That is a fair point. For UA-cam and most amateur drone pilots the Mavic Mini will be an amazing option. The biggest differences are the quality of the footage (RAW+4K) and wind resistance? You know that battery is going down fast with with any kind of wind.
I think you are all missing the point! The mavic mini fits in the market perfectly! it's not aimed at professional photographers they already have drones for that. it's aimed toward people who just want a very portable easy to use drone to take pictures and videos and share them to social media ie Facebook & Instagram, there is no need for it to take 4k videos as 90% of the footage will only be viewed on mobile phones. Why would somebody buy a drone that's 4 times the price of the mini 4 times the size and 4 times the weight just to have a drone that they are just going to take pictures and videos that the have no idea how to edit etc. You can tell this with how they have designed the new dji fly app where you can upload the footage directly from your phone. There is a massive gap in the market for a drone like this and dji will sell millions of these units. FACT

Also if you want the 30 minutes flight time, that battery will take the weight over 250g, even if you use the small battery (only 18 min flight time) if you add an sd card and a sticker you are over weight. If you add the prop guards, then you're over weight. Also, being so small visual line of sight will be around 200m, a useless product aimed at gathering money for DJI and nothing else
@@SouthpawBluesman No that is not true, the small battery makes it 199 grams which is only made for Japan. It has 1100 mAh. Europe and US come with the bigger battery which lasts for 30 minutes, it makes it 249 grams.

Spots on Alex.....you just mentioned all the relevant points. I think most people who fly drones are just hobbyist with little intention of commercializing the video footages or photos they capture.
For traveling, I agree smaller is better, but I think Mavic Mini does not have crash avoiding sensors like Mavic air (front and back). I gave up on DJI since they forced firmware upgrade on my P4 (won't let me use DJI app unless I update firmware), and failed ruing the firmware update. DJI said I have to pay to fix the failed firmware - I only flew 5x and the P4 was working fine until forced firmware update that failed.

Idk about you but I'll fly both! Air for those better quality vids, storage and megabits, while the mini is for those tight corners and tight spaced shots with no regulation restrictions to fly.
In the U.S if you’re Part 107 Certified you have to register all your UAV anyway. Also wether you fly for a hobby or professionally you have to follow all of the same FAA regulations a Mavic Air would except Hobbiest save $5 not having to register the Mini. But...I think this drone is MUCH better for Canadians who now have the strictest rules

I'll tell you what: I have already ordered the Mavic Air Combo today, a few moments in fact before watching your video comparison between it and the Mavic Mini. In fact, when I started watching your comparison video, I was afraid to have been made the wrong choice by ordering the Mavic Air. However, I apparently haven't, and that's because the Air is the better drone in every category except the flight time and the weight. More importantly, with the Air you get more sensors preventing you from crashing, a higher video resolution and quality, a better slo-mo, and so on. Anyway, thank you a lot for making me confident with my purchase, and keep up the good work!

100mbps @ 4k vs 40mbps @ 2.7k is a lot. The youtube argument is not the best because if something is captured in native in higher quality, when its compressed in youtube its still better. Air does raw photos too, not sure if mini does. Most people even pros deply their videos via youtube. You generally need higher quality bit rate in drones to capture things like trees, grass, foliage, and not having a 4k device going into 2020 is not good. To put this into perspective, go pro 3+ from 6+ years I had on my phantom 2 was doing 2.7k at 60 MBPS. So my phantom 2 drone from 2013 would get better video than you guys will get in 2020? It still a great drone and plenty good enough for a lot of people, but when you consider the images and videos you capture could last a life time, don't you want to make sure that you're actually capturing with a decent quality? I would rather buy a second hand mavic air. I been using my spark for 2 years and its been flawless. DJI make good drones these days. Don't be afraid of buying a good second hand one. Its great drone, but at this stage in my drone life, I won't touch anything less than 100mbps.

The mini price and quality video is great for personal use, if you have a good drone already ie Anafi the mavic mini is great to just run with all over town it’s not for pros it’s the step up from the spark users and the spark image looked great...I think it’s a winner I have the Tello I want to replace it as my new small drone.

What about the flying distance? I heard somewhere that the mavic mini has problems with flying over 30m in big cities with a lot of wifi interruptions. Is it true? If positive, that is a big problem in my case...
pietrek_ bwa that’s a tricky question because if you mean flying around and in between high rises that are densely stacked, that’s different than flying around cities with a lot of wifi but has lower buildings. Occusync will always be better than wifi and neither the air nor mini have occusync so I expect equal performance from them. In Atlanta I have gotten up to a mile out in the city without disconnecting and that is straight out above trees and buildings. I don’t typically find the need to fly further away. The mavic air is better than the mini. Hence the price difference. But it’s photos are slightly less sharp than the mavic one. If you plan to fly mostly in and around cities I would recommend either the mavic 1 or mavic 2 zoom. I would opt for the first mavic because it has portrait mode which is really good for photos of buildings. Just my 2 cents
Good comparison, but the mavic air belong the best for it's category ( for professionals it's a good size alternative and for entertainment it's the best device ) there is no debate about.
Seriously considering getting the Mini as an upgrade from my Spark. The battery life and price are what does it. $800AUD for the Mini as compared to $1600AUD for the Air is a big deal for me, and I'm only going to be using it for UA-cam. And half an hour battery life? Definitely worth it.
If I have a phone that doesnt have cellular service but through wifi I am able to download the app and then go outside to fly the drone without any connection from the phone but to use a screen for the drone, WILL IT STILL WORK, WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO SEE THROUGH THE CAMERA ON THE DRONE AND ALL INDICATORS????? I really want to by the DJI mini but I am not a cellphone user anymore. I do have an old phone sitting around that does connect to the wifi in my house

Mavic air camera more cinematic than mini, and mavic air has active track features but mini has not any active track features ..sports mode on mavic mini is not available....
The Mavic Mini is clearly the worst drone with it actually comes to picture quality. Drones are typically used for one thing... Pictures/Videos. You could give me a US Military Jet to fly but if you load it with a gopro ver 1 it become pointless.

This is spot on. I have a Mavic Air and I’ve been tempted before to look at other options after my history of the OG Phantom, Phantom 2, Mavic Pro etc but I’ve never been disappointed with the footage or experience on my Air.
There should not be the question of quality on photos and video on Air. The mini is for casual users to share media to app like fb, insta and easy to carry and also 249g means users are not required to register under aviation law.
I have my DJI Mavic Mini already almost 1 week but cant fly it because the drone needs to be activated via DJI FLY app so i can used with the controller also, the thing is that the QR codes that the manuals have to download the app, does not works and send me to the DJI store.so i have to wait till the 11th.Maybe would you be kind and share a cipy of the beta app you have in hand so i can at lease test it to see if is working until the final one comes to be available for download? Another question, does you know if flight plan will be part of the app? Thanks.
Who needs RAW format? Most of people don't even know what is that! Mini was designed for general people like me, who like to take unprofessional videos like on the phones. If RAW is so important thing for you, just buy Mavic 2 Pro. I already own M2P, but I don't use it for editing and professional purpose, so I never use even 4k resolution, not to mention RAW

Well, less weight doesn't mean it's better as it can't resist stronger winds like the mavic air does (Would be cool to test it, just be careful if you will) Also in most of the world there's a limit on KG, barely any countries that limit you on grams. Price is obvious, mavic mini has less stuff compared to the air It's kinda like comparing a 5KG washing machine to a 10KG one Both of these drones have been made for completely different audiences In the end like you've said it's the user's choice to decide, it's just unfair that they both got 8-8, it's like the video was made to make the mavic mini look better, but it has major downsides, which people might not understand if they get the mini over the air or the air over the mini.
Buying .a used drone is possibly the dumbest purchase one could make. People crash these things til they fly like a drunken stunt plane, then toss them up on Ebay. You could get a certified refurbished one, but that's only like $100 off.
Maybe not used, but refurbished. I got my Mavic Air Fly More in September "Open Box" (even better deal than refurbished) for $770. Three batteries, four battery charger, travel bag - everything. It only had 25 minutes of total flight time. When they come out with the Mavic Air 2, I only hope to sell it for at least $450 used and upgrade.

Yeah, #1, if it can’t do 4K, that’s an automatic no for anyone who wants to use this even semi-professionally. I shoot mostly in 4K and am requested to shoot in 4K. And the higher MBPS quality is huge. Only get this drone if you are a hobbyist or for personal use. It still looks great, but no 4K is a deal breaker.
I never understood the success of the air. Maybe if it had come out before the mp but for about the same price you get a longer flight time, much better connectivity and range and no irritating prop noise. The mini is everything the spark should have been. It's obvious DJI held back some of the features so they wouldn't cannibalize their more expensive drone sales.
You didnt give a point for Air for having more shooting modes. And another for active tracking. And another for actual manual settings for video which is a huge deal! The mavic mini only has auto shooting for video. No way to adjust iso or any other manual settings. The mini should get a point for noise because it is quieter although there are some amazing quieter blades you can buy for the air also. It comes down to budget. For the price the mini is better than the spark. But its nowhere near as good as the Air. Its miles ahead. If you have the cash go for the Air all day

Forgot to mention sound. The mini is one of DJI's quietest drones vs. The air being one of their loudest.

The youtube argument is not the best because if something is captured in native in higher quality, when its compressed in youtube its still better.
Air does raw photos too, not sure if mini does. Most people even pros deply their videos via youtube.
You generally need higher quality bit rate in drones to capture things like trees, grass, foliage, and not having a 4k device going into 2020 is not good.
To put this into perspective, go pro 3+ from 6+ years I had on my phantom 2 was doing 2.7k at 60 MBPS. So my phantom 2 drone from 2013 would get better video than you guys will get in 2020?
It still a great drone and plenty good enough for a lot of people, but when you consider the images and videos you capture could last a life time, don't you want to make sure that you're actually capturing with a decent quality?
I would rather buy a second hand mavic air. I been using my spark for 2 years and its been flawless. DJI make good drones these days.

Its great drone, but at this stage in my drone life, I won't touch anything less than 100mbps.

The mini price and quality video is great for personal use, if you have a good drone already ie Anafi the mavic mini is great to just run with all over town it’s not for pros it’s the step up from the spark users and the spark image looked great...I think it’s a winner I have the Tello I want to replace it as my new small drone.

What about the flying distance? I heard somewhere that the mavic mini has problems with flying over 30m in big cities with a lot of wifi interruptions. Is it true? If positive, that is a big problem in my case...
pietrek_ bwa this only happens if you leave the connection frequency in auto. If you select a channel manually, at least for me, it goes away

pietrek_ bwa that’s a tricky question because if you mean flying around and in between high rises that are densely stacked, that’s different than flying around cities with a lot of wifi but has lower buildings.
Occusync will always be better than wifi and neither the air nor mini have occusync so I expect equal performance from them.
In Atlanta I have gotten up to a mile out in the city without disconnecting and that is straight out above trees and buildings. I don’t typically find the need to fly further away.
The mavic air is better than the mini. Hence the price difference. But it’s photos are slightly less sharp than the mavic one. If you plan to fly mostly in and around cities I would recommend either the mavic 1 or mavic 2 zoom. I would opt for the first mavic because it has portrait mode which is really good for photos of buildings. Just my 2 cents
Good comparison, but the mavic air belong the best for it's category ( for professionals it's a good size alternative and for entertainment it's the best device ) there is no debate about.
Seriously considering getting the Mini as an upgrade from my Spark. The battery life and price are what does it. $800AUD for the Mini as compared to $1600AUD for the Air is a big deal for me, and I'm only going to be using it for UA-cam. And half an hour battery life? Definitely worth it.
If I have a phone that doesnt have cellular service but through wifi I am able to download the app and then go outside to fly the drone without any connection from the phone but to use a screen for the drone, WILL IT STILL WORK, WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO SEE THROUGH THE CAMERA ON THE DRONE AND ALL INDICATORS?????

Mavic mini is the best drone avery days use.no one know the picture 2k or 4k it look like aven you ask professional photo grapher dint know which ones is the photo is 2k or 4k unless if you tell them very less people have 4k digital screen in the phone or computers camera. 4k is havy fail need to be done on it alot of work need to be done on 4k picture and fail setting.
How about real life flight time and not a specs sheet ??

Mavic air camera more cinematic than mini, and mavic air has active track features but mini has not any active track features ..sports mode on mavic mini is not available....
The Mavic Mini is clearly the worst drone with it actually comes to picture quality. Drones are typically used for one thing... Pictures/Videos. You could give me a US Military Jet to fly but if you load it with a gopro ver 1 it become pointless.

This is spot on. I have a Mavic Air and I’ve been tempted before to look at other options after my history of the OG Phantom, Phantom 2, Mavic Pro etc but I’ve never been disappointed with the footage or experience on my Air.
There should not be the question of quality on photos and video on Air. The mini is for casual users to share media to app like fb, insta and easy to carry and also 249g means users are not required to register under aviation law.
Air over double the price of the mini.. So might as well compare a rolls Royce to a mini

I have my DJI Mavic Mini already almost 1 week but cant fly it because the drone needs to be activated via DJI FLY app so i can used with the controller also, the thing is that the QR codes that the manuals have to download the app, does not works and send me to the DJI store.so i have to wait till the 11th.Maybe would you be kind and share a cipy of the beta app you have in hand so i can at lease test it to see if is working until the final one comes to be available for download? Another question, does you know if flight plan will be part of the app? Thanks.
Who needs RAW format? Most of people don't even know what is that! Mini was designed for general people like me, who like to take unprofessional videos like on the phones. If RAW is so important thing for you, just buy Mavic 2 Pro. I already own M2P, but I don't use it for editing and professional purpose, so I never use even 4k resolution, not to mention RAW

Well, less weight doesn't mean it's better as it can't resist stronger winds like the mavic air does (Would be cool to test it, just be careful if you will)
Also in most of the world there's a limit on KG, barely any countries that limit you on grams. Price is obvious, mavic mini has less stuff compared to the air
It's kinda like comparing a 5KG washing machine to a 10KG one
Both of these drones have been made for completely different audiences
In the end like you've said it's the user's choice to decide, it's just unfair that they both got 8-8, it's like the video was made to make the mavic mini look better, but it has major downsides, which people might not understand if they get the mini over the air or the air over the mini.

Maybe not used, but refurbished. I got my Mavic Air Fly More in September "Open Box" (even better deal than refurbished) for $770. Three batteries, four battery charger, travel bag - everything. It only had 25 minutes of total flight time. When they come out with the Mavic Air 2, I only hope to sell it for at least $450 used and upgrade.

Yeah, #1, if it can’t do 4K, that’s an automatic no for anyone who wants to use this even semi-professionally. I shoot mostly in 4K and am requested to shoot in 4K. And the higher MBPS quality is huge. Only get this drone if you are a hobbyist or for personal use. It still looks great, but no 4K is a deal breaker.

I never understood the success of the air. Maybe if it had come out before the mp but for about the same price you get a longer flight time, much better connectivity and range and no irritating prop noise. The mini is everything the spark should have been. It's obvious DJI held back some of the features so they wouldn't cannibalize their more expensive drone sales.
You didnt give a point for Air for having more shooting modes. And another for active tracking. And another for actual manual settings for video which is a huge deal! The mavic mini only has auto shooting for video. No way to adjust iso or any other manual settings. The mini should get a point for noise because it is quieter although there are some amazing quieter blades you can buy for the air also. It comes down to budget. For the price the mini is better than the spark. But its nowhere near as good as the Air. Its miles ahead. If you have the cash go for the Air all day

Will they add manual shutter speed controls to mavic mini? What about nd filters. I shoot in 2.7 k anyways lol its a perfect balance of picture quality and keeping your files sizes smaller.
