  • This one's for all you hardcore music nerds out there:
So there's this really cool spot in the second act of Lulu -- a spot that's basically the fulcrum of the entire opera -- where Berg writes a 3 minute sequence that's an exact musical palindrome. At around 90 seconds, there's a solo piano gliss upward which pauses at the midpoint, and then comes right back down. From that point onward, every single pitch and rhythm is played in exact reverse for another 90 seconds.
What's cooler than Berg's palindrome? One click of some audio software, and the entire palindrome sequence itself can be played backwards! All of the notes and pitches are identical both ways -- the only things that differ are the attacks and dynamic envelopes! SUPER DOUBLE PALINDROME! (And one of the only musical examples I know of that demonstrates this phenomenon.)
I made a short video that couples the audio with a score-walk-through. Hear it for yourself!

BRILLIANT! I have been fascinated with Lulu's brilliant orchestral writing as well as its vocal brilliance for DECADES

If it sounds atonal forwards, it does backwards too
