"Break Contact"... (traditional military definition: "Retreat", though not to be confused with "Rout"). No, there's no "difference" between the unprofessional, civilianesque, managerial term "Break Contact" and the correct, military term "Retreat". Amateurs would have to re-discover what they horse-laugh when they see it traditionally, as when whinnying like hyenas at courageous European linear tactics that honorably protected civilians (and still would) from hostilities by bearing heraldic colors as being "stupid" or "suicidal" yet, having to rely on vulnerable radios and other gadgets by abandoning military colors and formations and thinking that crawling and hiding and making all that looks like their camouflage (civilian quarters) a legitimate target constitutes "bravery". Tactical or strategic "Retreat" does not mean "surrender" or "rout". Traditional (real) military tactics can account for "modern" automatic shot ("fire" -- is actually the command to abandon battle stations and to "Man Fire Stations" aboard ship). Automatic shot is absolutely no different from aimed flintlock platoon volley by sections which was, and would still be, along with modern bolt action, definitely as accurate as automatic within range. Real military discipline in formation made (and can still make) flintlocks (and, before that, slings and bows), as well as modern bolt action, into automatic weapons. That's the purpose of drill in formations -- it's not just for ceremony. A real understanding of ballistics and the use of traditional, militarily professional close and extended order drill, especially at double interval, can instill and accomplish more than is only psychologically assumed to be accomplished by civilianesque "shoot and scoot" notions that rely on industrial machinery for "discipline" instead of real discipline (which is not accomplished by hazing) of personnel. Confederate Lt. General Longstreet is said by some to be the originator of modern trench (which really includes the "shoot and scoot" form of) warfare as an unimaginative, panicked expedient against casualties from misused, static linear tactics. Linear tactics must be (they always needed to have been) dynamic to avoid enemy shot. The constant, concentratable, aimable, voluminous shot from organized, maneuverable, spirited forces on the march in discipined formation can (and did, for centruries) achieve the same as recently adopted "shoot and scoot" tactics but, without precarious dependence on vulnerable modern Big Industry to enable it.
You typed all that for no reason, it's very very simple, the US military (or at least the Army) doesn't "retreat", we retrograde to a better fighting position. The term "break contact" is used in the real military, never heard a real soldier refer to "retreating".
"I'm up, he sees me, he sees me, he sees me, he sees me, he sees me, he sees me..."
