Funny thing.. I was listening to this on my Walkman because the film Maurice really enchanted me back in 1987. It really haunted me, as a gay man. On the Hampton Jitney from NYC to Southampton, the gay male steward who was slighltly hitting on me, said to me, "Oh. So you like.. church music." Which no I actuallly didn't, I liked pop and electronic dance mixes of British things then. It was impossible then to explain why I was listening to "Miserere" from the Maurice soundtrack. Because the film moved me deeply. Wasn't about "church music " at all. And in late 2019, strange that Maurice is completely unavailable on streaming, even though it was a remarkable film by Merchant /Ivory about gay rights. I would love to see it again, and think it might be educational for others too. Why is it not easily available, why is it not on Netflix or Amazon Prime? A mystery why this film is kept so purposefully obscure and hidden. Because it's kind of great. Quality. But I haven't seen it in years, it's been so strangled and suppressed. Why?

Arundel Mercure You can now watch the full film on UA-cam. Also, thank you for sharing your experience. The movie moved me and I remember before I watched it someone told me that Maurice is the type of film that will forever be engraved in your mind and heart.

I'm really longing to see this film on Netflix (which is the biggest? streaming plateform). Maurice is so underrated. I found it by pure hazard. Really this needs to be seen everywhere.
Unlike you, I'm very young (17yo) but as a lesbian this movie hit me hard. It is my favorite movie of all times. And like you I'm not that much into church music but the "energy" this one has.. It reminds me of Maurice, and especially this scene with the cracking chair (which is my absolute favorite one). I hope you have a good life.

Wow, I found this thread last year, right after I read the novel and watched the movie, and it's so heartwarming to see people with such different experiences share the love for this masterpiece (the movie, the book, and the soundtrack...)

"Strangled and suppressed" is a very good way to put it! Expect movies like this to become even more obscure, if not outright cancelled, as we spiral into the abyss of critical race theory and identity politics. The film may be a profoundly moving story about gay men and the struggles that we have historically gone through, but it has a totally white cast and this one is mainly about upper-class, white gay men. Even more damning is that this movie is set at the height of the British colonial empire. We are in an insane time where everything, even our most inspiring and transformational works of art and literature, are being assessed Maoist Cultural Revolution style through the lens of critical race theory, and our history is being rewritten and expunged to fit the purposes of this new cult.

i watched maurice when i was very young and it really helped me, a very touching film that should be more widely recognised. my school choir sang this in chapel one day soon after i had seen it for the first time and i remember crying for a reason i couldnt explain, because this music suddenly meant so much to me and stood for so much. thank you

I like how they used Allegri's Miserere long before it became a cinematic cliche.

Are there any films employing Miserere Deus? As for this movie specifically, I think it's the point, because it was King's College Cambridge that once again brought this piece to truly public prominence.

@@sinogarcon It is now all over the place, much like the sequence (Dies Irae) from Mozart's requiem. some uses are mentioned here: mapeel.blogspot.com/2008/03/allegris-miserere-turning-up-all-over.html But I've seen it in shows too (e.g. the Leftovers). I'm not complaining, to be sure. i like it when quality prevails!
I've sung the semi-chorus alto part so many times for solemn vespers and lenten Masses (in Latin, though). One of my favorites!

Have mercy upon me, O God, after Thy great goodness
According to the multitude of Thy mercies do away mine offences.
Wash me thoroughly from my wickedness: and cleanse me from my sin.
For I acknowledge my faults: and my sin is ever before me.
Against Thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that Thou mightest be justified in Thy saying, and clear when Thou art judged.
Behold, I was shapen in wickedness: and in sin hath my mother conceived me.
But lo, Thou requirest truth in the inward parts: and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly.
Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness: that the bones which Thou hast broken may rejoice.
Turn Thy face from my sins: and put out all my misdeeds.
Make me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from Thy presence: and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
O give me the comfort of Thy help again: and stablish me with Thy free Spirit.
Then shall I teach Thy ways unto the wicked: and sinners shall be converted unto Thee.
Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, Thou that art the God of my health: and my tongue shall sing of Thy righteousness.
Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord: and my mouth shall shew [show] Thy praise.
For Thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it Thee: but Thou delightest not in burnt-offerings.
The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, shalt Thou not despise.
O be favourable and gracious unto Sion: build Thou the walls of Jerusalem.
Then shalt Thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with the burnt-offerings and oblations: then shall they offer young bullocks upon Thine altar.

The provenance behind this lovely piece of music is very interesting. It was composed by Allegri around 1630AD as a setting of Psalm 51 based on the traditional ancient plainchant associated with that psalm. The interesting story is how it came to be known and sung outside of the Sistine Chapel.
