- "Kyrie" was a #1 hit song by the 1980s pop/rock band Mr. Mister, from their 1985 album Welcome to the Real World. (Kyrie Eleison, is Greek translation for "Lord have mercy"). Released in late 1985, it hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in March 1986, where it was #1 for two weeks. Mr. Mister is an American pop rock band most popular in the 1980s. The band's name came from an inside joke about a Weather Report album called Mr. Gone where they referred to each other as "Mister This" or "Mister That", and eventually selected "Mr. Mister." Mr. Mister may be considered as representative of the melodic sound of 1980s pop rock. The band consisted of Richard Page on vocals and bass guitar, Steve George on keyboards, Pat Mastelotto on acoustic and electronic drums and Steve Farris on guitars.

I named my daughter Kyrie after this song!
At The gates of heaven there must be 80s music blasting
Your comment has me speechless 🙏🙏🙏🙏.
Same... I know I'll be running towards it 👼
Yes this is possibly the best comment of all time
Absolutely. I know I'm heading through the gates with them blaring Huey Lewis, Culture Club, Roxette and so much more classics of the 80s.
It’s US marines playing it, obviously
Mr. Mister had the perfect 80s blend of synthesizers, guitars, and electronic drums.
Just had Kyrie Eleison tattooed on my shoulder. My heart stopped beating last year and I'm lucky to be here.
🙏🏾
I lost my mom due to neglect and abuse but as a child she would drive me around at night and we would blare this song and drive around the city screaming and singing our hearts off. The best memories i have of my mother originated from this song.
❤
So I was named after this song ☺️
Played on mother's funeral for the beauty and religious aspects of this amazing song. Whenever I hear it, I wanted to jump into my swimming pool and swim around. Miss you mother and father, RIP.
Amen and boy do we need the Lord’s mercy now.
This is a wonderful song that we need to hear in these awful times of deception, irrational fear, and loneliness. Lord, have mercy on us all.
🙏🏾
'Lord have mercy' in Greek. The road we all must travel has twists, turns, detours, curves, slopes, etc.....and it is the way we drive and pay attention to our surroundings that matters...thanks, guys, for this memorable song!
I was 13 when this came out, it blew me away! I knew every lyric 😂 what fabulous days & an absolute legendary decade! When life was happy & joyful.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I once thought Kyrie Eleison was the name of a person.
We all did. Lol
Same lol I think most of us did...
ELEYSON MEANS (LATIN)GIVE ME MERCY, AND KYRIE IS ONE OF HIGHEST NAME OF SUPREME GOD (LATIN)
I woke up and had a yearning for this song. I listened and looked up the meaning and found it meant Lord have mercy. The Holy Spirit was guiding me to that message unknown to me but known to Him. Thank you Lord.❤
Very well found.👍🙂 You can find the background and history of this Mr. Mister song on this site: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyrie_(song)
Baruch hashem!
With all the horrible things in the world going on right now, this song is so relevant today. What an amazing song from the 80`s, which was my time. If I could travel back in time, the 80`s would be were I would be headed to. Those were the best days of My life! May God Have mercy on the USA during this horrible time.
Great song from a great era!
Admit it, everyone here has blasted this while driving at some point.
Doing it right now
Lord Have Mercy...(Kyrie Eleison)
I don't have a touching story with this song, I just heard it one day on the radio and instantly fell in love with it
..under rated song.. never gets old... 80's hits rule !
Love you GOD!!! and this song is awesome!!
This has been one of my most favorite songs since I was a kid. I used to think the lyrics were "Carrying a lazer down the road that I must travel. Carrying a lazer through the darkness of the night..." LOL! (now you'll probably not be able to un-hear those lyrics) It made sense to a 7 year old that loved sci-fi, and action movies. I learned the true lyrics, and the meaning behind them a few years ago, and have appreciated it even more ever since.
I'm 19 but I so wish I could have lived in the 80s but I love the date I was born in though and I am a huge 80s and 90s fan!
Kailey Llewellyn haha marry me pls 😍 80s best music decade for sure 👍 🎶
I had no idea how spiritual this song is! I thought it was a love song. Man, I had no idea. This song is special and even Christian.
Indeed and relevant any season of our lives
Those were the old times when music connected us from the deepest part of our soul.
I named my daughter, Kyrie, after this song 💗
I was a freshman in college in the fall of 1985 and I took a music composition class in which the final project was to write a motet in the form of a Kyrie Eleison and Christe Eleison. We learned all about the phrase and its place through centuries of music. Then when this song came out at the end of the year, I think I was the only person I knew that understood its meaning.
Great song from the 80s. This could pass for a Gospel or Christian rock music.
Still listening to this in 2016 ! Screw the trash on the radio.
A timeless song that will live on for generations to come. Also "Broken Wings".
This amazing song is pure energy and powerful motivation.
Back in the day when music meant something
One of the best vocals of 80's band...remember my teenager life. So nostalgic.
The intro is like something you hear as you enter heaven on a unicorn and are reunited with all your pets or when you're falling in love with a beautiful woman...just magical. If you're listening God bless you and I wish the best for you.
I never knew what Kyrie Eleison meant. now this song makes sense. great song!
I always thought "between the soul and soft machine" was "between the solace of the sheets" and "kyrie elesion" was "carrying a laser". turns out people weren't giving me those looks cause they were impressed by my vocals
Phenomenal song, they just don’t make them like this anymore, a pleasure listening to this 😊
❤❤❤❤
This has to be one of the greatest pop choruses ever written. Great song.
This Song Will NEVER Get Old!!!!!! I Can Play This On Hours Loop!!!! LOVE IT!!!!!! 😊😊😊💚💖💜
One of the best 80s' songs...
Wish I'd payed more attention to it back then. It's now one of all-time favorites.
This song speaks to me on so many levels. Today marks the 2 year anniversary since my dad’s passing and I have created during this time a playlist with all of my dad’s favourite songs, as it’s way to connect with him and reminisce. This song is one of his favourites, the lyrics give me hope and the song is the definition of soulful. Miss you dad💙💙
Thank you for your comment ! 🙂 👍
35 years went by and it's chorus still catches my ear.... pure 80's
Great song and thank you for explaining that Kyrie Eleison is Greek for Lord have mercy. It really helped me and my dad understand what the song means.
This is the perfect song for the 1980s. Melodic, light but with a positive sound, and the recognition and hope of a power greater in the universe to help us travel through life. To give strength and mercy. It’s impossible for me to believe this song would be written or come out today, but it lifts the spirit to know so many people look back to the better times like this in trying to create the future.
I was in college; back when music was music. Still lovin' it in 2023!
What a tune, what an era, what a decade!!! 80's best music of all time!!!
WANTED time machine to take me back to the 1980s
I remember finishing my training in Ft. Bragg and heard this song for the first time after many weeks away from civilization and feel in love with it.
God have Mercy on all of us during this time
I was 13 when this song came out and loved it. It has a very different meaning at age 50 and I love it even more.
Karen, I was stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia when this track came out. I was like 21-22, and this was around March of ‘86 when the song hit radio play. The album came out around October, 1985. I really liked “Kyrie”, although I was not a major fan of ‘80s music. When the song came out, I think about a month later, the tune “West End Girls” by the Pet Shop Boys was released.
I was 15 and feel as you do.Makes me think of my pops.
I must have been 11ish when it came out, and remember how much I loved that tape. Their best song ever.
..this tune is so uplifting--thanx Mr. Mister..
Why is 80's music so AWESOME?
It only took 40 years too Finally learn the lyrics to this song “KYRIE ELEISON”
Same here lol
@@thestrawberrygirl8085 i really had no idea what the lyrics were. Lol.
Man, I NEVER knew what the title of this song was! I saw it once, tried to remember...forgot!
This is one of the better pieces of 80's music
no,its way,way better than that. And the way they put this song together is truly mind numbing to say the least..
+1 for Greek (kyrie eleison) ! Opa!
I first heard this on the Goldbergs tv show. I loved this song ever since. I gives this great feeling of nostalgia!
This is blasting as I drive all night 🌌 from Milwaukee 🍻 to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada 🇨🇦 💔
Canada eh!!! ❤
This song reminds me of the nights whenever I was itty bitty with my mom and we would drive around the city blaring this song and singing as hard and passionate as we could. We loved this song and I miss those nights I cherished as a child.
I'm in my mid 20s, and the garbage they call music today is sh!t. The 80s was and is my jam!!
I was actually searching through praise/worship music in another program and came across a song with the same title so I looked this one up with the lyrics because, I too, had no idea what this song meant. I always loved this song growing up, but in the last 10 years or so - I have learned to pay more attention to the lyrics and what they mean. Now I know why I liked it so much! lol Lord Have Mercy!!!
No matter how many times I hear this out never grows tiresome. makes me think of those wonderful times
Would do anything to go back to those days
Mr mister wrote a classic, just a amazing song kind regards to them.
Brilliant, just brilliant, synthesizer use!!!! So 1980's!!!!
The industry wouldn't allow this song on radio now. Thank God, i grew up in the 80s ❤
Kyrie and Broken Wings made Mr Mister one of my favorite artist when I was a teenager. So glad I was a teen in the eighties and really miss that era!!
WHERE DID THESE SONGS GO OVER TIME, BRING ME A TIME MACHINE OF SOME SORT PLEASE AND THANK YOU
The 80,S was so far the best
This song is out of this world! Absolutely incredible!
God gave us all rock n roll put in the soul of everyone. Its BRILLIANT!
❤❤❤
Heard this in Sears tonight in 2019...........forgot about this song all these decades later! Can't believe I did. Remember hearing it all the time riding my bike with my Walkman on as a kid.
Knowing the meaning of the words, "Kyrie Eleison," makes me love this song even more.
LivanaFaolan AMEN
LivanaFaolan What’s even more fascinating, is I did NOT know what Kyrie Eleison meant and still this song carried a powerful spiritual energy for me when I listened to it.
Chris Alan likewise! I just found out what it meant a couple of days ago and it suddenly made sense why it always lifted me up!
Happy 63rd Birthday Steve Farris 5/1/1957 Guitar player.

Amazing how this is still SUCH a super-fav song to me after all these decades! ♫
I named my baby goat this song. We name all our baby goats after 80s songs. 🎉❤
I must say that it was really interesting and a good idea. "Goat family from the 80's 👍🙂

Truly one of the best 80's songs of all time
Could hear this thousands of times an never get tired of it. They performed 3/1/86 for The Great Peace March kick off and I don't think my feet were on the ground when they performed this. Still have the original CD
After all these years i finally understand the meaning of this song.Sorry it took me so long and it has been a favorite of mine from the beginning. And now i know makes it even better.
I just found out about this song also. What’s ironic is that I say Kyrie Eleison at Mass every Sunday.
Back when music, was real music! UA-cam is like a time capsule. It’s 4AM, and I’ve been spidering my way through an endless stream of nostalgic videos for hours. I’ll be an absolute wreck tomorrow, but I’m definitely enjoying myself, so it’ll be worth it!
Happy 2020 everyone 💞
My husband wanted me to find a song from the 80's that he didn't know the name of. He said it sounded like the lyrics say kiwi laser. That's how I found this song, kiwi laser. Now I can't unhear that but it's still an excellent song:)
Really great detective job from you. 👍
I mean, you found this song when you just searched for the words kiwi laser.😎
i too found it that why. I know the tune never realised it wasn't about a woman. Means Lord have mercy, I went the way of Marrilion ' Kayleigh' lmao
@@scottnever8732 Well, the main thing that the song was found. 🙂
I originally searched for “curie en laisse”
Glad I was born in 1979. Best music came from the 70s and 80s

Sorry for your loss.
I heard this song playing on 'Superstore', and here I am on repeat.
March, 1986 was a great time for Mr. Mister's "Kyrie"!
Great songs never die...
Never realised this song had a religious theme. Still a great song that takes me back to my childhood.
I’m not so sure it’s religious.
I've been looking all over for this song.
Well, I'm glad you found it. 🙂 👍
Damn I want the 80's back.
you and me both, pal.
It will always blow me away that he could sing like this without auto tune. 😂 *fangirling so hard* This is my favorite band.
