- A great alternative to windvane steering for coastal cruising. A great emergency steering system as backup offshore if vane fails. Give 'er a try and let me know how you did!
Thanks for sharing!. this is the best video ive found about selfsteering, its clear and simple.
Thank you and don't forget to subscribe as I have more videos coming on trimming techniques, sailors knots you need to know, etc. And follow the adventure of the Golden Hind as she heads for Australia next year!
Very clear and simple! Thanks for this tip!
The best explanation video. Simple and straightforward explanations of the process. Thankyou Sir.
Great video with good unstructions. Easy to follow. Thank you. 🙂
Thanx for a very simple show and tell.. Heard folk speak about doing it, now I can try it on my Jaguar 22.. Good sailing
Man, I hope you are doing well. What happened to your videos? I really enjoyed them. Come back!
Thanks , that was a good illustrating video.
I try this on my slay ride up to the Whitsundays and give K9 a rest. thanks you for posting Simon from Australia
Thank you, thank you, thank you !
Your welcome! I hope it helps you to keep you safe with hands off the Tiller to mix a celebratory drink on that beautiful water!
Got my self one Albin Vega in Nederland Las weekend I was testing my a self steering only one elastic from the tiller to a clit , and it's work good around 15 knots of wind , Got to do more tests for different wind speeds ..
Sweet. Sick Loki jacket by the way! They are made right down the road from me actually!
Great video and a better dog 🐕👍
Very nice!! (Hello from NH)
Very fine instruction video. Love Your dog! :-)
Thanks +René Ahlquist ! Duke truely is an amazing animal and great first mate! Fair winds!
Thanks, Skipper. Good demo.
My boat has wheel steering, balances very well, this method worked fine beating 400 miles from Rio de Janeiro to Florianopolis, south of Brasil, when my autopilot broke. The problem is that downwind it is not efficient and there was no way to make a course greater than 120 and I had to resume my trip and turn back home.
You are right, down wind is harder to do. It can be done by centering the main more than typical to the point it backwinds temporarily. of course in sea conditions, this may result in fully backwinding.
Wow that's great, can't wait to try it out this year!
Très bon système merci , pourquoi plus de vidéo ? , j ai aussi un Albin Vega 1753
Bonjour de Holland 🤙
There are a few variations which I will put to video. High wind and speed while steering this way. Thanks for watching!
Nice! Thanks for the instructions. I’ll spend my 5k on something else.
Little Cape Dory
thanks again how would you change this for stronger down wind sailing
genius. very clear thanks.
Thank you for that. Do you like Vega? I am just buying new boat and there are two, HR26 and Albin Vega. What would you buy?
Hey Buddy, loved this video. Im new to the channel, in which lake are you sailing?
Someone help me! I can't wrap my head around this. Why isn't this backwards? I would think the bungee would pull you off the wind, the the sail power would pull you into the wind. The way it's shown in this and everywhere else... It seems that if the wind heads you, the line from the boom would slacken, thus letting the bungee pull you into the wind.
Yeah give 'er a shot out there. Works amazingly well. I actually used this method many times soloing to mexico. I have a great wind vane but, you know, ya get bored out there for so many days at sea! With the Tiller steering, everything is backwards. If $3-6000 is not in the budget for a steering mechanism, this is a great option! Thanks for the comment and fair seas!
heard of a lad that did 3 circumnavigations using this method.
and, I assume when you come about, you switch the gear ...right?
Thanks. Really appreciate the subtle adjustments demo.
But, is this just a light wind steering? Your mainsheet is now basically a single 3/8" (10 mm) line through one block.
Starts @ 3:15
The 15$ system is the one you are showing in this video or another one? I am going to try this as soon as possible
Hi, thanks for watching! Don't forget to subscribe as I have many more. Ideos coming on trim, etc. Have you had a chance to build your system yet?
hove abaout a long trip ,eks cros atlantic ,same direksjen but diferent strengs
Where does the dog poop?
You wouldn't believe how often I get asked that... trainined him on a pad
Easy does it!
I also have a Vega and interested in learning about sheet to tiller. But for me it has a lot to do with the fact that a vane cost as much or more as my boat did. How does this work in stronger winds?
Hello, thank you for the comment. The sheet to tell her steering works very well in higher wind. actually works better. what will cause the sheet to tell her staring to struggle is the sea condition. I built a very simple system which costed me approximately $15 total which can steer the Vega through anything from close hauled to broad reach. it is so easy that I consider it to be a part of my tack
TheIslandlife73 Hi, Island life, im from Van also, i just bought a sailboat and have a dream of sailing. Im wondering if you can give me some points and tips on sailing from vancouver down to san francisco. Is it doable singlehanded? you think "sheet to tiller steering" works well? you mentioned that you built a 15$ selfsteering from close hauled to broad, how was the setup? thanks btw i dont have that much of experience yet
kideldersick Hi, sheet to tiller steering is a very simple method to steer any sailboat. As the wind increases so does your steering capability with the rudder powering up. Singlehanding to San Fran is totally doable. You can go for a straight shot or gunk hole all the way down. This method does have limitations tho as the sea state increases. Gale force sailing is quite the norm along the Washington and Oregon Coast. If you are single handing, I would still recommend a wind vane system suited to your boat. I will post a video soon on the construction of a sheet to tiller system.
@@ALiquidLife lots of fiddling and adjusting with sheet to helm whilst underway particularly in a small yacht 6/7 metres when there is weight shift from the crew . However tension line adjustment helps to reduce this .
Windvane especially servo pendlum so expensive and quite to very difficult to set up especially if your not so mechanically minded so the trial and error with sheet to helm is worth the continual tweaking and its so simple any sailor can work it and adjust it without expensive mechanical spares.
Love the the vega and vegan .
