As I’ve never been to America, I’ve seen these but don’t really know what they are? I take it they are sweets? But what do they taste like? Are they hard or chewy?

Yes, they're sweets. They are chewy, not much of a flavor... just pure sugar taste. lol. I'm not much for eating it by the handfuls or anything, but I like to use them as edible decoration for other treats like cupcakes or brownies.
