasn't really lost anything. It's all about his delightful mind. He thinks he's one twin (the poems in his notebook), but he's the other (the genuine Paterson himself). This theme is reinforced with the wife's dream of being a country singer. She mistakes herself too. She's really a delightful artist. To quote Polonious (Shakespeare's Hamlet), "To thine own self be true!"
I love the analogy of taking life down from 45 to 33. I also love the idea- true or not- that a lot of folk listening will not have the first damn clue what that means. It is a lovely phrase. Mark isn't just brilliantly ranty . That shows here.
It really made my appreciate simple slow life rhythm, not worring about things are not happining in the moment, as it's the oldest way to have a meaningful life, it is the way of all times I think. It is different and beautiful.
There's a great quote from a Belgian poet called Herman De Coninck that says "poetry only comes if you wait without the waiting" and I feel Paterson does a great job at translating that quote to an experience for everyone to enjoy. I got introduced to William Carlos Williams because of this movie and I'm happy to say their anthologies, both white covers with black and red lettering, are hugging each other in my library.
Watched this film recently and it's a real hidden gem. The film is essentially an exploration of the poetic form and utilises certain rhymic elements within the narrative to complement this.
Adam Driver explains it in one of his interviews that it is just a feeling what Jim wanted to create, like when someone wants to buy a car, e.g. a Toyota and suddenly that person starts noticing Toyotas everywhere, just because it was mentioned and now the brain is noticing something with extra attention. Paterson's wife has that dream about having twins and suddenly Paterson notices twins around him in his entire week. That's it. :)

Simply Jim Jarmusch is a genius. Jim dislike Hollywood and Hollywood dislike him. Jim is everything what Hollywood is not and Hollywood is everything what Jim Jarmusch is not. If you don't like to think don't watch his moves otherwise indulge experience of creative brain stimulation feeling as an honest human being in the world of universal deceit. Jim Jarmusch doesn't provide you ready made food he only gives fresh ingredients and expect you to prepare own creative meal. Don't miss to see work of the best film director at the present time.
Brilliant review Mark and doing so without any spoilers. "The film slows you to its rhythm" which is a wonderful capturing of what makes this movie work so well. Thanks
Paterson reminded me of 5 cm per second, an animated movie by Makoto Shinkai, it has that same interior rhythm. Both are an ode to the fragility and the mundane. Thank you for your wonderful review!
This understated gem of a movie totally wowed me. Great review as always from the good doctor. My own review is up on my channel for anyone interested!
I loved this movie but i'm a bit divided about it. The acting is a bit stagy at times, as well as the dialogues with a bit too much of Paterson fun facts in it which gets you out of the superb filming of the everyday life of a unfulfilled bus driver. It is an awesome piece on the way life and art can co-exist in the life of common people. And at tne end of it, this movie makes you love life, human beings and dogs so much.
"It is an awesome piece on the way life and art can co-exist in the life of common people. And at the end of it, this movie makes you love life, human beings and dogs so much." Very well said.
The ordinary nature of the movie may entice one to wanna watch it but it really was an utter bore..this was a movie- it had no message whatsoever- that's why we go watch a "movie"..it was overly-ordinary kinda, a movie depicting a child's perspective of a child-less couples' everyday life..
Not every movie is for everyone. And that's just fine, there's no problem with that. In my opinion, this particular movie is full with several kinds of messages but one has to have the mindset to understand them.
Fair enough. I found it profound. It raised me out a period of deep depression and fundamentally altered my view of the life i live. It spoke to my experience so deeply. I took away the comforting and hopeful message that an ordinary life can, and should be beautiful and poetic in its simplicity.
Paterson - 3/10 Adam Driver plays Paterson, a bus driver who writes poems and takes his dog for a walk every night. That's all there is to it pretty much. It felt like it was building towards something but no. A waste of 2 hours.

Check out his Hungry Hearts too. You'll be surprised. ;)
Keanu would’ve pulled it off too

Наконец он снялся в фильме,где у него отличние отношения с женой!😂Ато он везде очень нервний.

This is so true. I kept thinking 'oh I bet this will happen' but the film was so beautiful, it didn't need any dramatic events to hold my focus.

Fantastic post 👍
"The film slows you to its rhythm." What a perfect description of how this film made me feel. 😍

It's one of those films where nothing much happens and everything happens. Loved it

Paterson, what a lovely bloke.

The most exciting bit was when the bus exploded into a fireball. Just kidding - anyone know what was up with the numerous twins?
Only thing I could come up with is that tose twins were a message to Paterson, that he should make a copy of his book. You know, like a twin.

Everybody loves Adam driver
I didn't think I would be interested in this, but after the clip it was something seriously beautiful about it.
That is one of the best reviews I have ever heard!!
Looking forward to this, love Adam Driver and it was cool to see the two kids from Moonrise Kingdom in the trailer.
Wow, thank you. I saw those two actors in the trailer and my brain hurt so bad. You are a hero today.
The film is a tribute to American poet, William Carlos Williams. Who by the way lived in Patterson. Overall, a sensitive homage to poetry.

Adam bus driver, love this film
Beautiful review of a beautiful movie! Deeply grateful to have discovered it recently❤️
the first 27 seconds xD
Thought I’d hate this film, but I loved it....!
Brilliant review Mark and doing so without any spoilers. "The film slows you to its rhythm" which is a wonderful capturing of what makes this movie work so well. Thanks
Quotidian. I liked the way it just put things next to each other and let the viewer compare and contrast, without forcing anything.
Kermode on top form with this one, absolutely nailed it.
This movie is a cinematic poem.
Adam Driver. Great actor. Jarmush great favorite director

Wonder how this squares with W.C. Williams' famous poem.
and his name is also Paterson.
