  • How Italy's Most Beautiful City Was DESTROYED And Is Now INCREDIBLY Famous!
You might think the worst part of when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. was how quickly Pompeii got
destroyed. But, even though that was sad, there were even worse things about it.
Because two festivals were happening in the town simultaneously, the tragedy at Pompeii ended up much worse
than it should have been. The Pompeians were having a big celebration for the emperor Augustus, who had become a god and had a month named after him. The streets of Pompeii were crowded with celebrations, like music, fortune-telling, plays, and sports. Many performers and athletes from other places came to join the event, along with visitors and tourists.
We can't say precisely how many extra people were in the town when it got destroyed, but more lives were lost than
if the eruption had happened a month later. What's worse, the day before the eruption was Vulcanalia, the festival of
the god Vulcan, the god of fire and volcanoes.
