Thanks! I think it's just that the guitars that come with the sustainer built-in have dual humbuckers, the driver is just one set of coils whatever it's in, I believe. I hope to do another duet with Stuart this weekend (time permitting), but there will definitely be more sustainer to come, I'm really enjoying it :)
Hello Chrissie, I'm Attilio Virgilio from Rome. Since few days ago I follow your channel. Congratulations ! Recently I bought a stratocastr signature ( O' Brien) with Fernades Sustainer. At the moment, I find this pick up very difficult to use, always needing to get strings to vibrate with fingers or bridge. Strings are also to keeep very very close to the sustainer. Finally it's a good pickup for ambient music but nothing if paired to EBOW that I use since 40 years. Thank you for all your videos, I liked a lot those when you play violin and explain the guitar sinths. Ciao!
Thanks for you lovely comment. Yes, the sustainer does take a while to get the hang of but I beleive it's worth the effort :) I find it very a different tool to the eBow - the eBow has it's own sounds, whereas the sustainer is nearer to the 'normal' guitar sound, so I find they have different uses
Después de ver muchos videos al fin alguien aclara esto de que no es un sustain para los acordes que era lo que me interesaba. Gracias, excelente video, saludos desde Utuguay
I must admit it didn't occur to me until I heard someone mention it a few years ago, but it does seem right. I keep meaning to do a violin cover of Spectral Mornings but never quite get round to it :)
Thank you for the great demo Chrissy. It is hard to find demos of the Fernandes sustainer with cleaner guitar sounds… nearly all feature heavy distortion and whammy shred. I have been curious as to whether this would an effective musical tool in more subtle territory, and I believe the answer is yes. Your insights and tasteful playing are much appreciated!
I believe the top of the three way toggle should be all sustain with no feedback added. Thanks for demo. I'd also recommend buying a Fernandes with one installed from the used market. This way you can try it out and resell for the same money if it's not for you.
They definitely take some getting used to - I'm much better with mine now than I was when I made this. Also, it seems to be easier to find pre-installed Sustainiac units than Fernandes's (at least in the UK). I'm planning a video on comparing the two in the near future.
Thanks for the great video. My son wants to use this and pull the frets for a fretless guitar. So hearing your thoughts on this is great. Nice if the lower strings didn't do feedback.
Thanks, I bet the sustainer would amazing on a fretless guitar! The feeback is less annoying as you get used to controlling it, but you do still need to be careful. I'm having a Sustainer fitted to a PRS SE at the moment, so I'm interested to know if the feedback is better or worse on that instrument. I'll report back. (and please do report back if your son has different results too). I'm interested to know if it's guitar specific
I’m the guy that hits a thumbs up on every video, positive comment and reply. I have one of the 1st prototype Fernandez Sustainer Strat style guitars from the beginning. I got it from the NAM Show in LA, back in the day. It’s 1/2” thick Flame Maple bookend top on a solid 1 pc of Mahogany with the pick-up config that is SSH but looks like HSH. It has the blend knob and 2 small switches and it’s solid as a rock and very heavy like a LP. One of the PU’s has the lite on the front. I have had great results using it with a Vol pedal and a Whammy at the same time or alternating. It is in one of my Duncan Sheik vids. You might find it interesting to apply or incorporate into your own style. Trying to be friendly. Am I at the wrong place? Peace and Maximum Respect ~ Loo
Thanks, no you're definitely in the right place, and I love your attitude, we need more of the positive people on UA-cam for sure! I'll check out your video, it sounds interesting, thank you :)

Hi, you mention that the sustainer drains the battery quite quickly. Does the battery also drain when the sustainer switch is turned off or is it better to remove the battery when not using it?
If the jack is unplugged then the battery doesn't drain at all, so it's important to do that if you leave the guitar for any length of time. It drains most when doing actual sustaining, fairly obviously, and also a bit less when the guitar is used for normal playing. Normally there's no need to take the battery out until you need to change it. I have a Fishman Fluence rechargeable battery pack now, and that works really well.
@@ChrissieCaulfield Thanks Chrissie. I bought an Ed Obrien guitar which also has the Fernandes circuit and was surprised that my battery was dead after I did not play my guitar for a week or so. I think you solved the mystery! I left the lead plugged into the guitar. This circuit requires the battery even when not using the sustainer, which is the only downside to the guitar.
It depends which "Fernandes" pickupo you mean. The bridge pickup is a humbucker and the neck pickup is a single coil. When the sustainer is on, then the bridge (humbucker) pickup is automatically selected (regardless of the blade switch position). When the sustainer is off the the pickup selected by the blade switch is active. I hope this clears things up.
Hi Chrissie, great video. Who installed the sustainer for you? I have one but have some issues getting it to work on my strat. Need to get some help with it so any info would be appreciated, thanks so much! Cheers!
Rather than post his phone number here, if that's useful to you then email me from my bandcamp page (link on the main channel page) and I'll pass it on.
Hello chrissie, like you sayed on 5.10 It's not what i expected, and realy it's not what i would suspect from this unit. The sustain comes in but very slowly and weak. So check this out with other movies on youtube with the sustainer unit and maybe show your own movie (this one) to fernandes people, and ask what they find of this. Dian from the Netherlands
It's fine, really. There's a knob at the bottom that controls how quickly the sustainer comes in and I had that down a bit. Also (as I found out) the sustainer is quite heavy on the battery and I had to change it soon after this
The one mistake that you make is assuming! ASSUMING that a Squier isn't a quality guitar. In many instances I'd pick a Squier vintage modified over a Mexican Strat. If you play a few, you can find one that sings. The name doesn't mean a thing. It only gets you to spend more money with the false belief that you are buying a better item.
if you bought a mexican strat and then added a fernandez sustainer... why not just buy an EOB strat? a mexican strat with fernandez sustainer built in... probably cheaper too...
I like how you approached this product and talked about the way it not only works, but also how it interacts with other similar products. Thank you!
I didn't even know Fernandes made the Sustainer in a single coil form. This is a great demo, Ide love to see you do some more videos with it!
Thanks!

There are quite a few videos of me using it - have a look my Glider Theory playlist, the lastest ones have a LOT of fernandes action.

I've never thought about Steve as playing like a violinist. Makes sense.

8:50 Jeff Becks "Where were you?"
Are the pots normal function please?
The top one is a normal volume, the middle one is a tone for ALL pickups, and the bottom one controls the sustainer intensity.
