  • Coming off the heels of the Kodiak, let's take a look at another 'mech that was featured in our Roar of the Kodiak campaign: the Horned Owl 6. It looks a lot like the regular old Homed Owl... except it trades the jump jets for a targeting computer.
    Equipped with an array of pulse lasers, and the speed to pick its range, the Horned Owl 6 seems like it could be one of the most terrifying 35 tonners out there - except it costs as much as a 75 ton Marauder.
    Still... the pulse laser/TC combo is nasty. So get comfortable, grab a drink and let's see what Battlytics has to say about the Horned Owl 6.

    I think it balances out pretty well. Targeting computers get obnoxiously heavy and large the second Pulse weapons are involved. Most Owls have Jump Jets, but this one doesn't, I'm assuming, because of that Targeting Computer.

      Yeah the standard is just ad good in my opinion with the 2xMPL plus LPL and 6/9/6 movement. Take a 4/5 pilot and it shoots at +2. Sweet machine.

    Okay. This is interesting because Mechanical Frog did something similar, and I think I can trace it back to MechFactory.
    The record sheet for the Horned Owl 6 in Rec Guide 11 has 10 Double heatsinks, full armor and a BV of 1,475.
    Also the Large Pulse Laser is in the CT, not the arm, messing up your Threat Assessment diagram.
    The MUL Horned Owl has a BV of 1,475 and 4 pips of armor compared to the 3 pips you get with 96 armor.

    Another potential Raven mech. At 35 tons rear armor should be able to protect the mech when it takes a fall and clan ER small laser does 5 damage. The rear armor looks on point. The Peregrine with a 4/5 is commonly seen and some have noted this in the comments. I like the Peregrine “Horned Owl” standard and 6. I would consider this clan light a bodyguard unit for a more lethal mech like the Behemoth.
    ...
    The TC and pulse lasers are not broken. Not many mechs or configurations have that combo and most end up expensive in BV like the 3050 Masakari “Warhawk” C. Because of this lethal combo these mechs often become primary when they near the focus of the battle. It was not uncommon for large pulse laser lines of Smoke Jaguar Daishi “Dire Wolf” A’s and Masakari “Warhawk” C.
    None the less having to contest an objective under fire from a Turkina “Turkey” B. If you have ever heard the joke about cooking a turkey in the BT community it is in reference to overheating this Turkina B to win. November and December are the Jade Falcons months to be played. Those are the Turkey months.

    TCs + PL combo is pretty broken but it can be hard to keep such a mech alive. They often get focus fired because they are such a high risk opponent on the board to let stay in the fight. Especially, if it has a huge jump movement rate.

  • @TinBane

    Interesting! Seems like a powerful combo, but just so vulnerable! I think it’s probably a good flanking mech that could bully IS lights and mediums sent down the flank, or (hear me out here) an actual good urban mech. Fast and lots of stopping power!

    Imagine being the poor IS sap who first encountered a Horned Owl and thought it was a security mech.
    And I would be inclined to bet on the PXH-3PL over this with decent terrain. Shorter range but 6/9/6.

  • @WolfHreda

    Personally, I think pairing targeting computers with pulse lasers should be outlawed for Clan machines. For 1 LPL and 2 MPLs, Clanners pay 2 tons for a TC. For IS 'mechs with that same weapon set, we pay 3 tons, and that's on top of the fact that our LPLs are heavier and less effective, our MPLs are less effective, and the 3 crits that TC occupies are at a higher premium than in a Clan 'mech where almost every system they have is both lighter and more compact.
    And that's before you consider that the default IS MechWarrior operates at a 4/5 GP score, while default Clan pilots are at 3/4.
    Use a TC to remove the penalty for Heavy Lasers and such. Perfectly fine. But for an already stacked system to add just one more advantage, allowing a default level Clan MechWarrior to shoot like an uncontested legend is too fucking much.

    Clan pulse lasers absolutely need to be a -1 and not a -2. They would still be far better than the innersphere version and much more balanced. On 2d6 a -2 is significantly better than twice as good as a -1.

    My second favorite mech by esthetic (favorite is vapor eagle)

  • @fistan5447
    @fistan5447 5 місяців тому +1

    I think problem only stems from Large Pulse lasers. As they can, technically have -1 modifier in longrange (2 as base, -1 TarComp, -1 Interface Cockpit, -1 Improved Targeting, Long quirk) Problem is there are too many things affecting target modifiers, in a game where benefit is exponential. MPL on the other hand is not that problematic as it behaves as any other dedicated long range weapon within its long range. Damage is not gamebreaking either. Only real benefit it has, is -2 modifier at short range which makes it an anti-light/anti-jump weaponry. SPL is strictly anti-infantry so no probs there. I do believe though LPL+TC is busted, particularly if comboed with PartialWings+IJJ combos, but aside from that pulses are fine. -1 bonus for LPL only, would actually be balanced.
    I do believe cERPPC should be considered the highest peak a weapon should reach, and anynew weapons that might be added in the future, should only add variety within different ranges/damage/hitmod combos, all very slightly below the efficiency of present weaponry. So i dont like those experimental RISC weapons that hit 20dmg at cERLL ranges. I would however love those Heavy LLs, if they didnt have to hit penalty and had 14ish heat instead, for us to use them exclusively as alternative to ERPPC in fast light mechs. But if you try to add any other secondary weaponry, ERPPC always comes out ahead which isnt really much fun. So iHLLs are usable, strickly in very fast lightish mechs, but you still feel they are added for the sake of being added, like those HLL Warhammer IIC variants, and there are better existing options in universe for that weapon to be adopted in any form.

    • @DeathfromAboveWargaming
      @DeathfromAboveWargaming  5 місяців тому +1

      Excellent assessment! I agree in the cerPPC - and wouldn’t mind seeing some degree of overall weapon rebalancing.

  • @DevianID
    @DevianID 5 місяців тому +1

    Love the Battlytics! For sure pulse and tcomps are 'broken', in that gunnery is +20% for the whole mech, while tcomps are +25% for just the offensive half, and pulse lasers are about +16% for the offensive half. So its effectively +40% for gunnery for 1 better accuracy, versus 25 or 16, meaning pulse and tcomp accuracy is just too cheap! We included a 'cheese' modifier for our ranked play stuff at MRC, limiting the total pulse, for just this reason... A list with lots of pulse just costs less bv then a list without pulse and upgraded gunnery to hit the same numbers.

  • @NRSGuardian
    @NRSGuardian 5 місяців тому +1

    Considering the Horned Owl was originally designed as a garrison Mech, and that many Clans use it as a training Mech it makes sense that it would be outfitted with equipment to make it easier to hit with its weapons. Not only is it more efficient to have it piloted by those with crappy gunnery, it is also lore accurate. Also, according to lore Goliath Scorpion Mechwarriors don't use the targeting computer to make it easier to hit an opponent, but to allow them to target specific components, as they consider using the TC just so that they can make it easier to hit an opponent as cheating. Also, they consider themselves accurate enough that they don't need the help and to suggest otherwise is an insult to their skills.
    Edit: Considering how annoying it is to fight fast hovercraft and VTOLs if an opponent decided to bring a list full of Warriors and Savannah Masters, then I think you would be well within your right to bring some Horned Owl 6s.
