Thanks for your wonderful exposition of RALPH. Like with your ALVINN video, you've explained it better that I ever did! All the videos in this series give people a much better understanding of how it's possible for today's self-driving cars to turn sensor data into driving commands.

Quim Last Is it me or Welch labs is getting more alien ever since it met the other "science" channels who are fan of all shows but masters of none?
I'm used to welch labs being somehow honest. Trial and error, and showing that within the video. Showing his research success, his journey, etc.
Now it,s shorter videos (I think. Edit : less time on what I'm waiting to watch. More time on "last-time" and more time on "next-time") with more talk over everything and less talk over personal journey on the topic.
Edit : I also hate how he edits his voice. Like cmon, it's obvious he applies effects over it to make it "narrative mode" but this is an old thing he retains, not something that new.
I also miss having all the focus be on the subject at hand. Now you can see his face at many clips of the video where I would expect previous him to pause on the current text with crazed out hands.
This channel feels like a RIP in the grave of look-alike channels that I personally don't like a lot ever since they had external influence.
Yes, I prefer text more than his face. Not something discriminatory, just me not wanting to care excessively about the over-all looks that don't contribute to the meaning of the video

@@yimoawanardo hmm, I just discovered this channel through this series and was immediately blown away by its high production value and well fine explanations. This channel has now become one of my favorites and easily at least in my top ten favorite science channels.
thunder sheild Watch the old series and you'll understand what I mean. The quality didn't decrease, the way of presenting content changed.
@@yimoawanardo Well let's be honest. This guy has been slaving away making amazing videos and isn't being rewarded with much of an audience yet. He's an attractive guy and maybe he should sensationalise his videos just a little to start bringing in more viewers so that he has the financial compensation to bring us stuff more frequently. I'm still loving these new series tbh

Awesome! One question: how does RALPH navigate resp. change lanes? All RALPH can do up to this point (as far as I understand it) is to follow the road, is it not?
We programmed RALPH to change lanes semi-automatically in the following way. We would hit a key on the keyboard to indicate whether we wanted it to do a left or right lane change. This would trigger the software to resample the image one-lane-width to the left or right of the current travel lane. This would suddenly make it look to RALPH like it was far to the left or right of where it should be. So RALPH would then issue a command to steer towards the center of the new travel lane.

It's too simple a premise but looking for bare minimum strategies you actually don't need to see the curvature of the road, just stay in the lane and you inherently follow the curvature. Just look directly in front of the car and in the clean road special case, just look at the corners of the car for where the road lines are. A single neural net window can be quite effective.

@@jamesmnguyen I'm not familiar with any such implementation but it's simple logic that it would work. If you can't see it, you can mask out driving video to only those corners and see that you can track the lane with such a narrow view just fine. You can't of course see cars ahead and other reasons to stop but tracking the lane you can of course do that way.
