The om314 has no glow plugs, it's a direct injection diesel. So you can 'safely' use ether on this diesel, too! I subscribed to your channel, I just started renovating a 1976 608d.

Working on modern American diesels and VWs I just assumed all diesels has glow plugs or a heater grid. Now I know that these old beast didn’t have the option.
I have the pilot start system but will need to find some ether cans for it or convert it to a more available ether system.
I may also add a heating grid is I run into issues.
      Thanks for watching

Just place the key into the ignition and press the starter button to start. Turning the key operates the headlights - position 1 = parking lights, position 2 = headlights. Weird I know. There are 2 x 80amp fuses in the starter solenoid so check those too. Have fun. Watching the series with interest.

Thanks Simon. The manuals from the FB group have helped a lot also.

I also forgot to mention the two 80amp fuses have been replaced with fusible link wire instead. If I replace the solenoid it should come with new fuses otherwise I will probably replace the fusible link with an appropriate fuse.

Whough, this is SO cool, - we had an O309 for 8 years, and every step you take her, is precious to us! Keep it up, we long for "Part II"!!

Did you travel with yours? Why did you part ways with it?

@@ThePracticalMechanic We bought it for travelling from the south-west coast of Norway to the north of Norway every summer for 8 years: We have 10 children, 6 sons- and daughters-in-law's and (at that time) 9 grandchildren, and some of them wanted to go with us. As the children grew, and used their own cars, drove other places and came for shorter visits in the north, we eventually came to the point where only my wife, I and our youngest son took the trip together, and then it was too expensive: 1300 km. each way, appr. 1,65 liters pr. ten km., lots of toll booths along the way and one ferry from the coast to the island we visited. I addition, we had to take it through an expensive EU-control each & every year, and as that was a too big van (6,95 m. long, 2,45 m. broad) to use for other transportation, we simply had to let it go. But what a dream come true to use it! 6-cyl. engine, 130 hp and really fast and utterly easy to drive in all ways!

you didn't find this bus Chad, it found you...exactly what it needed:)

I just hope it didn't find me just so it could haunt me. It should be a fun project that will require me to think different ways than the normal vehicles I work on.

man this is totally taking me back to a 1942 ford flat head v8 military vehicle (Bren carrier) that we overhauled. It sat outside in the Canadian winter from 1985 to 2010 until we overhauled it. I found an original Canadian ford military service manual and long story short we brought this vehicle from death back to parade show quality. Chad this type of work you're doing is, in my opinion, what "it's" all about. I can't wait to follow along! The best part about the Germans is that they took great notes. I bet there's a manual for this truck that'll have the info you need... (you speak German no?!)

I made myself a rule that I wouldn’t purchase if the body was rusted out. I got lucky that there is very little rust.

Roadworthy is priority for this summer. If we have time then interior work will be next.

That is a Series/Parallel switch. Was common on older trucks. Stater/Alternator shop should be able to help you if needed.

Thanks. Not something I’m used to seeing in the automotive field for sure. I did find some new ones on eBay. Around $300 for the original part number but I think it would be wise to replace it before it leaves me stranded. The American/Delphi version is cheaper but not a direct fit by any means. In the next video I’ll take it apart to show the inner workings.

Position 2 with the kex and startbutton. There is Nothing to glow;) just straight to Start.

Position 1 turns on my park lights and position 2 turned on the head lights. I didn’t look at the diagram to see what else was powered up. All the dash lights light up as soon as the key is inserted into the ignition. We have some fuel issues to deal with as well.

You have to undo slightly the bleed screw first on the main injection pump 10mm nut around the front side of pump 👍

I can't believe I missed this video. I knew you purchased the bus and I was waiting for some videos. Sorry it didn't start but since this is a year old maybe you have it running by now? Are you camping yet?

Some starter relay stuff: When you hit the start button, the ignition switch applies + 12V to terminal 50. The relay coil in the battery switch is connected between 50 and 31 (before one of the fuses, bottom I think). When the relay pulls the contact between 30 and 31a is closed. Now, the batteries are connected in series and there is +24 V running the starter.

When you have the key in left position I think light should be off, and when you turn it right it is parking light and far right should be driving light 👍

Thanks for the tip, you are correct. I’ve never seen a key for a headlight system. Inserting the key seem to turn everything on so I will have to remember to remove the key when parked.

We have only one bus right now in our country and its in super condition. Imagine only one for the whole country. Two engine version, one for AC.

This one originally had a second alternator to run a rooftop air conditioning unit. It was originally used as an hotel shuttle in Denver from what the previous owner told me.

Hi Chad shout out to Diagnose Dan he will have a wiring diagram for that if not i could find you one they used to be very common here in the UK Arthur.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  3 роки тому

I managed to find one in a Facebook group dedicated to the o309 and 508. Surprisingly the wiring diagram is in the operators manual as well as a bunch of other mechanical information. I guess operators we expected to know how a vehicle works back in the day.
