Your 101s are so clear!!! Thank you so much, not only for this, but also for take your time and modulate your voice, so those, like me, who aren't english native speakers, can understand and get completely your explanations!!!
Marc, loving these videos! I’m also in the middle of Basics to Badass, so these are so supplemental. Hoping to see a video soon on duplication and diversity!
Hi Marc, the pipcount in the last position is 135 both after 55. Now you have to make a new video to make the principle more clear, hehe! AND you have to explain if this huge wreckingball with fire is a custom-built model ... ;-)
You are right! Marc didn't quite shuffle the White checkers well enough at the last position. The idea was, that Black was still supposed to be behind in the race after the move with 55, and should therefore stay back and maximize contact.
@@BackgammonGalaxy Yes, the idea is very clear of course. The problem is that the runningmove is not "a blunder" like stated in the video. Don't get me wrong, i like the video but personally would invest 5 more minutes to demonstrate the principle as clear as possible.
Glad to see you're using the Neptune board, Marc! I dare say that you could actually make these instructional videos even a bit longer and more involved. Four minutes goes pretty quick when you're talking about backgammon theory and strategy. I'd watch an additional number of minutes if you went into more detail about theory and/or strategy. Either way, keep these videos coming, they're very helpful for growing the game!
Noted! But this is the basics series, it's supposed be simple and just one little concept at a time, so the beginner's can follow. However, we have more advanced videos as well, for instance did you see the video we just did analyzing a holdinggame from Magriel's book? :)
@@BackgammonGalaxy - Yes, the Magriel analysis is excellent. Thanks for the reply. My initial point is that I think even beginners could benefit from a little more content in this short lessons, but they are a good resource either way. Thanks!
You are progressing to fast for beginners! Start with the basics. What does the word PIP mean? Well, pips are the little dots on the side of each DIE. There are, as we know, 21 pips on each die. This concept is then extended to signify a measure of length the game of backgammon. Another point you must stress is that being DOWN (in pips) is actually GOOD. The words LEADING and TRAILING are better.
Wow, I didn't think anyone other than me objected to the racing words: up/down, ahead/behind. I think leading/trailing are just as confusing -- if you are leading in the pip count, you are going to be losing the race. How about "Billy's pip count was higher." Now we know Billy is losing. I vote for higher/lower.
Yes, there is a chapter in From Basics to Badass, which teaches you all the tricks, on how GMs like Marc can count pip difference in a matter of seconds.

Thank you for your kind feedback :-)
I love how this series is getting more technical as it goes on. Well done!
Thanks Nicholas, we have many more to come!
Great stuff as always Mark, thank you! And, for me at least, it would be even more enjoyable without the distraction of background music.

Great series of videos especially for me as I'm a total rookie. Peace from France :)
Great! "When ahead in the race - THEN RACE!"
@@BackgammonGalaxy Which is a great thing to keep in mind. Sometimes, I tend to foolishly hit instead of running :)

Yes I agree excellent videos, but more minutes and and also more examples would be great!!

Great stuff as always Marc. You rock. Happy Holidays.
Wow, that was some good advice.
Well done.
Thanks Meeko!

Any easy method out there to mentally calculate the pips or the difference when playing?

As a rough guide, how far do you need to be ahead in the pip count before you decide to race?
great for newbies like me
Hi Marc. Statistically speaking, what is the most mis-played double?
My money is on double 4
taking the re-cube to 4 instead of passing :)
@@ryanmoon05 - I think you may be correct ryan.
Double 2
It's cool board.
It's the Galaxy Neptune Board. There was only produced 50, and they were sold out in a week. We are preparing now for the 2021 Galaxy board!
Wow,It is amazing! But I'm sure it's something I can't buy.
