They skipped the beautiful R-42's, the R-38's, the R40/ R40A Modified, R46 (yet it was mentioned) AND THE Westinghouse R-68's & Kawasaki R-68-A's. Hey s long as they got the 110's. Very good documentary.
4:28 I remember riding this one as a test train back in the 1990s. They had an automated announcement on the train that would explain to you about the technology and the features of the train while you were riding Express between 59th Street Columbus circle and 125th Street in Harlem (For there were no local stops in between and this gave plenty of time to explain).
We're still generations behind the subways cars they have in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tokyo.... NYC was ahead of its time 100 years ago, but through disfuncytional governments, bureaucracy, and corruption, we're still stuck with hot, piss-smelling, satan-like atmosphere in the subway. Which we still don't receive cell phone signals in and are not air conditioned. Not to mention we don't even have glass separators between the platform and subway on a single stop. But more importantly, there's still a shit ton of delays.
NYC subway ARE air conditioned. The problems are that the tunnels were built long before air conditioning on subways was even a pipe dream. The cars dispel inside heat into the stations and tunnels and the hot air has nowhere to escape. Supposedly WiFi is on the way at some point in time. NYC subways run 24/7/365, carrying more passengers in a day or year than any other mass transit system in the US. The newest subway tunnels are, I believe, the IND Fulton Street Line to Euclid Avenue and it dates back to the 1950's.
The subways cars are air conditioned, not the actual stations. Some stations have wi-fi but if you've ever been to Hong Kong they actually blast cell phone signals throughout the tunnels and the stations are air conditioned too. NYC's subways are big especially compared to Hong Kong but we had over 100 years to improve.
People in Asia are dumber and every day has radiation everywhere. The also built their stations closer to the ground. The newest tunnels are the 2nd Avenue Subway. In London, the deep level lines are not air-conditioned, and the stations are not air conditioned meaning radiation everywhere.
You Cannot have platform doors on the stations unless the trains and automated and not manually driven. The NYC Subway is upgrading its signalling to a new system that will have automatic train control and then platform doors will be able to be installed.
Bombardier used to build the number 1 IRT trains in Barre town Vermont but moved production to Plattsburgh NY putting all of its Vermont workers out of work
They are in "long-term storage" in the various yards around the system...once the pandemic is over, they will do a "Farewell Run" with these cars, and then they will slowly disappear...
The show was called "Transit Transit Newsmagazine," before it went off the air in 2014. If you type the title in Google, you will be able to view some prior episodes of the show.

It was high speed for a commuter train that transported thousands of people in a day, to stations that were blocks away. More importantly, this was a few decades ago. That's kinda the point...
it saddens me when i see that the MTA no longer uses american companies now they rely on Alstom from France and Kawasaki from Japan. What happened to the American Spirit
Man Cho But I feel like they sacrificed quality for technology. Instead of wasting the older trains why not upgrade their systems and make them run on the express rather then the local. Also there doesn't seem to be American workers, no in days its more foreign made
JustYourAverageCoffee LovingNewYorker you do realize that is cost more money to constantly upgrade the old to fleet rather than replace them and the run part is painfully unrealistic also name at a least 5 CURRENT TRAIN BUILDERS THAT STILL PUMP OUT TRAINS THAT ARE AMMERICAN so basically you want TRAINS from the 1940s to still be operating right
+TheAviationGuy whodoesAviationstuff There is nothing wrong with the American spirit but what is called economics. The cost of building cars has gotten to the point where it is uneconomic for multiple companies to be able to survive by building the relatively few cars ordered. This has happened to numerous companies in varying industries. It is sad but true. The specifications keep changing mostly to higher safety and high tech which add to the cost. Also the labor to build the cars keeps going up.
Introducing the R110B!!!!! THE NEW TECH TRAINS THAT WILL RUN ON EVERYLINE!!!!!!! Just kidding only on the A and C trains and will live for 40 years!!! just kidding it retired only 2 years after delivery Thanks alot MTA you suck
Trains NYC they weren’t meant for long term use. They only existed to test new technology features. They had to be retired anyways because of braking and engine issues.
When this was made & produced, the R179s were not in their minds. The NTT (New Technology Trains) at the time this video was created were the R142s, R143s & R160s. Sorry...
Thanks for posting. I never saw this before. Good to see Don Harold so well preserved!

Like I previously stated, they only had 25 minutes for this documentary, which is not a lot of time...
And it stops at R160. DUMB!
Suck you R160 and suck you alstom
I wish they brought the R110A and R110B
R179 = R.I.P R42's

Very nicely done. I just wish I had seen the "slants" represented!
Sean Lonergan They didn’t have time to add that in..

Why don’t they talk about the attractive R40 cars that attracted people to get out of their cars and take the subway instead?
They initially put this together for a 30-minute television show...my apologies...
6:50 Anyone noticed the WMATA 6000 series cars

I really miss R110A and R110B
Dòng Ròng yeah I miss them too
R110A = Strong Fire
R110B = Break Problems
Watch him roll now R110B had the fire
Do you have any idea what the R142S is supposed to be? I believe it's a variation of the bombardier R142.
basically they are supplement cars from bombardier, built after the order was completed. All of the R142s' are running on the (4) now. (#1101-1250)
Skipped the R38, R40/M, R42, and the R68/As.
Like I previously stated, they only had 25 minutes for this documentary, which is not a lot of time...
And it ends at the R160. DUMB!
interisting series.
1:18 r44 use to run on the Long Island railroad

Bombardier used to build the number 1 IRT trains in Barre town Vermont but moved production to Plattsburgh NY putting all of its Vermont workers out of work

Yes, because they only had 25 minutes for a 30 minute show...
They also skipped the r68/a and the r40s/42s
I loved the R32 when I was a grownup ;-) ;-) ;-)

Cool
5 Express to Nereid Ave. passing Southern Boulevard
I really hope the MTA put back the light blue r-36's. They were so bright and good looking. Of course it won't happen.
That's not that gonna happen
These Trains Were "High Speed" And " High Tech". HOW FAST IS THAT TRAIN GOIN M8
It was high speed for a commuter train that transported thousands of people in a day, to stations that were blocks away. More importantly, this was a few decades ago. That's kinda the point...
What about Siemens?
Again, they only had so little time to produce the film to begin with. Sorry...
STAND CLEAR OF THE CLOSING DOORS PLEASE

it saddens me when i see that the MTA no longer uses american companies now they rely on Alstom from France and Kawasaki from Japan.
What happened to the American Spirit
+JustYourAverageCoffee LovingNewYorker They make better more advanced trains For god sakes these are companies that build High speed trains
Man Cho But I feel like they sacrificed quality for technology. Instead of wasting the older trains why not upgrade their systems and make them run on the express rather then the local. Also there doesn't seem to be American workers, no in days its more foreign made

Man Cho i never said I wanted trains from the 1940s, though that would be cool

Introducing the R110B!!!!! THE NEW TECH TRAINS THAT WILL RUN ON EVERYLINE!!!!!!! Just kidding only on the A and C trains and will live for 40 years!!! just kidding it retired only 2 years after delivery Thanks alot MTA you suck
Trains NYC they weren’t meant for long term use. They only existed to test new technology features. They had to be retired anyways because of braking and engine issues.
Trains NYC im pretty okay with this, because i still get to enjoy a ride on the R-32s the C train provides and sometimes the As

The R44 looks like the R46
Me Ben Ami Love R42 And R44 Rail Cars
The R-44's had way to many problems that is why they were retired, and scrapped.new cars are good, but I like theothers better.!Prewar.cars.!
martin matsil Real reason was for rotting frames.
they just forgot the r68s
Too much too soon the R142 / A should've been bulit by 2010 smh. And went to the 2,3,5,7 NOT THE 4 AND 6 LINES.
Carlos M. Pizarro Why?
What about R179
When this was made & produced, the R179s were not in their minds. The NTT (New Technology Trains) at the time this video was created were the R142s, R143s & R160s. Sorry...
R160A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
like train
No R143😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩
Are you deaf? Or blind? Or both? If both, how do you know you typed words?
THIS IS NOT ENOUGH TIME THATS WHY
the r-68 changed little from the r-30 its design is like the r-46 but its a more simple design
nikkia730 they didn’t have time for that
this is in the past.although when they were in service some people used Graffiti on the train walls.the present is boring.
Forgot r179 you bums.
Correct me if I am wrong but this documentary takes place in 2006-07 and the R179 didn't come to NYC until 2008-09.
MJofLakeland1 no it came last year
They are horrible they have so many problems
David B The problema have been fixed and more reliable than the turds that are the R42 cars.
