Multi block Lino Print with Laura: Episode 7 - How to Divide A Design into Blocks

  • In this epidode I am dividing up the design drawing into the different blocks needed to make a multiblock linocut print. I'm working with one master image and two interpretations: one graphic and one naturalistic to show different approaches to the same initial drawing. Today it is Buckinghamshire, but we will look at my design for Scotland too in a later episode.

Phew! That's very complicated and involved, but it shows what years of work and experience have allowed you to accomplish! I am absolutely loving watching these videos (as good as Netflix!), and I'm inspired to blow the dust off my lino tools. Looking forward to seeing the progress of your prints.

This is like a good thriller, I can’t wait for the plot (process) to unfold, or the final episode (final print) where all makes sense! I wasn’t really grasping it (as I know next to nothing about lino printing, apart from the fact I really want to have a go!) until you mentioned colour separations, which took me back to when I worked in the studio of an offset litho printers, which really helped. Looking forward to seeing how this unfolds! :) (PS if I do have a go, I’ll start with something simpler!)

There is a lot to think about for a beginner, but explained well and understandably. Many thanks.

Very interesting and as you said, "mind boggling", but I'm sure by the time you have lead us through your technique it will all start to make sense. So excited to see it all happen step by step, thank you so much for all your wonderful tuition.
Looking forward to your Live Stream on Friday!

Was assuming (wrongly) that this lino block method would be just blocks, but each plate turns to reductions as the printing goes on. This will be very interesting to see how you marry the two to the final image. So glad you weren't going to go the way of the 3-color-block greeting cards! Thank you for another thoughtfully and patiently done explanation.

Thank you Laura for all your videos, I’ve found them an inspiration during this lockdown. I’ve worked as an artist and illustrator all my working life, but never tried printmaking. Your videos have spurred me on to the extent that I’ve ordered and received most of my printmaking supplies from Handprinted and can’t wait to get started on my first image. I eagerly look forward to all your videos!!! Thank you again for all of your very clear instructions and advice.

Thanks for this Laura, now I know where I have been going wrong when I tried my first multi block and trying to line up the colours and ending up with lots of white bits that I didn't want . Using the blended layers approach is making much more sense now. Looking forward to the next couple of videos to see the prints develop.

Thank you Laura, I have just finished my first multi block print. I made a lot of mastakes, registration, too much ink, not thinking it through properly, and quite afew others. But nevertheless I enjoyed the process so I am very keen to see how you progress through to the final print, I like your planning and your expertise, I'm learning a lot. Thanks Richard

I'm loving this series, and learning a lot. Thank you for your generosity. One question I haven't quite resolved through rewatching segments -- are you doing a tracing on each piece of lino? i.e. not using a key block. That seems like what you are doing to me, but it would be lovely if you just clarified that. Many thanks. (Just ordered your registration device, AND new carving tools! yipee!)

Laura, although your explanations were clear and precise I found this one hard to grasp the fundamentals because, unlike you, I am not able to visualise how it all will come together at the end. I will have to be patient and hope that, when completed, I can both understand the process and be able to do the same on my own pieces. I will be very interested in how the overlapping ink colours form the final colour you are seeking. I live in hope. John

Hang in there John - I'm presenting the Scottish one in a different way - it's a tricky concept and I've planned a couple of explaining approaches which should cover differing learning styles

Laura, I am hanging in and absorbing ideas like a big sponge. It has occurred to me that my plan for a multi block would be to mix my inks to create the colour and cut the link to apply it. I would then do the same with the next colour and print with the risk, exactly as you pointed out in your video, that if the registration wasn’t perfect then there might be a white border or edge between the colours. Your process eliminates this but does require an understanding of how to create the final colour with several layers which is not a process that I am currently confident about. I promise to be patient, listen carefully and then try it out. The multi block technique does enable me to discard a block and do it again, if it isn’t what I want, which is why I currently prefer it until I acquire more knowledge/experience. John

Hello Laura... my brain has just exploded...I am looking forward to seeing how these prints develop. Can you tell me what type of tracing paper the block designs are printed on please? Is it paper or plastic? Also, were they printed on a laser or inkjet printer? Thank you...

Hi we used standard paper tracing paper and put it through our inkjet manual feed backed with a piece of print paper - fairly fiddly

Laura, separate question from this particular edition (linowithlaura 2) ... you've referred to "the first linowihlaura" series, but I can't find it - did you take it down? Thanks.
