I do still love A Catholic education. The ep released between it and the first creation stuff "God knows it's true" was/is particularly brilliant too. Great list mate.
Yo. Enjoy your stuff, Jason, obviously including the videos with Kramzer and Joe. Became a Fannies fan late in life, and I'm a sucker for jangle, so I gravitated what I would term the group's classic period that roughly corresponds to the years with Paul Quinn manning the drum kit (by far the most musical of Teenage Fanclub's many drummers, to my ear.) My ranking: 1. Songs from Northern Britain; 2. Grand Prix; 3. Bandwagonesque; 4. Shadows; 5. 13; 6. Here; 7. Howdy; 8. Man-Made; 9. A Catholic Education; 10. Words of Wisdom and Hope; 11. The King. Just a few notes. Really agree that "Songs from Northern Britain" constitutes the band's most "quintessential" and "beautiful" album. "Grand Prix" is the first album I heard and it hooked me. "Sparky's Dream," "Neil Jung" and "About You" all gobsmacked me from the get-go, and I noted that they were from the three different writers. Not many bands could boast that sort of songwriting heft. Not writers especially given to lyrical nuance, I think it's fair to say, but geniuses in terms of crafting melodies and harmonies within all those classic power-pop song structures. Agree with a lot of your comments. But I can't really abide McIntire's kitchen-sink production on Man-Made. Doesn't serve a decent set of songs well. Slightly surprised, given your fondness for "13," that you didn't mention the epic "Gene Clark." Cheers, mate.
Grand Prix is my favorite. Bandwagonesque is okay. The Concept is fantastic, and the rest of that album is just fine, but nothing to write home about. Thirteen would be my second fav.
I’m really enjoying your channel and I’ve been particularly impressed by the artists/bands you’ve chosen to list thus far. If you’re open to requests, I’d love for you to consider the following suggestions: Ween Felt REM Clinic Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Echo & The Bunnymen The Fall (that’d be a challenge!) Siouxsie & The Banshees Badfinger Manic Street Preachers
Christian Ewen definitely open to requests and a few of those are ones I was already considering anyways. So maybe I’ll move those up the list a bit. Thanks for watching!
Teenage Fanclub albums ranked: 1. Grand Prix (1995) 2. Songs From Northern Britain (1997) 3. Bandwagonesque (1991) 4. Man-Made (2005) 5. Thirteen (1993) 6. Howdy! (2000) 7. Shadows (2010) 8. Here (2016) 9. A Catholic Education (1990) 10. Words of Wisdom and Hope [w/ Jad Fair] (2002) 11. Endless Arcade (2021) 12. The King (1991) I wouldn’t say every song on Bandwagonesque is great; I don’t think the album is that great, I think it’s just a teeny tiny bit overrated. Case in point: The second track on the album, Satan. It’s a short instrumental interlude and it’s basically a grindcore song, and I don’t like it at all. I think it’s completely out of place on the record and completely pointless.
As someone who has been a fan right from the beginning (or at least from God Knows it's True came out in 1990) I have to say I disagree with most of this list. For me The King is higher, purely for Opal Inquest and Ballad of Bow Evil, I appreciate it's not to everyone's taste though. Similarly, A Catholic Education is brilliant and probably my favourite of their albums. I tend to listen to everything up to Howdy but must go back to the later ones to see if I can get into them. As well as being a fantastic band they are also great people; I met Gerry and Norman during their tour for Grand Prix and they were so friendly and tolerant of me being a nervous teenager.
Good list! I rate Catholic Education higher (near the top) because it has all the melody plus a bit more energy, attitude and an appealing looseness compared to later releases
I wouldn't say it's better than Nevermind, but Bandwagonesque is pretty darn good. Maybe time for a remaster when their next album comes out in September? 12. The King (1991) ★½ 11. I’ve actually been listening to it recently, getting prepared for our 1990 Albums of the year video. It’s on the cusp, so we’ll see if it makes the cut.

Grand Prix at 7……!?!?!?!?
Grand Prix is way too low! Pretty much agree with everything else though.

My list;

I fully agree!
“The album ends up sounding a bit one-dimensional. There’s a sameness to the record..”
False.

Not bad, I've been a fan of the Fannies for 30 years (since I was 16). I would've placed A Catholic Education a bit higher but you did a good job
Great video countdown man.
Bandwagonesque fulfilled an empty space I had in 91 for a new kickbutt Cheap trick album
Wow Catholic Education is in my top 3...glad 13 is up there though (my favorite)
Hi .. lists are a personal thing but I’m enjoying your detailed reviews.. best wishes rob
We have the exact same taste in music sir. Blows my mind how similar

I actually love the “comatose” side of them. Including Endless Arcade, which I’ve listened to a lot. Though my favorites are Grand Prix and SFNB.
where would you place Endless Arcade?
I’ve only listened once but first impression is that it would be pretty low. 2nd or 3rd from bottom maybe.
