Some sad news about Santa Fe beans- it's been hard to find them recently and I sent an email to check when they might be available again, and I learned of the passing of the owner, Grant Bassett. By all accounts he was a great guy and pillar of his community and it's a terrible loss for his family. His wife, Mary Ann, explained that they are planning on ramping back up, but have no eta on online availability.
If you're like me and have been missing santa Fe beans a lot over the year or two, I urge that you're patient and support the company when they do get back on their feet!

This looks 100% vegan and almost what I would pack. My only concern is your lack of micronutrients, I suggest tossing in some nutritional yeast into your rice packets (flavor, B12, iron, etc) and iodized salt (or occasionally eat some dry seaweed snacks). Sure you could take a multi-vitamin but that tangy yeasty flavor works so well with rice dishes.
I was thinking of doing cajun rice packets like jambalaya and I'm probably going to use your idea of refried beans as a test run. Thanks and good luck on the trail!

I buy olive oil in bulk, and then buy a 6 pack of tiny (I think 8oz) apple juice bottles for kids. Drink the juice, clean the bottles, and then repackage the olive oil in those bottles. They have never leaked on me which is nice, and they're small enough where I don't feel like I'm carrying too much for any given stretch of trail.

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  2 роки тому +3

And there lies one of the biggest risks of sending yourself boxes! If you do quit it would be a big waste of time and money. So although I do them, and like them, I still don't like to recommend them to others unless it's necessary (like in washington on this trail.) If you do quit tho, to answer your question... you could have the business return the package to sender, you could tell them to give it to another hiker, or you could manually go pick the packages up yourself.

If I find that I didn't pack enough in my usps I can always add and supplement with whatever I can scrounge up at the business I sent my package to, as there is usually a hiker box.

Also, I just wanted to mention that most of Nuun is the citric acid and sodium bicarbonate to make your drink fizzy (talk about luxury). They are what 6 grams each plus the container? IMHO, I personally don’t think they are worth it unless you’re looking for that effervescent experience. Can do flavor drops like Mio to cover up funky water. What I would recommend is 1/4 tsp of good sea or Himalayan salt, 1 pack / 2 tabs of Medi-Lyte electrolyte replenisher (cheap on Amazon) for the calcium, potassium, and magnesium, and possibly some honey for the carbs (30-60 grams per hour when pushing). I’m bringing straight up salt and a honey bear. 🧂 🍯

You'll probably want a package there, but I have been there before and unless somethings changed there is a gas station and convenience store. Not a great resupply but I'm ok with that. Hope to see you out there!

Have you ever considered adding electrolytes to your bean mixture in addition to the beverages?

I haven't but will often just drink some at the end of the day. I have on the other hand in the past added like extra micro nutrient supplements to them. I don't do that anymore though

Would like to see ya do the Allegheny Trail next year. Last spring I did a 98 mile section of it and planning on doing another chunk of it this year. It's awesome. I loved you food ideas. I have to eat gluten free and just about everything you had fit.

Do you take a vitamin? It seems like the missing macros might be detrimental over time?

I have taken vitamins on some hikes, just forgot to pack some on this one. Haven't personally noticed a difference, but I'm also not being tested in a lab or anything which would be cool

Gonna second the SkurkaBean recipe for anyone wondering. I was buying Backpacker's Pantry for a while and it wasn't even the cost that made me switch, it was indigestion. I had a couple nights after eating Backpacker's Pantry where I would wake up at like 2am with a stomach ache. The SkurkaBeans are notorious for making people gassy but my body can at least break it down unlike some of the $8 stomach bombs I used to eat.

Before skurka it was quite the popular meal among hikers like scott williamson! Andrew was the one to make it mainstream though

Hi Jupiter. Excellent video, thank you!. I have heard that Tuolumne Meadows is closed this year for construction. I see you have a box sent there. I am hiking through there in late August, and curious if you have heard anything about Tuolumne meadows closures? Good luck on your hike, will be folling you on UA-cam. Thanx - Ray

I just finished the AZT last month and sent myself 4 boxes with food I have always eaten and enjoyed. By the second box, I tossed them in the hiker boxes with the exception of my dinners. I ended up buying all of my resupply food because I just didn't want to eat a single thing I shipped. I think on future thru hikes, I will only ship dinners because I have eaten them for years and always enjoy them. Interestingly enough, they are beans, rice salsa and chicken which I cook and dehydrate at home.

I liked the nature valley fig bars, too. , Justin's nutbutters are great. I've found that I needed something like a sandwich to fill up so I found english muffins smooth well and are pretty light. ... with Justin's filled me up. A meal I made to fill me up was I got bunch of mixed dried organic mushrooms from Costco and blended them, then had, freeze-dried white onions, garlic powder, salt, nutritional yeast, textured soy protein. I also ordered cashew milk powder from znatural foods to make it creamy... (this is also a nice creamer for coffee or tea) This was added to noodles, couscous.... sometimes dill or cumin, etc to change it up a little. I also had flaked beans and made various meals with those. Pre making bags of nut varieties and cranberries or raisins are really satisfying. It's best to chew them to a paste to extract all the nutrients. I often will start with apples cucumbers and will eat those on the first day or so to offset carrying water. Actually really hydrating.
