I am not a brand snob but we have seen over and over that you get what you pay for. Our experience has been that most Medelis are ok when brand new out of the box - but keys stick and stop working after several months. Also saw problems with power supply and display screens. We no longer accept them in trade so you may only spend $779 for a new one now, but unfortunately within 2-3yrs you may be stuck with a broken completely worthless thing so you have really wasted ALL your money. We advise our budget-challenged customers to avoid the temptation of low end brands like Medeli Williams and Donner and to keep saving and wait for a good deal on a used or older model Yamaha/Korg/Roland that usually are reliable for 10+ years of service. Actually I guess I am a brand snob as I just hate to see people get throw their hard earned money away on junk

Wow Mr. Jeremy See I just received my Medeli AK-X10 Keyboard and I have to say 1st this keyboard is awesome; I am basing it on your review., I am very impressed with the style and sound. The main thing I like is the touch screen. and for the price $799 , it is worth it unlike Yamaha $2200, BTW I still have the Casio CT-X5000 very pleased with it as well, I am a beginner. and want to play the Keyboard. thank you so much for the insight on these Keyboards.I will say it is heavy! but aside from that. I am very pleased,

Don't throw your CT-X away (or sell it) unless you hit the limitations of Medelis Style recording and MIDI Playback and are willing to deal with them or/and wait for further updates. At the Moment, with the FW1.3 there are quite improvements, but still far away from what you can do with the CT-X5000. That's what Jeremy missed in this video, and why there is much confusion about the AKX-10. I've made quite a lot of videos 'bout the AKX-X10 now. Maybe you wan't to check them.

Great review, Jeremy See. Where I live (The Netherlands) the Medeli AKX10 is priced at €689. The Yamaha PSR SX600 is even cheaper, costing €615 only! But I’m actually convinced by your review that the Medeli would be a better option. Only downside are the built in styles that are lacking behind competitors. This is the case for any Medeli keyboard. Luckily it has the function to make your own styles.

I bought the AKX10 at the end of last month - unfortunately my one turned out to have some quality and some bug issues. 2 key notes started making a clunky noise after just 2 days of playing and when I clicked on one of the 3 assignable buttons above the pitch bend joystick the 2nd button would also light up for some reason, I would have to restart the AKX10 to make this issue go away. So it has some bugs. BTW I believe the AKX10 has bluetooth? but I haven't found where in the menu it's listed?
I ordered mine from Music store Germany and they are happy to replace it with another unit under the 30 days return policy. However I am double minded because even though I like this keyboard my first impression was not good as after just 2 days the 2 keys started making a clunky noise which was getting a little annoying when playing.
So I am wondering should I just order a Yamaha SX700 instead of asking them to replace it with another AKX10? Prior to ordering the AKX10 I owned an old Yamaha PSR640 which I bought brand new at the time and the build quality on that was very solid. That PSR 640 keyboard took 5 years of hard playing for a few of the keys to lose the original brand new feel and another 5 years before one key eventually stopped working. So it lasted 10 years of regular use without any major issues.
      Any advice is welcome!

Until March, when Medeli said they will release a major update, the AKX 10 can't have any good review, because the keyboard is a mess and a lie. From Mixing style, edit style, to midi, even sounds.
      I have comment with details.
If You want the AKX10 for sounds only, and You got good samples, it's ok. If You want to play live with styles, make your own styles, without knowing a DAW, forget about this keyboard.
A short real review? Did anyone wrote that You can't modify the pan of an instrument from style, live?
It can be done only in edit mode, and there, not even in play?
You can't listen in play (editing the style) and modify something.
And in live, You must be very precise when touching volumes. 1mm under the volume numbers and boooommm... The volume jumps to maximum.
I have this toy keyboard. I know what i wrote.

@@florincminor you are right, I bought two of these on an impulse, but they also have a problem when you record your own user styles, the keyboard freezes a lot when you try to record the fill section, as for my samples it’s great since it comes with a little bit over 700 mb of ram memory.. I was able to store my sound from the Yamaha DX7, Roland D50, korg M1, my gabbanelli accordion, and other sounds that I use for Mexican music, but other than that has a lot of malfunctions, I’m hoping the upgrade comes soon otherwise I just spent 1500 dollars on both for nothing.

Hi Jeremy, I have to thank you for your great work. During the passed 2 weeks I watched some hundreds of keyboard demos & reviews from your and other reviewer and shop channels. My old Yamaha CP5 is probably still one of the best pianos but carrying 25 kgs is not at all funny for an old man. So I was looking for something easier and also with more contemporary features, sounds and operability. And - surprise, surprise! - after quite a few sleepless nights on YT I made my decision and ordered a "Thomann AK-X1100" which is a Medeli-built 1:1 clone of the AK-X10 but with slightly nicer design and even a nicer price. Since I'm not considering myself as a keyboarder but just a pianist I hope that the thousands of keys and knobs and functions etc. will not drive me completely nuts (old man, you know... 🤯) and that I will not miss the 88 keys with natural piano action too much....
Anyway, thanks again for your excellent work and support and all the best from Germany!!! 😁🤘

@@JeremySee UPDATE: After 3 days of intensive testing, I have now come to the conclusion that this keyboard unfortunately does not suit my needs for 2 reasons:
      1. The mic input might be OK for karaoke once everyone has had enough alcohol, but not for more as it always sounds kind of artificial and tinny. 😖
      2. The 61 keys are definitely not enough for me, because I would have to massively change my playing style.
So I will return the Medeli AK-X10 (or the Thomann AK-X1100 respectively) and hope that I can get along better with a Yamaha PSR-EW425 and its 76 keys... 🤷🏽‍♂

Posted this in two spots since i have seen so little in English on the AKX-10. Plus, Jeremy is king of all arranger reviewers, hands down. I just got this keyboard at Alto Music, Middletown NY. As most of you know, high end arrangers are in short supply due to Covid induced shortages. Wanted a PSR SX900 but took a shot with the AKX-10. My first impression is that the sounds are very good generally (listen here). That being said, I would give the stock acoustic pianos a B+ at most played as solo instruments, at least so far. Note, I am comparing this to my Kronos (not totally fair). The styles and combination sounds are very good, however. If you play The AKX-10 through a decent set of speakers (I had it going through my Presonus board to Yamaha studio monitors), it sounds fabulous. By common consensus, Its capabilities are off the hook but I have seen capable machines go unsupported and die. Hey, I took a chance. Just learning this unit and I am expecting perhaps to load other sounds. Nevertheless, at this price point it makes everything else I have heard sound pitiful. I traded a lowly Yamaha E463 (LOL) for this and the AKG-10 simply blows that out of the water in terms of sounds, capabilities etc. Yes, it is double the price of E463 but in terms of what is can do, it easily competes with the Yamaha PSR SX600/700 boards (see Jeremy See here for confirmation). Having the 7 inch touch screen alone is a joy at this price point. Speakers are very decent and probably suitable for background music in a small restaurant environment. Durability is the question. At $700 U.S., I am not too worried. Not saying anyone else should feel the same way, however. Finally, be aware the keyboard, as Jeremy notes, has no real ecosystem to support it at this point (help Jeremy!!!), so you are on your own for a bit. Finally, I went to Staples to print out the comprehensive (190 + page) and surprisingly well written online PDF manual to great benefit. It comes with a typical Quick Start PDF manual about 60 pages. John Roks and Jeremy See are the only people I have seen demoing this machine in English, so thanks guys. Best to all.

My concept is that Yamaha is a great company with many years of experience in the market and every product that lansa has been fully tested by sound engineers and professional musicians who are the ones that give the approval, in addition to the guarantee for failure or defect of manufacturing. As for Medeli, I think it is a good company, which is just growing, but it is far from being a competition for Yamaha.

    Hello
    I bought a Medeli AKX10 keyboard.
AKX10 don't have EQ for style tracks.
Not even Pan. Why isn't this option in the mixing console? (Any arranger with higher espectations have this options)
Or modify the effects of a style in the mixing console while I am playing live?
I tried to edit a style, but it doesn't change the instruments in the style while it's playing, to be able to hear how it would sound.
Is there a menu that I don't know?
And in the Style editor, how can I see in the Event List more?
It is shown only the note and the note lenght .
COntrol Change are not shown. The Reverb send, the Chorus send, the volume.. program change..
I want to make the pan moving inside a track. How can I do that?
How can I insert in a style, a program change? I need to change at half of a Main (Main C), to be other program change.
How can I insert it in Edit Events?
    I have a Yamaha PSR A3000 Oriental.
If I record a formula on Bass, Phs1 or 2, it's played as recorded.
On AKX10 I can't even record it, because it only takes the C E G ,as C major chord.
Other notes are recorded as Event edit shows, but not played.
I try to put a line from my Yamaha PSR A3000 Oriental. THe Akx10 doesn't play the same line.
    Why?
I try, exporting from Grand Suite, a style as midi file.
And to edit it in AKX10.
But in the song, it only have the option Delete or Quantize.
How can I modify notes, or controllers?
I am waiting for response from Medeli. Thank you.

Great review and comparison. Chinese musical instruments makers already captured the acoustic piano market. They improved a lot in specially acoustic pianos and now they are like driving the market. This keyboard can surely make a headache for already established companies. But I still believe in Japanese products and a German pianos. Japanese can definitely change the market as they have long experience and they can do anything. Keyboard look interesting 🤘

Edited: I contacted Medeli Spain.. they told me that the AKX10 is expected by July, therefore what probably happend to me was that I bought a test or demo item; they assured me that they are paying a lot of attention to the quality control...

Though it may not be a well known name brand, it shiws that people that know their stuff, including visualizing and creating they overall design function, sound, features and production and material composites and such can rival or surpass the performance, price and quality of products that cost much more if they do not need the resources to build at a higher production volume level as thise bigger brands. They just may not have as good dustribution and availability.
Again you covered all points well. Great design and connector interface rear oanel, aesthetic design, quality controllers, and vast amount of tones, styles and various settings ane data storage capability for such. And the ambience lighting is a nice touch. It's hard to scrutinize the sound quslity of the voices from a video, but they sound pretty good. To me, unless they are obviously lacking, my most critical attention goes to tge acoustic and electric piano, organs and other keyboard tones, strings and acoustix guitars and wind instruments.
That's all I can think of, and can't imagine much to be finicky about except the joystick controller. I would prefer the Roland type pitch bend/modulation lever.
But I would rather get the new Casio CT-S1, as this, the arranger keyboards and even my Roland Fantom X6 I prrviously had as such a steep learning curve and capabilities. Besides the few things I wish it had, it's the best non arranger keyboard for $200 in my opinion, and a great improvement over the Casio CT-S300, except for lack of the pitchbend wheel.
One of my pastors, the worship leader at church just tokd me this Sunday he is looming into getting a new keyboard, so, I don't have to get that, but he akways consults with me, since he knows I am much more knowledgeable about what is available. His old $500 Yamaha is showing age, wear and tear, though still soubds good, but I recommended the Yamaha DGX-670, and the Roland RD 88 as a more pricy akternative I eould even pay the difference for. And I also recommended the Casio CT-S1 for him to take home and to outreaches and elsewhere.
So many choices of quality instruments at different price levels that are reasonable and affordable.
With either 88 key digital piano I mention at church, my Go:Keys and JD-Xi, there's just 3 more keyboards I would want fir different purposes. The Casio CT-S1, the Yamaha Reface CP and the Roland VR combo VR-09 B. Sweetwater includes a USB fkashdrive with custom design voices to double what comes in the keyboard.

Jeremy you are stellar in driving us to the truth. I live the « if you are not able to make music on a 700$ keyboard no chance to make it on a 1500$ more ». I havé Yamaha PSRs since 90’s years plus synths and never a problem. So it is probably in the service after sales that Yamaha makes the difference. Also in Europe if you want to save again 100$ you can buy Thomann mark which is same except lower memory for samples. Thanks to ne there

Thank you Jeremy for the comprehensive review!
I had not even ever heard about the name Medeli but Wow...., it looks impressive for the price. The screen resolution and responsiveness are great features too; I really don't like the one on the Korg PA-1000, with the graphics quality of a PacMan game from the 80s.
Anyway, when will it be available in tlhe US?!. I would like to pre-order as soon as possible!
Also, will it be able to play yamaha's psr 950 or Korg styles from a USB stick??

  • @GaryMCurran

Got me hooked! Only issue is I can't find this in the US. Only two things that I would like to see. The first is my Korg PA800 has 'Digital Drawbars', the ability to control the drawbars from the screen. The second is I would like to see a 76 key version.
Yeah, my Korg PA800 is getting long in tooth, but this is a pretty good sounding keyboard.

Jeremy, I used to believe your keyboard reviews were honest and informative and without bias! I bought a Medeli AK-X10 and quite frankly I am more than disappointed!! It really isn't a patch on the Yamaha PSR sx900 (my main keyboard) or even my PSR sx700. Why? Well, one reason is that if doesn't display lyrics when playing midi files, Both the Yamaha PSR SX900 and SX700 do! Many other cheaper/older keyboards also have this facility. Another is that GM midi files don't appear to work on this keyboard. Therefore I cannot play my midi files through the keyboard. The sounds of instruments are, er um, nothing like as authentic as on my PSR SX keyboards or even my Korg EK50.
Your thoughts would be very much appreciated.
    Mike

This was super helpful! In my home studio, I've always had an 88 weighted key midi controller and soft synths but recently I've had need for a gigging keyboard for some gigs and didn't want to lug my MIDI controller, laptop, etc. This KB seems like a great choice for a gigging KB that won't break the bank but has good sounds! Thanks for your in depth review!

  • @HubertEtAlice

Hi Jeremy, great review but I don’t share your enthusiasm.
Whereas this keyboard is jam packed with features on paper, for me there are to major issues:
    1) the sounds. When I am listening to your video, I am hearing boring Yamaha patches from 15 years ago. The Grand Piano patch of the PSR E373 and the Stage Piano of the Casio CT-X800 sound better to my ears! Same thing with the styles. They feel as if they’ve been programmed ages ago. I find that the sounds and styles of my CT-X800 are fresher. And I’d buy the DGX670 anytime over this Medeli.
    2) The second issue is the ecosystem. I am strongly doubting that Medeli would ever give the same support to their users as Yamaha and Casio are giving, for instance through their very friendly and active user forums.
The durability of this keyboard is also questionable. If there is an issue, will it be easy to repair the keyboard? What about the spare parts disponibility?
If I upgrade my CT-X800, I’ll probably go for a Casio CT-S400 or the upcoming mysterious red model with control Knobs... hopefully a revamped CT-X5000 with improved user interface?
Or else I’ll trade in my DGX650 for the new DGX670.
    Have a nice day 🌈

I see a lot of potential for me with this over all those you mentioned. I’m not so worried about old sounds seeing the features it has. I can upgrade via computer/iPad plus the sound and style expansion. If this keyboard holds up over time I think musicians better grab it quick for that price. I thought I saw 3 part harmony on website. Not sure if that is vocal but the sounds he played are very usable.

Hi Jeremy - it's been a while and I've been busy elsewhere. Methinks this keyboard is really going to upset the market. From what I could see and hear it really impressed. I disliked a couple of sounds (some trumpet-like voices were a bit thin for example) but at the price . . .well! You didn't have a lot to say on the overall quality of the styles, an area where Yamaha is usually significantly above the rest of the competition, but neither did you really voice any complaints. I don't know how widely this is (or will be) available on the international market, but it should give the majors a fright (and Yamaha for one, tends to be slow to respond to new challenges. When a new product eventually emerges it's often worth the wait, but I think the time has come when their product development divisions need to put on some pace when faced with competition like this). As they say in the classics - v-e-r-y interesting!

Sorry, my attention must have drifted during one section at my initial viewing. I did you an injustice as you discuss the flexibility of styles and style creation in detail and you also preface that with a comparative comment of the quality of the styles. It was first thing in the morning (5am) when II first watched this review and somehow the coverage of the styles quality didn't sink in. Sorry Jeremy. Watching again also reinforced the great versatility of the unit - a worthwhile exercise. The question now: I am finding little time to spend with my Yamaha 900 so I'm not getting value for money. So do I sell the Yammy and buy one of these?? I guess not. [PS. As an organist - pipe organ - that brief example of a pipe organ sounded quite authenticaly like a small baroque instrument.]

Hi, Jeremy. You are a good guy and have tried many different keyboards, including the one shown in the video. I couldn't decide on the sound after listening to the video, I want to know your opinion.
