If you want to hear how much Stanley respected Vincent read his books or if thats a bit much there's plenty of snippets of him talking about the habits of Vincent, it really doesn't sound good, from his 1st jam when he went done on his knees to pouring his food back into the bands Stew pot to stanley having to pull him off stage to stop his extended solo which came close to a fight as Vincent told Stanley to never do that again, the guy was an egoistical, ignorant, arrogant, puke shredding guitar asshole, who got his ass finally fired! Stanley's words.shame, why do you think he didn't get invited to anything kiss related? they couldn't stand him. He comes back after 20 years doesn't play any shred guitar, looks very strange, fails to turn up to his own gigs, and charges a fortune for his online cds etc, his website looks hacked presently. What’s genius about his playing is he doesn’t always land the phrase finishing notes in key. He finds an alternative note to what your brain expects to hear and rides it into another direction. Like most shredders, Vinnie shows his musical chops when he slows down. He can compose some amazing pieces but he relies on gluing them together with just cramming notes into measures. Pretty much anything he plays would sound even better at half tempo. I listen to his solos trying to pick out the parts where he slows down and does something with the phrasing. There is not much room for phrasing when everything is sixteenth notes. It's impressive to see that speed and accuracy, but it's very one note (sorry for the pun) music writing.
There is a famous quote-- If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter. (attributed to multiple sources).

As much as people slag him, he is MASSIVELY talented. Just ask the people he's played with. Also, the guys in Iron Maiden have all said he has Jeff Beck DOWN. Obviously, he wasn't trying to play in the style of the mid-late 80's (shredder city) which doesn't translate well into today's music. Unfortunately, at times he was playing for VV instead of playing for the song - though he certainly can play tastefully. A Million to One comes to mind.....

Vinnie is awesome, I used to like him, then I hated it, but now after listening to him say things like "when I see this Dm7 and this E7 I see and hear this scale", by using the "block" you can use any notes in that block (Marty Friedman even says so), yes it better fits jazz progressions and if he was playing over those it would be similar to Helmets solos style sound. Yes its fast, yes its chaotic just like his life, its a projection of his inner self. but to say he has no "felling" is stupid, just listen to that beautiful wall of sound, frequency and chaos, it makes me "feel" like playing air guitar right along with him and let out some aggression and blow some shit up with some Whammy Bar Dive Bombs, all with a smile on my face for Vinnie doing it exactly the way he wanted to.

Vizron Creative Media He is very talented, I'm not denying that by any means. It's just that there were parts of this instructional video where he strummed the strings way too fast in a very scratchy, sloppy pace and made his solos sound like total crap. There were other parts of this video however where he did excellent work though. Vinnie Vincent honestly has amazingly talented fast fingered skill which is good but sometimes he just needs to slow it down a bit so the guitar doesn't sound so wretchedly scratchy and horrid.
See? I'm being honest. He is very talented nevertheless.

Albert Juarez I didn't say I know nothing about guitar playing. I've learned a few things in the past but I've always been better with rhythm strumming work rather than lead guitar work. Personally I think Vinnie Vincent is very talented, but I was being honest over the fact that there were several parts of this clip where he did in fact play his guitar in a horribly bad sounding way. There are several other lead guitarists that obviously do much better work than he did here. Like for example, Elliot Easton from The Cars is unbelievably amazing but unfortunately he has always been too underrated. Eddie Van Halen from Van Halen is incredible. Paul Dean, the guitarist and founder of the Canadian rock band Loverboy is great. Bruce Kulick, Kiss's fourth lead guitarist was truly the best. Then there is Yngwie Malmsteen of whom is undeniably one of the most sensational guitarists in the world.
So I never said I know nothing about guitar playing, I agree that the majority of this was in fact horrible. Vinnie Vincent still has amazing talent, but he should have just focused on his skill in a more focused, coordinated fashion when he did this video.
      ~Dutch

Albert Juarez Okay, well you are welcome to believe whatever you want about him. However, you didn't have to tell me that I know nothing about guitar playing. That was kind of blunt. I know how to strum certain chords in a rhythmic fashion but I've never been good at playing lead guitar work. I personally think Vinnie Vincent has talent, but I was upfront about the fact that he did do a lot of horrible playing in this instructional video. My personal favourite lead guitarist of all time is Elliot Easton formerly of The Cars. That's a prime example of an unbelievably amazing guitarist with extreme enthusiasm. He without a doubt blows Vinnie Vincent away in a heartbeat.

The more I look into this guy the more I see what kind of people hate him. The more I see what kind of people hate him, the more I like him.
Please do not read this. It's too long for *YOU* to read:
I had trouble with his style at first because I approached it from a metal perspective and got confused like the guys who kinda know a little theory and think they have it figured out because they are conforming to the most basic expectations implied by that music theory which is nothing more than an attempt at representing/describing the preferred harmonic conventions valued in European symphonic music from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and not what "music" "is." Looking at it like challenging dissonant Greg Ginn like wild noise, it actually kinda works.
I think Gene Simmons characterisation of his playing was accurate but that's why it's growing on me in particular. From an essentially "Anti-rock" perspective it's brilliant. Especially how he was able to get way into that world and defile it and even remain a figure within it. The type of strick musicality that people champion as somehow mandatory is often very boring and sometimes even frustrating to me. I sometimes prefer it for certain applications and I often enjoy it in popular music but the whole thing i enjoy about rock "music" (I hate calling Rock, Metal, and punk "music", I do not see it as music but rather something that often utilizes musical ideas, I do not call what I do music and would find that offensive, I'm dead serious) To me, most post-blues pop music in general is chucks or rough hewn noise badly forced together without the appropriate motion and sometimes even resolution expectations and skipping the correct scale and harmony steps and it comes more from using the instrument physically than real composition. Think "Pinhead" by The Ramones, the kinda thing Captain Beefheart would do sincerely and Zappa would do as a knock on the popular rock and blues people in the 70s expected him to perform. Like cheech and chong doing a parody of punk or metal. They were making fun of people like myself. I kinda enjoy playing it all back to them now. It's the exact personality that killed rock and roll and is still ruining it that it offends. I can't wait untill they are all dead. I'm sure half of them will out live me somehow, heh.

Oh yeah, and be sure to leave your distortion box on when you are tuning up.

It's musically horrendous. There's a video on UA-cam where Steel Panther's "Satchel" talks about how you can just play any damn notes you want, as long as you land a note that happens to be in key. Even though he's half joking there's something to be said for that. But Vinnie doesn't ever land on a note anywhere.
His playing is the equivalent of sonic guitar vomit. A machine gun of cacophony spewing away. Someone here said he should play for Slayer. I'd actually agree with that lol.

For all you haters, this was the style in the '80's. This is what a lot of metal guitarists aspired to play back then, and people thought it sounded good. It's like any other phase in rock history and it's a matter of personal opinion on whether or not it has aged well.

What is funny about Kiss in general is they seem to have had problems with many talented guitarists that were formerly in the band. Vinnie without any doubts was in this category. Any member that made KISS not the center of attention, were labeled as problemed. I am not a KISS fanboy, but I do like a lot of their stuff. I am not arguing which guitarist was the best. I liked Ace, Bruce and Vinne. I will conceed I am not crazy about Vinnie's all over the place solos on the instructional, but he is a fine guitarist! Gene Simmons to me is the ego driven creator/ band member and NOT sure I have ever heard him say a kind word about past members. So in essence, would could infer Gene in fact, is the dick head!

why so many negative comments? he is good. maybe you guys never heard about jazz. i think Vinnie have the experience on jazz cause he's playing with lots of chromatic and bibbo licks, and he puts it on metal song. look at those awesome right hands picking. he did use both picks and fingers. it was a hard picking technique.

He should have just signed the contract to be a full time member of Kiss and brought his ego down maybe he would still be in the band and a bigger success, guy is very talented and did help Kiss make a good comeback with the Lick it up album , could have gone further if he was not a ego maniac

A lot of guitar "aficionados" criticizing Vinnie's playing here. Usually those negative comments come from people who can't play fast. That was just his thing. It was within his right to play as fast as he damn well wanted....and he did. The solo at the 6:00 mark is brilliant! I think he's phenomenal! LOL....He can get a bit carried away and sometimes it is sloppy, but it's organic, if mechanical.

The comment section its funny as hell, 'He can't play" "Its just noise"...
Did you guys ever heard the songs that he wrote? The demos? Did you guys know that he had a amazing voice? Every example played on the video he's explaining how it works, which notes compose it, if its just noise and he don't know how to play, how he's explaing all the theory parts?
"Those solos don't fit with the song"
Why not? He wrote the songs, he can play the solo the way he want.
When somebody show me a great argument about Vinnie "bad playing" we can have a conversation.

Vinnie was a great guitarist and remember his time was the 1980's..for heavy rock style guitar..a lot of guitarists were boring compared to Vinnie at the time. Creatures of the night album track had a great solo in it. We have had and still do have guitarists who have this shredding style today..and I dont see them complaining about the style. He can go over the top..but so many guitarists do. The sound quality on here isn't great..so take that into consideration. I saw him in 1983 with Kiss..he was excellent and I'm more of a Ace Frehley classic rock style. Vinnie has more Eddie van Halen, schenker, randy rhodes style of guitar playing..which was fine for the 1980's.

  • @CraftonBarnes

He's actually really good, watching some of the picking technique I can now hear what I couldnt figure out from him all those years due to the God awful distortion tone he liked to use on the solo records. No offense either, because at the time I was totally into it, I still love that first VVI record. But this just reminds me of how difficult it would get to hear the individual notes he would play on some of that stuff. I still say his best work is Creatures and that first VVI record. Very talented and very very underrated. Chicken picking is no easy thing to pull off, no pun intended...

He certainly has chops, but he doesn’t sound like he pays attention to what beat he’s on, when each measure begins and ends, and when chords change. Those things should determine your note selection. On the other hand, if you’re just blowing through scales at light speed, then your playing just sounds like puking (as Paul Stanley described Vinnie’s playing in his book). Many people think Eddie Van Halen is random, but his solos actually have rhyme and reason-the Beat It solo is a perfect example.

Ok so I am assuming that Vinnie was tasked with teaching would be players a bit about his style, hence the title of video. I believe he may have missed the mark by say,a couple of planets. I was a teenager metalhead during the 80s so I do know that the shredtastic style was in full force but cmon. George Lynch could and did play shreddy but sooo much more soulfully. I do like Vinnie's playing in KISS and the first VVI lp ( even the broken record ending of the lp lol) but beyond that...ahhhh no. I even bought the Treasure lp he is on. So Im not a total Vinnie/Vinessa hater.
