I have used 26 gauge magnet wire and the core is soft iron core.
Make around 900-1200 turns of insulated copper wire.
Please visit my instructables page for calculation details.
Industrial electromagnets can lift tonnes of weight and you can calculate your solenoid according to your application.

idea, you keep the metal core longer, so it goes into a drill, then wind up the copper, and then cut the piece to length. But overall simple stuff, thanks for sharing.
I enjoyed your video. It was very helpful. Thank you!
Great how to. Drawing schematic on connector board makes it easy to follow. Fast way to remove enamel insulation from magnet wire! Hope to see more from you.
Good video with good instructions!
I don't know much about electromagnets but need to make a tool for a specific task. I have snapped a half shaft on my land rover and need to remove the broken end. The hole I need to pass the tool down is about 1" in diameter and 3' deep. The magnet would need to be as strong as possible to pull on the broken end to disengage it from the splines in the diff. So my questions are does the size of the core iron matter and also what gauge wire should i use for maximum strength in the space I have available? I was going to try and attach it to the end of a broom handle.
Nice video ...I have to make Similar one for trimmer.. can you guide me about how many turns and what gauge should be preffered
.
This is true content 👍👍👍
Nice project, looking at the design I think the coil is maybe around 10 ohms, so maybe
1.2 amps which is ok for 1000 turns of 26 gauge you say you use. With that size battery you should use some current control ie an online fuse and you should also deal with the large back emf generated at switching since induced voltage is proportional to rate of change of current and it will be high, this would also help to eliminate rf interference when switching
🤓🤓
I think a flyback diode with snubber capacitor should do the trick
i have a question what if i wanted to use a circuit board so how can i make the connections since im a secondary school student can you kindly show me the circuit diagram?
excellent. Thank you.
this is an educative video, thx
Hi, great video mate, but I have some queries...
How does length and diameter of effect the electromagnet strength?
I understand more no of turns are better, so does a smaller dia. core is better?
Also what is better having a single layer of coil over a long core or multiple layer of coil over a short core.
Thanks.
Longer will be better but it will waste lot of wire
Smaller dia will be better to but it wil become very hot after a few minutes due to the resistance of the wire
So the combination between long wire and reasonable dia will give the best performance. And about the layer because the wire is long so we need to make layer over layer, it just effects a little bit so don't worry.

really cool my friend
How to calculate the magnetic force during design so we will no how strong a load it can lift?
Can i use 22 gauge wire
Excellent video. If I were to have the same amount of turns and wire size, but had it so the core wasn't fixed to make it into a solenoid, would the solenoid have the same pulling force of 5 kg?
The closer the wires are together, the stronger the field. That’s why a solenoid is the most efficient way to create on of these things
Whats the battery voltage you used ? If I remove solenoid from water filter, and attach it to the battery you used, will it work same?
nice! what was the amp of the battery?
Absolutely useful.

Excellent video sir .. Can i use 36 to 38 Gauge magnet wire ?
thanks a lot for you reply i have two question (1) 36 gauge is very thin in 36 gauge and tiny compare with 26 gauge wire so how the resistance is very high in 36 gauge (2) if i use 230 v supply which wire and how many turns and iron rod size will capable to handle? kindly get back to me with your view on this
Arun v , the resistance of wire is given by (resistivity of wire)*(length of wire) divided by area of cross section.
for 220 v supply... make sure your coil impedance is high enough so that the max current through wire is not exceeded.
www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm
above link is for max current and resistance per km for particular gauge of wire. You do the the math and find the exact wire you want for your application.
You might revist my channel any time. Thank you!
@@TheTechnocrat does that mean the resistance of 36gauge is weaker compare to 26gauge wire.

@Michael Wallace how??
@Michael Wallace ohh i seem..
Thanks for the info
Neat and good video for understanding. i am having some questions 1. if i use 36 gauge wire in mini transformer bobbin around 2.5 cm how many turns need for to make powerful magnet 2. for 26 gauge if do instead 900 turns if i do 100 turns what will be changes happen ?
Arun v , higer the number of turns.. higher will be the magnetic strength.
Also the current through the electromagnet is proportional to field strength and current depends on resistance of coil.
Here in your case the 36 gauge wire will have higher resistance than the 26 gauge wire for the same length of wire... hence you can apply higher voltage to 36 gauge wire without exceeding the current limit of the wire.
So you have to design these points in mind and also the field strength formula.
Hope this helps
@@TheTechnocrat What is the current limit of the wire?
What's the length of wire used in single one
Please help me understand how you're getting 8.7 ohms resistance? do you mean across all the wires or just in the coil? from the links and info provided, i got an answer of 0.153 ohms
if you have that kind of constant resistance from the first place your wire will get heated up and burned with just a few minutes because of hight current. its so simple use multimeter to measure your resistance in the coil before supplying
Bro tell me how U calculated 0.153 ohm resistance???..let me know I can help U clear Ur doubt

Hi Techno, I am trying to make a permanent magnet remagnetiser using 2 electro magnets for remagnetising slot car motor magnets, I have had some success but the electromagnets aren't strong enough, is it better to have a long core with less layers of windings or a short core with more layers of windings or does it not matter? I have used 260 grams of 14AWG wire around a 200mm long 16mm diameter iron core but it is feeble compared with your results, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Short core with more turns
you all are fools becouse thr wire have no cover why is the 24 v electric current is not sparking
How many volts for toggle switch
Hey, great work on the video.
I am actually trying to conduct the faraday's experiment at school and I need an electromagnet to penetrate a coil of to induce a current. How many turn do I need for such electromagnet.
600 to 1300 turns of 22 to 26 gauge on a ferrite core is good enough.

Can I used this coil for Eddy current breaking system
Hi, the video portrays an interesting way of making electromagnet with basic tools, however, I am curious does this electromagnet demagnetises instantly after the switch is off? Will there be presence of residual magnetic forces?
Residual magnetic force does exist In ferromagnetic material. But I cannot say anything quantitative because I have not measured.
@@TheTechnocrat Hey, I have a question, the more about of turns you do, do you also have to increase the voltage of the current?
Nice, but why did you take the pain to wind it manually - just could use a drill or motor and make the coil
Those weights look just like my grinder in high school.
How much wire is required and is it possible from 6 volt battery please reply as soon as possible because tomorrow is my practical.
Is the steel bar in the center needed, or could I use a pipe or nothing at all? Was it just to make winding easier?
fatdoggo 1212 you need some sort of iron core for an electromagnet to function.
@@roidsaccounts9565 thank you. I'm planning on making a coil gun. Would a steel bullet work?
If you find an E-I core transformer, you can easily make an E core extremely powerful (force-ful) electromagnet. ;)
I made one with a microwave transformer and it can lift me and my dad or more precise 120kg
How long is the wire ??
Very useful content. Did you observe any heating effect on the coil.?
Since I used MS iron core, I found some heating after some time.

hi bro I choose the same concept in my final year mechanical project

Hi, I am a power plant engineer. Making videos such as this is a good thing to increase knowledge. But let me add some safety inputs, you need to ensure before working in any system to disconnect first the energy supply (e.g. battery) regardless if the system switch/breaker is open. Even if it is very obvious, always consider electrical system as live ones. The 12V DC does not that give you good shock, but for some it will hurt, but still, regardless of voltage and current of the supply (if mechanical, pressure, etc.), be safe always. Connect power supply after what you are doing, especially in industrial and power field, there LOTO and verification with partners will take effect. Practice of safety starts from small things you are doing.
Thank you very much for your inputs and suggestions. Will implement in future videos. And I have also learning many safety practices working as a instrumentation engineer now. I was a student back then.
Thank you.

Good advice. Can I have your advice on a solenoid project... sabcatne1234@gmail.com
Thanks .And i have a question. Can it lift an aluminum or a tin can?
No, it works only on ferromagnetic materials
Nice Good Job
SUPER AMAZING ELECTROMGNET AND STRONG
if i change the power cords around would that make the magnet repels instead of attract
LiamLlamaGaming ..yeah... it will change the pole.....but it has effect only on permanent magnet ....not on iron bar
Yes
But not affect the magnetism
@ chase kendig.. magnetic flux . lines of force NEVER cross, lines of force are CONTINUOUS, lines of force ALWAYS form individual CLISED LOOPS around the magnet ,lines of force have a DEFINITE direction from NORTH to SOUTH , lines of force that are close signify a STRONG mag. field , lines of force that are far apart signify a WEAK mag. field.
Good sir
Ampere?
Ya know its much easier to wrap the iron rod before have with a variable speed hand drill.
This is India man! He probably doesn't have a Milwaukee or Dewalt on hand...but agreed, would be more faster. And tighter wind.
Hi sir ....in a movie (dhoom 2) hritik rosahn maded a electromagnet that can attract metals ...is it possible to make electromagnetic field like that ?
Ankit Minj, it is possible to make very powerful electromagnets that can lift tonnes of metal , but practically it is not possible to make it soo compact as shown in the movie.
omg what a question man,you craked me up
Since when 3.7kg became 5kg
Carl men, I could not find something exactly 5 kg when I shot the video...but it can lift upto 5-5.5 kg . It is important to use a battery or power supply that Can supply enough current.

Can somebody help me? Can magnetic waves or something like be used to cheat in a game of steel tip darts
What is the size of the iron?
would the magnet work if it were to be wired through someone’s arm/hand and would it cause harm to said person?
What are you ploting
What kind of power are you running through this?
Is it not dangerous picking up the whole thing bare hands when those joints are not properly insulated?
Magnet wire is usually insulated with a thin type of glass. Also I dont think he is using that much power to be anything to worry about
6 or 12 volts is no shock hazard. But 600 volt spikes are generated when switching the magnet off. Unpleasant but not dangerous...
heres an idea. get an iron rod about 2 inches longer than needed. rol paper put ends on and leave extra length on on side. then when you wind the the (magnet wire) coated copper wire just hook it up to a cordless drill. those 900 wont be so hard. just estimate the turns with the example he shows
Cool man
can you make a solenoid that can change moterbike gear ?
Can u tell magnetic field strength
Does this work with three AA batteries instead if the big boy you have?
It will work. But the power might be less.
What is the rating of the battery
Cool. But you need to invest in a lighter.
Great

How many grams is your iron alone?
Hi Thanks for your really useful video, Could you please let me know your valuable thought on the below sentence? Thanks
"How we can make an electromagnet as strong as possible? I am assuming we should increase the number of winding, wind the magnetic wires in a shorter length, and increase the current! Then my question is that what possible options do we have to increase the current? I am saying a couple, please complete my saying for a more complete solution... For increasing the current, we can use higher voltage power supply? (Does an AC or DC power supply matter in this regard?) decrease the magnet wire diameter, decrease the total length of the magnet wires, correct? "
Your sentences are right.
1. Increase the number of turns in a shorter core.
2. Increase the current through the coil by increasing the supply voltage. Care to be taken not to exceed the rated current of the wire. AC or DC doesn't matter unless you are using it on the permanent magnet.
3. The impedance of the coil also affects the current, in turn affecting the strength.
Ohm's law, electromagnet formula should answer all your questions.

Hyyy plz tell me if i apply 220 ac volts than which gauge of wire i have to take or how many rotation of wire
