My favorite Christmas song performed by my favorite Christmas singer. I had a music class in High School and one of the choir kids asked about how they could improve their jazz phrasing... The teacher literally said, "go buy Nat King Cole album and listen to how Nat structures his words in a song, he'll teach you more than I ever will." Thank you so much for this, Merry Cristmas!
His phrasing. No one sings a rest like Nat King Cole. He almost hums the "ing" on roasting. And he can go from a wide open mouth position to that amazing warm tone.
The longevity of the popularity of this song speaks volumes of its quality and that of Nat's singing. Thank you Nat and thank you Mel Torme, another unique singer. Nat could sing almost anything and make it sound great.
Great song, great singer... I've downloaded a performance of this with him, to play at every christmas, it really brings out the christmas spirit... even in the midst of summer 😃
I learn so much from your analysis of singers past and present. Thank you. The guitarist backing up NKC deserves a shout-out. The bass line walks around with those old school sophisticated chords. Complex and beautiful. Love it!
Nat King Cole has always been my favorite singer. I love old songs, (I’m 66 years young,) and singers, Sinatra, Tony Bennette, Fred Astaire, and Bing Crosby. I even go back to Al Jolson. They were all good for what they sang but I feel Nat could sing anything in any genre. He probably could rap if he was alive. His voice and his interpretation of the song he sang, even in a different language, were always dead on.
As many know, Nat was a jazz virtuoso. When someone starts to sing, that's what the public demands, and that's understandable. George Benson in a similar situation. Singing pays a hell of a lot more!!😊😊😊😊
One of favorite reactors reacting to one of favorite singers of all time....CANNOT get any better than that!!!! Merry Christmas Bethany 🎄! Hope you have amazing time with your family.
I hope you realize that, with each of your videos where you reveal much about a singer that we didn't know, you also reveal more about yourself, as well ... and, put all together, it's a thing of beauty. Merry Christmas, Bethany. 🎄⭐
Agree! I find when watching Bethany's reactions videos, I'm watching her way more than the artists. She cheers me up no matter the genre because her genuine reactions are so heartwarming. Thanks Bethany
Even though the lyrics of this song depict a very different Christmas to what we experience in Australia, since I was a young child, when I first heard this song and was introduced to Nat King Cole, this remains my favourite Christmas Song and I play it regularly throughout the season. You're right, there has never been anybody to compare with Nat King Cole.
the strange thing is, he only became a singer kind of by accident. He was a brilliant pianist appearing with all the greats when he started singing in the background and evolved into a solo vocalist.
Could you imagine someone saying they didn't understand the words when he sings? Never. He sings so clearly. He enunciates. One of my all time favorites too. The song and the singer. Every time I watch one of your videos Bethany I learn something. Ok, I wrote the part above before the video ended; you mentioned the clarity too. Maybe I am learning something. Thanks.
A great way to express MERRY CHRISTMAS. He is my favorite also , although I was alive during most of his popularity. He is quoted as saying he smoked because it mellowed his voice and they led to his early death .Thank You for sharing your love for maybe the voalist of the 20th century!
I don't know if he's my all-time favorite, but he's definitely up near the very top. I was born late 60s, and my childhood was the 70s. My parents would let Christmas albums play all day during the season, and this is one of my favorite songs from then. I try to listen to it every year when I'm feeling nostalgic, and hear Nat's voice gets me a little misty-eyed. Phenomenal voice and musician.
If Nat hadn't been able to sing a note, he would still go down in jazz history as a top pianist and bandleader. But he also happened to be one of the greatest singers in pop history. Dinner For One, Please, James Stardust Autumn Leaves Unforgettable Ramblin' Rose Sweet Lorraine and Nature Boy
Nat King Cole was my mother's favorite singer. So when my father proposed to her, he sang her favorite Nat King Cole song, "Mona Lisa" to her and she had no choice but to accept. My father had a lovely baritone and sang to her often. They would dance in the living room, my father in his work clothes and Mom in her house dress and he would sing in her ear songs like "Unforgettable". I always think of my parents when I hear him. He's like an old family friend.
I agree, Bethany, that Nat's phrasing is superlative. I haven't heard the comparison before, but I think Angelina Jordan has this same ability to tell a story through phrasing. That's why, for both singers, the emotional transfer of their performances is so central. They are so skilled technically that they can focus on phrasing without worrying about vocal pyrotechnics -- and that makes their performances so honest and connected with the narrative they want to express.
NKC brings me to nostalgic tears every Christmas. Thank you for leaving this song for generations to enjoy it. I love you mommy & thank you for making Christmas my favorite holiday 🩷
Thank you for this. I never tire of hearing Nat sing this classic. No one could match him. There were lots of great "crooners" in his time, Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Mel Torme, Andy Williams, and others, but my favorites by far were Nat and Dean Martin. They both had such unique, silky smooth voices that you would recognize in an instant, and I still listen to them today at 67, and always will. I would like you to do an analysis of Dean Martin singing a popular old country and western tune, "I'm So Lonesome, I Could Cry". Many others have covered it, but imho, no one did it better than Dino.
Smoother than silk, velvety soft and warm voice... A timeless song, by a timeless, instantly identifiable song, and the ICON artist.... Thank you for the breakdown of what makes Nat's voice so rich, beautiful... His daughter, Natalie Cole grew up sitting by him playing piano and sitting alongside.. it was responsible for her successful contribution to 70's music.. her jump in music was the classic "This Will Be" and a gorgeous duo of them singing UNFORGETTABLE... thanks to technology, she produces a duo using black and white film.. very moving to see her adoration of this man we will always remember fondly. Hope you were able to spend time with your Family.. that the Holidays were fun... And blessed. Continued SUCCESS with your very top notch reactions... appreciate you much, enjoy your work as much!! Peace 🎉🎊👏🏻🎉👏🏻🎉🎉🙏🏻🙏🏻 Happy New Year!! PEACE!!
Aw, I really enjoyed this video. It is so satisfying to listen to beautiful music with someone who appreciates all the nuances that the general listener misses. I am so glad I stumbled on your video, and on a different note, I like the way you wear your hair. You remind me of a young Kylie Minogue. Kindly, C.
Merry Christmas Beth! Wishing you all the very best for the festive season❤ NKC is one of my all-time singers with his smooth and soothing voice. Loved your analysis and technical insights into what made him so awesome!😊
I learned to love him from my mother. She was born in 1930 and he was her early and forevermore crush. So I grew up knowing what good phrasing sounds like.
I just love what I term the classic vocal era of the 1930s, 40s and 50s, you know the Sinatra's, Peggy Lee, Tony Bennett and so many more. Nat King Cole was certainly part of that. A new artist I like to bring to your attention who is in that classic tradition is Gregory Porter. He is worth checking out. He even released a tribute album of Nat King Cole. :)
Yup! My favorite artist too. Just love your analysis of Nat's artistry and performance. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas with your loved ones and looking forward to more of your reactions...
🙏Please, please, please, would you do an analysis on Stardust by King Cole? It's in the top 3 of my all-time favorite songs (by any singer) -- except that each time I listen to it, it pops up to number 1! It's a gorgeous song and Cole's version is my favorite, because he has the good taste to largely leave it alone. He sings it straight, without a lot of embellishment. He doesn't have the big ego of many popular performers, feeling that he needs to take a song and make it his own somehow. It probably comes from the fact that he never really saw himself as a singer. He sang because the people liked it, but he was such a brilliant naturally-talented jazz pianist that he thought of himself primarily as an instrumentalist.
I love your videos and the incredibly valuable gift of voice coaching info you share with us - thank you so much! I also love how much you love listening to your favorite singers. Your response is as wonderful as the singing itself. I wanted to add that part of the richness of Nat King Cole's voice was due to his chain-smoking 3 packs of Kool cigarettes a day. Sadly in 1965, NKC died of lung cancer. Here's some info I found online: "Cole was a heavy smoker of Kool menthol cigarettes; it was said that he believed that smoking up to three packs a day gave his voice the rich sound it had. He became a chain-smoker and smoking several cigarettes in rapid succession before a recording for that very purpose."
Nat KIng Cole is probably my favorite as well. I think his voice is so smooth and silky. Very rich and luxurious. I would like to see you analyze Mickey Gilley. IMO, he is the country version of Nat King Cole. Thanks!
Merry belated Christmas, and a very happy new year to you on this beautiful New Year’s Day! May 2023 be amazing for you and certainly better than last year.

So, I'm pretty sure this is actually a live performance on his part. This is from the Danny Kaye show and I've gone back and listened to all the studio recordings I could find that he did and cannot find one where he sings it exactly the same as on this show, especially the ending. On none of the other recordings I found did he dip down to that low note at the end of the last phrase.
This is my first time hearing your reaction and it is delightful and insightful. I went to your reaction to Lea Solanga (sp?) and found that great as well. I note the majority of your reactions are to single singers. You may find that Voctave is a group of singers of amazing skill and talent with a wide range of songs to consider. I urge you to take a listen to one of the following of theirs: Mary Did You Know, Disney Princess Medley, and O Come All Ye Faithful to get hooked on their musicality and singing skills.
He's my favourite too! And bear in mind he made it at a time when being a black American meant he had to be twice as good as his white counterparts to be considered acceptable.
Capitol must have given him a voice and diction coach as the qualities of his singing changed considerably between his days with the NKC trio and his emergence as a 50's superstar.
Hello B, I am going to keep on trying until someone reacts to Rachelle Ferrral's "AMERICA the BEAUTIL". You will love it my friend. I can not wait,....OH, and Merry Christmas
You are soooooo beautiful. The fact that you also love Nat King Cole really makes me swoon. : ) I also love Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day, Jo Stafford, The Mills Brothers, and so many others from that golden age of entertainment.
Merry Christmas, Bethany! Nat King Cole possessed one of the greatest voices ever to sing. He was an accomplished piano player as well. I'm not sure which I like better: his phrasing and enunciation, or that rich timbre. His technique is so effortless in the clip that you can tell he put in the practice. The combo of singing on the edges of the expected and the beautiful variety of vocal tones and textures is shared by my vocal obsession, Angelina Jordan. I stumbled onto a great Nat King Cole trio rendition of Nature Boy that I think you'd love. Here's the link.ua-cam.com/video/Iq0XJCJ1Srw/v-deo.html
Yes, Nat 'King' Cole is probably the best male vocalist of all time. Plenty of iconic songs from him, 'NatureBoy' being one in particular. So how about a superb cover? Not long ago, they reported a list of the Top 50 jazz singers of all time. Ella was #1, Sinatra #2, Nat King Cole #3, and Billie Holiday #4, so you having him as your favorite is something I fully understand. For me it was Billie Holiday.
@@jadezee6316 - Not sure where &who did the polling but I assume it had to occur among people in the music industry who are truly knowledgeable about jazz singers? To tell you the truth, I didn't even consider Sinatra a jazz singer, feeling he was more of what they used to call a 'crooner' like Bing Crosby. Even Nat wasn't on my radar as a jazz singer but he was unique with that voice of his. Ella and Billie, I would think 'jazz' for sure, having heard them described as jazz singers by many sources. Personally, I would have considered singers like Etta James & Peggy Lee to be top level jazz singers with Amy Winehouse radically affecting the genre much more than any of them. With regard to truly improvisational jazz singing, Billie with her ' breathy', 'whisper-like' inflections and 'key' changes. within specific lyrical lines, and Amy with her 'slurring' of words was also something that did add a unique effect to jazz , but I believe Amy was also a big fan of Billie Holiday and adopted parts of her style as well. Young Angelina Jordan has come to be called the current 'Queen Of Jazz' and incorporates both Billie and Amy's inflections & nuances in much of her heartfelt ballad singing, having said that she wouldn't be the singer she is, if not for Billie Holiday. I also noticed that when Amy won her Grammy for her album 'Back To Black'. right there in the audience, cheering like a schoolgirl, was none other than The Great Adele', who while not being a jazz singer, was starstruck by Amy, much in the way Angelina was with Billie Holiday.
There was no way to edit Nat's breath control with the recording tech at the time. In those days, what you heard was direct to disk; there was no tape. Just FYI-not a criticism. Thanks for your critique and enthusiasm. It's catching.
His version of this song is so iconic that most artists rightfully don't even try a version of their own. Nat King Cole absolutely possesses this song
My favorite Christmas song performed by my favorite Christmas singer. I had a music class in High School and one of the choir kids asked about how they could improve their jazz phrasing... Even as a little child, I LOVED to hear my mother's Nat King Cole albums.
Love Nat King Cole! My father loved his Spanish songs and I love “Walk-in my Baby Back Home” and “A Blossom Fell”
Nat King Cole is the greatest voice. "Walking my Baby back Home" is my favorite of all his recordings, followed by "Destination Moon".
He knows how to Sing a great story or song. He narrates everything with his singing. Always amazing.
His voice is almost as brilliant as your smile while you’re listening to him
He was also a great jazz pianist and its been said he loved playing piano even more than singing. A talent that only comes around once in a life time!
Hearing Nat cole sing a song is like being drawn into a deliciously comfortable, loving embrace. There is no substitute, he was a one and only.

The late great Nat King Colr, no one has ever equaled nor even tried to sing "The Christmas Song" as he did!

effect to jazz , but I believe Amy was also a big fan of Billie Holiday and adopted parts of her style as well. Young Angelina Jordan has come to
be called the current 'Queen Of Jazz' and incorporates both Billie and Amy's inflections & nuances in much of her heartfelt ballad singing, having

The Great Adele', who while not being a jazz singer, was starstruck by Amy,
much in the way Angelina was with Billie Holiday.
I have always said the exact same thing.
