    I absolutely love steam engine trains.... I plan on heading overseas to take a trip on some of the few steam trains still running these days..... These trains were the workhorses of the past that helped bring us into the future!

      there is a steam train running in North Vancouver BC and in the interior of BC called the Royal Hudson and Kettle Valley respectively.

      @@GuiltyOne I suspected they were unknown.
      The Royal Hudson has a unique option, leave Vancouver area on the MV Britannica ship and come back from Squamish on the train, a steam ship and steam train in one trip.

    As a mechanical engineer steam locomotives are one of the greatest inventions of all time. The complexity of them for the time is impressive.

    • @billmorris2613
      @billmorris2613 2 роки тому

      I don’t find them that complex. I am a retired locomotive engineer and have been involved in firing, operating, and maintaining a Mikado 2-8-2 since 2003.

    I'm an American and I can say I think the Mallard is one of if not the most beautiful passenger hauling steam locomotive in the world!. If I'm not mistaken it was also nicknamed the blue goose lol. She's beautiful.

    I’m not very fond of foreign railroading in general. But I’m very happy they have preserved some of their historic equipment like the Flying Scotsman., and have them in museums or operational.

    • @j.l_railphotography
      @j.l_railphotography Рік тому +1

      In the Uk, we have 400+ standard gauge locomotives (excluding industrial locomotives and narrow gauge engines) either running on heritage railways, the mainline or in museums and overhauls. I could be wrong but it's my guess our preservation effort and the extent of it is more evolved than America's. I reckon there might be more heritage railways as a whole (I could be wrong) but it's guaranteed there are more heritage railways per X amount of distance than the USA.

    You lost me when you got to numbers 5 and 4 on the list. From 15 downward, you were talking about STEAM ENGINES, and therefore the aesthetic qualities of the engines - not the train. Cornish Riviera and Scarborough Flyer are the names given to a special train - which could be hauled by the most ugliest engine in the world, but would still be called “Scarborough Flyer” or “Cornish Riviera Express”….

    • @j.l_railphotography

      Yes but generally these services were hauled by elegant express locomotives. And the majority of British locomotives are beautiful anyway.

    Their is a company rebuilding one Pennsylvania RailRoad T1 steam locomotive to beat the speed record and if you look at the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 it is the longest locomotive in the world and the length for 4014 is 132 feet long. The Mallard steam locomotive is only 70 feet in length.

    Aw . . . Missing my favorite, Santa Fe's 484. It's a strictly business poster model for steam locomotives that brings the kid out in grown men I'd replace one of those pretentious attempts at modern art with it. Then you could still put "A1", "Shak" and "Cigarette" all three aboard and it would still look the part highballin' through the yard and the fog at a frightening 100 plus MPH.

      coming from someone that volunteers at a railway where an A4 is sometimes based it's not that bad, better than a lot of other locomotives. And maintenance was easier once the streamlined casing over the wheels was removed after the war (Which made it much less intensive to oil the motion and clean the wheels etc.)

    This video gets my thumbs down as there were several locomotives around the world that were far more handsome than locomotives like the XA Triplex and the Pennsy S1. moreover many trains like the Cornish Riveria Express and the Scarborough Flyer were names of trains, not locomotives. You started with types of locomotives than went to train titles then back to locomotive names. An example is that what many people don't realize is that the Flying Scotsman is that name of a locomotive and train. E.G. Flying Scotsman was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, who also designed Mallard. Flying Scotsman was a Class A3 pacific and had many sister engines such as Papyrus, Royal Lancer and Great Northern. Flying Scotsman was also the title of a train. During the age of steam it was possible for A3 Pacific No.4472 "Flying Scotsman" to haul the Flying Scotsman train. It was also possible for Mallard to haul the Flying Scotsman train, which still operates today, but with more modern rolling stock. The locomotives used on the Cornish Riveria Express were King or Castle Classes of the Great Western Railway. Famous examples were King George V or Pendennis Castle. I'm sorry but I feel that I should give you a thumbs down because you are viewing the world through the eyes of an American. E.G you only looked at the USA, UK and what was quite an ugly train in India. You failed to look at Africa were they are many beautiful locomotives and Australia, which is home to some of the most handsome locomotives in the world. I would urge you to please study your subject thoroughly before proceeding to publish videos like this one.
