The Truncator went on to do well, there's now a tipping trailer a log splitter and theirs now a new saw horse , And The Truncator is made at Calworth Orchard, near Skelwith Bridge, where four people work flat out putting together parts made in China, Liverpool and Carlisle. They cannot keep up with demand. It is sold in garden centres and agricultural suppliers throughout the UK, and also online with Ireland, Netherlands, France, Poland and Germany starting to take orders. ###
The product was fine. No doubt there is a market. Unfortunately, the owner has a strong negativity streak to his personality. Nobody want to work with him.
soon as i saw the product i knew it’d do extremely well. what a convenient product!! i have nothing to do with log splitting but looking at the way it neatly tips over gave me such satisfaction lol im glad to hear the product is doing well xx
I'm actually quite surprised. It's a brilliant product but I really didn't think there was a big market in the UK or Ireland for that but the more vocal guy clearly had a lot of experience and knew the market. He just had a very negative attitude and didn't have the statistics to back it up. The Nordics would be a great place to sell these, especially Finland. Lots of Finns have their own summer cottage and many have land with trees that they need to cut down. North America would also be a great market and some parts of South America I'm guessing.
He was right that the market is in people buying chainsaws. Why else would you buy a chainsaw. Investors also need to understand the market they are serving to, good on the guy he's doing well. It is a good product. Dragons wanting the future presented as fact is sometimes a bit ludicrous
A big heart doesn't get you long in the business world. Ruthlessnes, knowing your numbers and your value does. Or else you'd just be taking advantage of...
They do know their numbers - they just don't know them memorised by heart..... It's crazy how they aren't allowed to have a notepad with their numbers written down (especially when the Dragons themselves do) - and the entrepreneurs are expected to just stand there with nothing - expecting to have literally every number for every question completely memorised.
A lot of people know how to provide the product, but don't understand business accounting. I didn't when I started my engineering firm (although I did understand the basics of accounting), and struggled when dealing with the banks/creditors to understand what they wanted and why. Also, my business model doesn't fit what they are used to, because equipment sales are just a small part of the business, and because most of it is milestone billing, monthly forecasts and balance sheets aren't really meaningful.
@@NuttyJun To be fair, I don't think the Dragons having a notepad to jot down numbers is the same as an entrepreneur needing it. To explain: - The dragons have to listen to multiple pitches every day. They have to jot down the numbers for the purpose of conversation because the entrepreneur is presenting them information they don't know. - The entrepreneur by contrast doesn't have to present multiple businesses. They are supposed to know their business. Effectively, they're supposed to know what it costs them to produce what they sell; what they sell it for, how much each sale is worth to them and the aggregate of what that represents in income. What they're making vs what they're spending. - The Entrepreneur being expected to know the numbers for 'their business' is not unlike a student making a presentation on a single topic. A teacher may jot down notes because the teacher has to listen to 20 some-odd presentations and then question the students, etc. it's part of the process. A student making the presentation wouldn't be allowed to have their 'notes' on hand when they make the presentation since they're not supposed to just read it. - Now I understand the devil's advocate argument as well. I sometimes think: "Surely it wouldn't be so bad if they were allowed to have a sheet of paper that had their balance sheet information and they could refer to it. After all, the dragons place such high value on that information and if the entrepreneur can't give it, maybe the dragons lose out on a great investment because the entrepreneur couldn't articulate it properly" - in other words, not letting the entrepreneur have this information on hand could also cheat the dragons out of a good deal if they could see the information, realize the value, even if the entrepreneur can't explain it properly by heart. It's a lot of pressure for the entrepreneur to present their business with these numbers needing to be known by heart. But that's essentially part of this whole presentation. They're supposed to know it. This is their business, the one thing they're responsible for knowing when it comes to this presentation. It's expected of them that they can learn this by heart. Is it fair? It depends on who you ask. We've seen entrepreneurs who nail their numbers. Absolutely nail them. Then we've seen people who may know their numbers, but just falter under the limelight. Similarly there are people who simply say: "I don't know, you'll have to move on I guess.". In the end, there's a reason the dragons are allowed to jot down the numbers. It's because they're being told information they don't know, that they have to make a decision on. They also go through several pitches so numbers could get jumbled if they couldn't keep track of what they're hearing. It's like a teacher listening to a student's presentation given by heart. The teacher will grade the student in part on fielding questions. Those questions come from what the teacher hears in the student's presentation, because the teacher doesn't need to know that information before hand. The student had the duty of researching, learning, memorizing and then presenting a subject. So when the teacher listens to the presentation, they jot down a few notes so they can question the student on it after. Multiple students doing this means the teacher will be jotting down a few notes for every student's presentation. The teacher isn't expected to know what the 20 students presentations will be, he's expected (or she's expected) to listen to the presentation, take notes, then come up with questions based on what they heard for the grading process. Entrepreneurs here need to be intimately familiar with their business. They should know the fundamental numbers of the balance sheet. There are a core group of numbers that are particularly important and should be known. They are responsible for being able to present this one thing to the dragons. The dragons are responsible for listening and fielding questions based on what they hear. So they need to jot down what they hear in order to make an assessment and ask questions. I'm thankful for your comment and I hope this conveys why I think it's okay for the dragons to jot things down in the show while still being okay for the entrepreneur to be expected to know their numbers of their 1 business. Thanks-!
Totally agree - the Australians also have (or had) a Shark Tank and I suspect they copied the American model rather than the UK. The UK Dragon's Den is the only one worth watching - slick / quick witted / ruthless dragons (as they should be) ... and the entrepreneurs come from all over the world.

If a deal is made there's a period of time afterwards where they actually check the numbers before signing anything. The numbers being in their head is just to show actual preparedness, professionalism and also a fair bit of TV drama for when they forget.

Did they sell 3000-4000?

A big heart is no good when you're in business
A big heart doesn't get you long in the business world. Ruthlessnes, knowing your numbers and your value does. Or else you'd just be taking advantage of...
How could entrepreneurs not know their numbers but want investment?
If it's there business they should know the costs of everything.
@@NuttyJun good point. Some people aren't good at remembering numbers. And in the real world, people would be able to bring those numbers with them.
@@NuttyJun To be fair, I don't think the Dragons having a notepad to jot down numbers is the same as an entrepreneur needing it. To explain:
- The dragons have to listen to multiple pitches every day.

Yeah great product, a bit niche, but if you have a usage for it it seems awesome. The dragons also seemed to like it, the owner just didnt click with any of them. @@duffman18 Wrong. There's North-Holland and South-Holland. Holland isn't a province. Why do ignorant people speak with so much confidence?
Hilary Devey had a heart of gold I gotta say, the way she handled the first was very sweet actually.
40% for the experience of learning from a professional - which was clearly her weak area - might have been a net win for the first lady. Best of luck to her.
She didn't get an offer. After the filming of that episode ended, and so the Dragon could actually go through the numbers and vet the business, the deal fell through, because it turned out she was actually losing money, not making a profit, she just had no idea about that because she didn't understand the first thing about business and numbers.
So the company went bankrupt and closed down years ago.
“What are your balance sheets?” Tbh I wouldn’t understand that question either. Like, is she supposed to go down line items in her head? Very pointed question, supposed to trip her up
sorry, she clearly didnt know what a balance sheet is. where does she have her numbers from then?
She should at least learn what a balance sheet is before she went in. She'd know what numbers to give, when asked that question.
Pretty basic question for anyone, never mind a business person!
No wonder people have so much debt
Like what’s her debt to equity ratio might be a fair question but “what are the balance sheets” is so vague and nebulous, most people would at least ask to clarify. Yeah she wasn’t well informed but the question wasn’t phrased in a helpful way.
I feel lit would really helpful for her to take a couple of business classes. She obviously knows her product and it sells well. She has the intangible stuff down. If she had some structure and fundamentals down, it could be very helpful.

Europe is not NEARLY as rural or woodwork orientated as America or Canada. That invention would have been competed for by the dragons if they were american or canadian but in Europe its only really going to be of use for companies actually doing that business or in freaking Russia.
Why do they make them remember figures? As a Dragon I wouldn't trust that. Have it on paper or displays.
Well, that wouldn't be fun, would it?
Agree
If a deal is made there's a period of time afterwards where they actually check the numbers before signing anything. The numbers being in their head is just to show actual preparedness, professionalism and also a fair bit of TV drama for when they forget.
