What a heart-wrenching story... You don't know whether to feel sad, angry, or shocked. Maybe all three.. To end the Warcraft story like this (and no, WoW doesn't count) is truly shocking in that the evil side won in the end and Arthas, our original hero, succumbed to it and will rule the undead world forever
***** It does. I'm just whining because I never converted to WoW since it would have costed me too much money and time lol. I'm just slightly jealous I never got to experience the end since I was only RTS with Warcraft. Though I really do think the story of his demise could have been better and wish it had been done with Warcraft 4 RTS (if they ever make one).
I wonder how everything had looked like if Arthas were still a paladin? had he ruled Lordaeron together with Jaina, or by himself, how had the horde and the alliance looked like today, that is probably something we will never find out? :(
***** lol, moslty because it's so sad.... prince Arthas, transformed into the encarnation of evil... up there, cold, alone, dark.... Fuck i'm about to cry dammit.
Would have been perfect way to end the warcraft movie. The whole movie could have started with Arthas as a child meeting the king of stormwind on that rainy night. Arthas growing up and seeing his first Orc with the audience. Us watching him fall in love and become strong.Watching him see the world for the first time as a human with the rest of us as an audience. All the races and far off lands. Then watch him fall into madness trying to protect the ones he cared most. Could have captured this tone perfectly. A Movie so powerful it would have ended up there with LOTR trilogy.
+greendayownall123 Warcraft lore has the potential. Much more depths than Lotr story, so if it would been told right, it would totaly torture the Lord of the rings. Just so you know, Lord of the rings, is absolutely one of my favorite lore, so i'm no hater.
Just shed a few manly tears. It's insane to believe how long ago this was and how far Blizzard has fallen since. No Warcraft will ever be the same without this awesome character.
I remember these words clearly: 0:20 "Remember, Arthas, we are paladins. Vengeance cannot be a part of what we must do. If we allow our passions to turn to bloodlust, then we will become as vile as the orcs."
Actually, the helm and the armor are all the same, the Plate of the Damned. The armor was, like Frostmourne, given to Arthas by Ner'zhul, the original Lich King.
+Based Pharaoh Actually, you're both right in that since Ner'zhul was sealed inside the Plate of the Damned and the Helm of Domination by the Burning Legion, but he gave the armor to Arthas, along with Frostmourne, which was linked to him too. But the Helm of Domination was still inside the Frozen Throne, along with whatever parts of the Plate of the Damned he didn't cast out of the Frozen Throne to find their way to Arthas. Only after Ner'zhul ordered Arthas to take up the crown and merge with him did Arthas remove the Helm of Domination and put it on. But now that I think about it, I think Bolivar would look cooler as the new Lich King if he took up the rest of the Plate of the Damned still in the Frozen Throne, along with various parts to still resemble the Lich King before him. Hope he does get to have such awesome gear also (and I would like it if the helmet turned blue again and make his eyes and the burning cracks on his body blue too).
It was a true story xD... Like a legend from the books... Long, cold, painful but very straight way full of strength, honor and power... It was that way what Arthas has come throu... For me the end of Warcraft is here... It was beautiful start from WC1,WC2 (with their heroes) to an arguable WoW... But the best part was WC3... Cause you weren't "just anotrher paladin\dark knight\sbdy else"...You were them... You were him....You lead your men to the north... It's you found Frostmourne, and you became a Lich king... Everyone of us (who played WC3).... It was a beautiful nordic orthern legend... without asian kung-fu pandas... =\
I come back and watch this cinematic every so often, 2:10 my favorite part in video game history begins, such an ominous haunting, yet tragic feel to it.
The music in the cinematic is better-and faaaar more fitting than anything else. The choir's chanting when he dons the helm, the sudden silence, then the haunting chanting as it zooms out from Arthas atop the frozen throne.
OMG!!! arthas sit on the throne with that beatyful piece of music while the camera slowly moves away its just.... AMAZING... one of the best moments of videogame history.. still now it gives me the chills...
+Irwan Haziq It also epic when hearing this word "Your young prince will find only death in cold north" . That whisper always give me goosebumbs..Mediev foresaw the fate of Prince Arthas will lose his sanity when claim the curse blade Frosmourne when travels to Northrend to persue his vengenge.. but Jaina encounter that "You Arthas is only doing what he believes is right" but Mediev reply that "Commendable as that may be, his passion will be his undoing it falls to you know young sorceres" ( I like this conversation).Knowing that Arthas effort when going to Northerend was a lost cause and wasteful.. but for Arthas what he have done was only to carry the burden to save his homeland and his people. That sad :(
uygar başkaya Both Arthas, My Son and Invincible share the "Arthas" theme. This particular version (the one I linked) is used only at the end of the Warcraft III cinematic and is the first time the theme was publicly heard.
it was very chilling o.o i got the goose bumps! the end where the epic music starts to play and it zooms farther out, you can see things flying around. kinda reminds me of lord of the rings o.o
I love this cinematic, it does such a great job of showing the final transformation for Arthas. When he has finally ascended to the top of the glacier there's a feeling of divinity the way he stoically sits atop the throne, waiting. I'm disappointed he wasn't a bit more badass in WoW.
@Ned406 This means that the other personalities still have a small effect on the lich king which is shown in wotl. The mentioning of the lich king that he used to be a shaman, specifically 'I used to be a shaman', which was in howling fjord I think and the fact that Matthias Lehner, his good personality, was not completely banished and he was having an effect on the scourge by preventing them further expansion in northrend and the plaguelands.
@BENBRAGGINS1: Arthas builded Icecrwon Citadel over Frozen Throne so it doesn't look same anymore. But you still can see ''remains'' if you watch it closely.
@xtaza911 Actually, there was a little bit of Arthas left in Lich King all the time. That part held scourge from destroying Azeroth. Like Uther's soul stated in Halls of Reflection.
:-O It's been too long since I watched this cinematic, didn't remember that the music at the beginning of the cinematic for WoLK is the same (or VERY similar) to the music at the end of this one. I'm always impressed by how they use music in their cinematics, really builds the emotion.
@DjinnGuru The armor, plate of the damned, was encased in ice along with the Helm of Domination. When Arthas broke the icy prison he put on the helm first and then the armor. Bolvar Fordragon now wears the armor as he is the new lich king.
Arthas' journey was very interesting. He went from the most possible candidate as the main character to one of the biggest villains in games, to me at least. A very interesting reversal of the Hero's Journey.
@azir64 About the less canon line from metzen, that relates to when in game lore conflicts against the book lore. The in game lore takes precedence over the book in those cases. The book says he killed his humanity and ner'zhul, and yet when you do halls of reflection you have uther/terenas telling us thats the human side of arthas is holding the scourge back. In game says he still has his human side, the book says there isnt. In game > book in that case.
@DjinnGuru Arthas did put on the Plate of the Dmaned as it was stated in the Manual of Monsters which was co-authored by Chris Metzen, he creates the lore.
@DjinnGuru Heres the break down of the fight, Lich King freezes Fordring in a block of ice, players starts fighting Arthas, several times during the fight the players get to go inside frostmourne as a way for the lich king to trap them for all eternity but they escape with the help of terenas. When the lich king is at 10% health he wipes out the entire party with a single blast, starts talking about how he was testing the players, started raising the players as generals of the scourge...
@combos16 Bolvar served as regent of stormwind when Varian went missing. Varian returned and Bolvar lead the Alliance forces in Northrend. Then comes Angrathar the Wrathgate cinematic which made him look awesome and then the death of he lich king cinematic which made him even more awesome. Although he doesn't have a lot of lore he is a bad ass character for putting on the helm of domination.
@DjinnGuru Ok , I read the manual of monsters again and it says that Arthas possessed the armor but it doesn't say he wore it. Whether it's still encased in ice or not I have no idea. Possessed could mean he was protecting it.
@KisiroKitsune If that's the case , why did Arthas become normal when he lost his helmet? Ner'Zhul spirit is stored in the lichkings helmet. And when Bolvar took the Lich King's helmet , at that point his voice changed to an orc one..
@ragnarokvr1 Plus the 10/25 of the best heroes from either side, not to mention Ashbringer is probably the best Holy weapon, add in that Arthas was probably still recovering from the forsaken attack and it could also be said that Arthas wanted to lose.
He did, the armour was only partial, and went over his Death Knight armour, if you look closely between this video and the trailer for Wrath of the Lich King, you will see that the chest piece has an additional layer that is one of the piece from the Lich King's armour.
@KisiroKitsune Q. Will Ner'zhul appear at any point in 3.3 or the near future? A. Well, he is a chunk of the Lich King now. But if you mean will he appear as an orc, we're not ready to tell his story just yet. We have a lot of stories left to tell, but his is a good one.
@JohnyVanJohnson It wasn't. There was plenty of clues and instances that led us to know Arthas and the scourge more pre-tbc. Stratholme, Scholomance and Naxxramas for example.
After reading nearly the hole page about the Lich King on wowwiki, and watching this right after... it really gets a epic feeling of such a great story line... the best story line of all games if you ask me ;)
@distortedparadise the're making a warcraft movie not sure if it's about warcraft III or world of warcraft i think it's going to be about the entire saga not sure.
continued @ WOUTRT Maintaining his position in the plaguelands... woah... That must have been tough. Lots of competition there... a few insane blood crazed humans and even fewer sane ones.
@Scotsch12345 Q. Will Ner'zhul appear at any point in 3.3 or the near future? A. Well, he is a chunk of the Lich King now. But if you mean will he appear as an orc, we're not ready to tell his story just yet. We have a lot of stories left to tell, but his is a good one. this is from the twitter wow developers chat.
It was more then five years. I remember something like 3 years pass for each expansion, so it was more like 4 from WCIII to WoW, and then 3 years of vanilla, then 3 years of TBC, and with so many scourge and an almost unlimited access to saronite I can easily see them build The Ice Crown Citadel in 10 years.
@Scotsch12345 I've read what happens, and the developers on twitter and the blue poster Crygil on the wow forums have stated that ner'zhul and arthas are indeed still merged and equal, ner'zhul is not dead. And they stated this AFTER the book had been out. In game lore will always be before fan faction book lore.
@KisiroKitsune "Also, it bears mentioning that the Lich King and Arthas are actually two separate entities. The Lich King is the lingering spirit of the orcish shaman Ner'zhul. Ner'zhul originally started the demonic invasions in Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal. So, in a sense, the entity that players know as the Lich King has been around for a long time, even long before Arthas was born, and has had an even larger hand in shaping the" ongoing history of the Warcraft universe." ~Blizzard
the story of arthas is as well sad as amazing that he could inflict so much damage and only in his dieing moments realise what hes done. like when his fathers spirits bows before arthas when hes dieing. then you can see his remorse and pain he has to see his father in his eyes
@DjinnGuru There is the fact that a lich king must always exist to control the scourge. Ner'zhul controlling it is a bad idea so Bolvar Fordragon took on the mantle. Destroying the lich king does not make the undead disappear, it will only make them more crazier since they will have no leash. Even though frostmourne and the armour were destroyed/damaged the Helm of Domination still exists so ner'zhuls spirit is still alive.
@ShadowBj84 Deathwing have his own will. And it's a strong one, in the end of the War of the Ancients, the Demon Soul was the key item, for the summoning of Sargeras, and even after the the attack at the summoning circle was succesful, they could not remove the Demon youl from it's place, thus could not stop the summoning itself, but DW wanted the Demon Soul so badly, that he managed to penetrate thought every froce field.
@mrguyrun Yeah, this was like right before the start of Vanilla. Then Vanilla->TBC the scourge created Icecrown Citadel. Then upon its completion Arthas attacked.
+dk2k1 To my knowledge there doesn't seem to be an official track for this, but the closest you're gonna get is the track called "Invincible". It has the same lyrics but it's sung differently here, don't know how lucky you'll get trying to find it.
@egomaniac654 yes i played wc 3 and the expansion, and i mean what he did after the events in wc 3, besides plaguelands are frequently attacked by the argent crusade and the forsaken, but u could be right about angrathar
@DjinnGuru Due to the fact deathwing was corrupted by the old gods and the fact that he has been resting in deepholm, the elemental plane of earth, he has gained more power than he originally had. Corruption by the old gods tends to make that person more powerful, for example, cho'gall summoned c'thun back but because of that his body mutated and he became stronger. Same thing happened with deathwing, he has become so strong that he had metal plates forged on his skin to keep his body intact.
San dro Was gonna upload this myself on youtube but got the same graphic. Even looked at it directly from the game and realized it isnt as great video quality as I remembered it. Also found its about 9 mb per minute whereas Dsineys Aladdin has about 22 mb per minute.
@darkicd Q. Will Ner'zhul appear at any point in 3.3 or the near future? A. Well, he is a chunk of the Lich King now. But if you mean will he appear as an orc, we're not ready to tell his story just yet. We have a lot of stories left to tell, but his is a good one. ^ this is from the wow developers chat on twitter well AFTER that book got released. Ner'zhul is not dead nor is he consumed nor suppressed/banished, he is still alive.
you either Die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain
***** You're on warcraft video, you have no right to use that as a insult.
NeovisionX Why ?! Are we being nerd for respecting the Wow lore instead of fucking GRRM?!
Oh God. This truly made me cry. It is so emotional and sad. Everything with Arthas and the Lich King has always been gold
The story of Arthas is truly the best story ever made
Proof that sad endings can be epic too.
I don't see it as sad , beautiful
Sad how blizzard ruined warcraft
What a heart-wrenching story... You don't know whether to feel sad, angry, or shocked. Maybe all three.. that'd change the entire wow history as he's such a big part of it
Indeed. :P
Monbergdk1 Yogg saron would take over, because we would have never gone to Northrend in Wrath
What a fucking way to end a game.
The Amazing Ace Meracruzer Original ending
The song at the end is so hauntingly beautiful, sends a shiver down my spine every time I listen to it.
for sure this cinematic better than warcraft movie!!
2:16 - Goosebumps time!
Yes. I don't know why.... but it is so cold..... damn.
Darroch192 Probably because it's in Northrend ;)
JK, I know exactly what you mean, it's so dark and chilling =)
***** lol, moslty because it's so sad.... prince Arthas, transformed into the encarnation of evil... up there, cold, alone, dark.... Fuck i'm about to cry dammit.
Darroch192 Yeah, it's epic
He looks so damn lonely on that frozen throne. :'(
Still the best fictional character ever imo
the music at the end is just awesome and simply fits the sad story of arthas...
A lonely king
What a lovely frozen tower-of-babel-thingy.
Almost as good as the magnificent icy badass sitting atop its peak.
Could have captured this tone perfectly. A Movie so powerful it would have ended up there with LOTR trilogy.
I think it would decimate the Lord of The Rings movie's. If done right.
Zgmflegend Nothing can decimate the Lord of the Rings..
Massive Tits Sounds like Anakin Skywalker Kappa
+greendayownall123 Warcraft lore has the potential. Much more depths than Lotr story, so if it would been told right, it would totaly torture the Lord of the rings. Just so you know, Lord of the rings, is absolutely one of my favorite lore, so i'm no hater.

Actually, the helm and the armor are all the same, the Plate of the Damned. The armor was, like Frostmourne, given to Arthas by Ner'zhul, the original Lich King.

Don't mute the video and listen to some overrated song. Instead bask in the epic original soundtrack it has!
+dawsonoo7 Or the riveting dialogue.
"You lied to your men and betrayed the mercenaries who fought for you, what's happenin' to you Arthas?"
The music in the cinematic is better-and faaaar more fitting than anything else. The choir's chanting when he dons the helm, the sudden silence, then the haunting chanting as it zooms out from Arthas atop the frozen throne.

@xtaza911 Actually, there was a little bit of Arthas left in Lich King all the time. That part held scourge from destroying Azeroth. Like Uther's soul stated in Halls of Reflection.

Gotta love that song at the very end.
@BannananaaBrigade those are the voices of important people u encounter during the campaign in wc 3 ,they were uther , muradin ,medivh
@Insane01990 What? Isn't Main Menu of FT some random dramatic howling?
@Scotsch12345 I've read what happens, and the developers on twitter and the blue poster Crygil on the wow forums have stated that ner'zhul and arthas are indeed still merged and equal, ner'zhul is not dead. And they stated this AFTER the book had been out. In game lore will always be before fan faction book lore.
2:17 , Best scene ever. I love the lich king. Bow before the unbeatable hero !
The song at 2:18 is Arthas, My Son. It's on the wotlk soundtrack. It sounds a little different, but it's technically the same song.
@PBJtime789
No it's not, it's the knee of the armor the Lich king was bound to.
It is the full suit of armour, not just the helmet inside the block
1:35 one does not simply pick up the Helm of the lich king.
@aapke93 theres alot of things that makes your spine chill?
@KisiroKitsune
"Also, it bears mentioning that the Lich King and Arthas are actually two separate entities. The Lich King is the lingering spirit of the orcish shaman Ner'zhul. Ner'zhul originally started the demonic invasions in Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal. So, in a sense, the entity that players know as the Lich King has been around for a long time, even long before Arthas was born, and has had an even larger hand in shaping the" ongoing history of the Warcraft universe."

the story of arthas is as well sad as amazing that he could inflict so much damage and only in his dieing moments realise what hes done. like when his fathers spirits bows before arthas when hes dieing. then you can see his remorse and pain he has to see his father in his eyes
I just wanted to yell "roll need ! roll need!" when the helm bounced down the steps.
Anyone know what the name of the song/ soundtrack is during this awesome cinematic is? It really makes the whole video. Thanks in advance.
I need to know what the name of the song at 2:13 is. It's the sound of absolute despair. There's no other way to describe it.
+dk2k1 To my knowledge there doesn't seem to be an official track for this, but the closest you're gonna get is the track called "Invincible". It has the same lyrics but it's sung differently here, don't know how lucky you'll get trying to find it.
Nick Borg
Thanks.
@distortedparadise havent u heard about the WoW movie coming out in 2012?
My favourite cinematic along with Arthas betrayal. Guess I love Arthas.
San dro Was gonna upload this myself on youtube but got the same graphic. Even looked at it directly from the game and realized it isnt as great video quality as I remembered it. Also found its about 9 mb per minute whereas Dsineys Aladdin has about 22 mb per minute.
Uther: You lost your mind, Arthas.
It's from Culling of Stratholme :D
@darkicd
@HellOwnerz i guess in some ways you are right, but did you read the book dude? he did some fucked up things after he took that sword....
