Timelapse shows M42 bridge demolition by HS2 contractors

  • Contractors working for HS2 have removed a 4,000 tonne bridge over the M42 to make way for the construction of the new high speed line across the motorway near the Interchange Station construction site in Solihull.
    A team of 20 demolition experts from Solihull-based firm Armac, working on behalf of HS2’s main works contractor in the Midlands, Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV), carried out the demolition in just 16 hours.
    The operation was coordinated in conjunction with National Highways, who were able to open the motorway section between Junctions 6 and 7 on Sunday at midnight, which was 5 hours earlier than planned, reducing disruption to road users.
    Starting at 07.00 on Saturday 10 February, the demolition team used a 100 tonne excavator and a further seven 50 tonne demolition excavators to complete the operation, supplemented by numerous breaker and cruncher attachments. Six articulated dumper trucks transported the excavated material to a local stockpile where it will be crushed and reused on HS2’s haul roads and work sites.
    Once the bridge was demolished at around 15.00 on Saturday , the debris was removed, the matting taken away, carriageway cleaned, and central reservation and verge restraint systems reinstated, ready for the motorway to be re-opened at midnight on Sunday 11 February.
    It is the second of two 4,000 tonne bridges in close proximity over the M42 which needed to be demolished so HS2 can build a new twin box structure, which will carry the high speed line over the motorway in the future. The operation by Armac to demolish the first bridge in August last year was delivered 14 hours ahead of schedule.

    I do think that was impressive to be able to completely close the motorway in both directions (for Health & Safety reasons), then demolish the old bridge then clear all the rubble away and clean the motorway & reopen it for motorists.
    All of that done in just over half a day is very good.
    These people are clearly very well experienced in demolition work.
    Most importantly is that the work has to be done properly & fully first time to avoid closing the motorway for the second time to finish the job.
    Keeps the traffic disruption to a minimum.
    It looks like they have done it right first time.

      Except its from Euston to the north of avoiding Birmingham or to Birmingham if you need to go there.

      And that is why I disagreed on a well informed basis. And its a bit rich your accusing me of 'trolling' when you are all over HS2 videos and I have made just one reply.

      @@1chish Ok the facts 1. HS2 is London to Birmingham only! 2. If the HS2 rolling stock is diagrammed North of Birmingham it will be slower than existing stock as it lacks the Pendelino tilting mechanism. 3. Euston may well be completed if Private capital allows - we will see. Additionally re-starting the cancelled Northern sections will be difficult as the Gov seems to be implementing a scorched earth policy, and of course controlling cost estimates has, so far, been impossible!!

    What’s the point of HS2 when, as usual, the North is cut off. There is literally no point! 😡

      Yep, they should have cancelled birmingham tunnels and stations and run it up to manchester 1st. This poncy new station is 15 mins walk from birmingham newstreet, for a 10 minute saving. I bet they will call it investment outside london too!

      How is the North 'cut off'? Trains will still go to Manchester and Scotland but avoid Birmingham. the new trains will run on both HS2 and the legacy routes replacing the Pendolinos.
      Still faster than now.

      errr ... no. High speed railways have to go in mostly straight lines. And the bridges were due for demolition anyway as they were built in 1976.

      Why are you complaining?
      You succeeded, you got tens of billions wasted and it was all cancelled.
      Oh wait, you want to waste even more of our money, this section wasn't cancelled because it would have cost more to cancel than to just get it finished.
      Now I understand why you still oppose it, you want to waste as much taxpayer money as possible.

      What would you propose they do to help increase capacity within the transport industry? You're clearly highly educated, have strong opinions, and know a better alternative than a new railway to increase overall capacity, and reduce pressure on existing lines.

      the destruction of ancient woodland is actually quite small, a tiny fraction of what is consumed by suburban sprawl and road building projects, 2 things that a high speed rail line would help to curtail, also 65 billion is barely any to a government, especially due to money being free to governments like the UK who can both print their own money and spend on debt forever, the money not spent building the important part of the route north is not going to go to anything else, it's not being saved because the government never had that money sitting in a room somewhere, it was being conjured from thin air for HS2 and now will just never exist at all, nothing has been gained by canceling the project, nothing will be gained by canceling more, only lost, and now with the northern legs being canceled it has become the very London facing project the Tories initially bemoaned it being when it wasn't, and have now cut enough away for it to become, how about before you start commenting on the first large scale desperately needed public infrastructure the UK has seen in about a century you actually learn the reality of the project, go listen to the people who have actually worked on it and know what construction of projects like this are actually like because they've worked on them, people like @GarethDennisTV who has done several lovely podcast episodes on this very topic where he goes over and systematically disproves every single point you just made

      @@haxorouse3265 politically you may be correct but I’m looking at the bigger picture the human race is on burn out on a dying planet we are vastly over populated it’s estimated uk population within the next two decades is over 100 million these are the facts I look at rather than a short term rail fix
      What will be left for the next generation
      Not a lot it seems

      I see that your picture is that of a canal barge. I reckon there were plenty people with your opinion when the canal network was being dug and a few trees & small woods had to be cut down also and local communities inconvenienced for a period of time. However, the construction had a profound positive effect on the economy of Britain and we still benefit from it today, two centuries later.
