    Station wagons are night and day better as a body style than crossovers.

      I agree, but Most people want that ride height, ground clearance, cargo height, and AWD.

      @DESAISAHEB I completely agree with you - the SportWagen has more cargo space than those subcompact crossovers, and you don't feel that you're sitting on it when you drive it, rather than sitting in it like a sedan or hatchback. I had a Ford Escape loaner and it felt like I was sitting on it while driving it, like a minivan.

      I agree. I think people also feel safer in suv or crossovers because of height. Personally I feel that a car that handles better is safer. With the SportWagen for example, when needed to maneuver in a pinch, it can with confidence. I’m not a fan of suvs and am not on the same page as most North American drivers

    Thank you so much for this clear review. It pretty much decided me on the gasoline version of the sportwagen. Your comparison to diesel was particularly helpful.

    I just picked up a sportwagen 4motion with the 6 speed manual it is quite impressive. It handles well can be driven spirited or composed. And the transmission is a dream to shift.

    Mr. Motormouth gives a good review but he is wrong about the difference between the 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TDI engines. He said he was leaning to the TSI because the efficiency is almost the same. We have and 2017 Alltrack with the 1.8 TSI and a 2015 Sportwagen TDI, both with manual transmissions. I track every drop of gas with fuelly.com. Our Alltrack consistently gets 29 mpg and the low 30s when traveling. While the Sportwagen gets 49 mpg around town and 55 mpg doing 75 mph. The TDI gets well over 600 miles on its 13.5 gallon tank. We used to have a 2009 Jetta Sportwagen TDI and it averaged around 36 mpg. Mr. Motormouth must have assumed the new mk7 TDIs get similar mpg to the old TDIs. The no longer available Golf Sportwagen TDI gets way more mpg than the Sportwagen TSI. And today regular is $2.56/gal and diesel is $1.99. On the highway my Sportwagen TDI gets slightly better mpg than a Prius, but is much larger and more comfortable.

    AWD diesel wagon with a manual transmission is the ultimate hipster machine! That said, I think it's waaaay better than any CUV on the market and I'd gladly own one! Great review btw but a bit too short considering the interest in this car :)

    Any thoughts on the reliability of the gas models (TSI)? How about the feel of the automatic vs. manual in the TSI? Now that diesels are out of the equation, there are some more fine grained questions about TSI models to address.

    R we going to get the AWD version? VW Canada stopped the Passat 4 motion from being imported here, so I moved to BMW and bought the 328d Touring, however, if VW bring in the AWD Golf, I might be tempted back in the future.

      Yes, when I see and get into my '15 SE TSI Sportwagen is still looks classy 5 years later. Audi lite.
      The 170 hp and 199 tor are awesome and the reg 6 sp auto is great. I think they are made in Japan. 45k miles and no issues with car.

    I have a 2015 Golf 1.8t as my daily and the ratios are awkward. You can't comfortably cruise at 50km/h. In 4th you're lugging it, and in 3rd you're revving it a bit too high. And if you lug it, fuel economy goes out the window, I've noticed. I love how low it revs on highway speeds (just under 2,000rpm at 110 km/h) but would trade 500rpms on highway speeds for better ratios.

  • @WillBegoable
    @WillBegoable 9 років тому +1

    But the millage is not the same, or even close. The EPA butchers diesel numbers.
    The TDI should be rated 36/50 not EPA's 31/42. Most TDI drivers get 50+ mpg on the highway, and 41-45 mixed. The TSI engine will likely get 40 mpg on the highway, but I don't see city cresting much over 25 and combined hovering around 30-32.
    So in real life driving a 30-40% increase is pretty significant, combine that with diesel fuel coming to regular gas (or lower) prices....
    Not saying the TSI is a bad engine, its not, but the TDI has a very good reason to exist!

    Wait, so do you get a DSG with the 1.8T? I was told it was just a regular auto. Also, what are you thoughts on the fact that the Golf (hatchback) TDI comes with torsion beam style suspension? Bit of a deal breaker? (specially since you say that the 1.8T is almost as efficient).

    • @Motormouth...
      @Motormouth...  9 років тому

      MatchuCT Should have been clearer. The 1.8 gets a regular 6-speed auto, TDI gets DSG and has independent suspension, unlike the Golf hatch.

    • @MatchuCT

      Motormouth Canada Thanks for hte quick reply! Also, how is interior quality? The problem I found was past generation was that the interior was based more on the Jetta and was of lower quality than the golf. How does this one feel?
      Can't wait to try one in a few years. Currently own an Outback, but it can feel really heavy and drink a lot of gas some times.... (all the time). Looking for something a bit nicer, and maybe keep the wagon trend going. That, or a regular golf.

    • @Motormouth...
      @Motormouth...  9 років тому

      MatchuCT As I mentioned in the video, I have covered this car for a long time. Go and watch the other videos on the Golf for more interior comments. This is a very nice interior, in 2016 it will get a bigger radio screen and a few other features but the interior is very nice, nothing like the older cars.

      Motormouth Canada Doesn't the TDI get a torsion-beam axle for the rear suspension? That's my conundrum -- I want a Golf Sportwagen with DSG and IRS (as well as AWD), and VW seems to have made a point not to combine the two.

      Buck Futter TDI gets the DSG, there was an edit in the video that could have been better.

  • @yippie6862
    @yippie6862 9 років тому

    The DSG transmission doesn't come with the 1.8t engine, it only comes with the diesel model. The 1.8T model gets the standard 6 speed automatic or 5 speed manual. The diesel model doesn't use the independent rear suspension that the 1.8T version gets. VW says it is because there was no room left using the new urea tank for diesel emissions. Others believe it's just a cost savings method to lower the entry level price of the diesel model. 1.8T vs diesel? Choices Choices.

    As much as I like the cars VW makes I also hate VW for doing all these cost saving tricks on cars they sell in North America. First of all we don't even get real Passat. I think the Passat they sell in Europe is much better. They try to justify it but it is all about cost and I am really curious if they it worked out for them as they hoped. Secondly, the cars they bring are always equipped poorly or has outdated technologies. It is unbelievable. I think they assume that people don't care. But I think they are wrong. It is really a deal breaker for me to know the distance they can go to save money or make more of it. You can never be sure what else they didn't put on your car which exist in European version. It makes you think about the quality. I really wanna know if we are getting same bolts and nuts as European versions.

      You are absolutely right, but unfortunately VWs are way more expensive in europe. Such a wagon with all specs you get in n-america costs beyond 30k € over here.

      Well beyond 30k indeed. I think it's overpriced if you order all the extra trinkets. If one doesn't order it then the near luxury feel of the car won't come out well I feel.

    Hi Zack,
    Just a small question, why do you believe in this wagon and not in the Volvo V60??
    Another thing for you to think about, in one of your Q&A episode you make a big deal about the metric system and then you use Inches and the torque is not measured in Newton meters, how come?? Is it the same reason that you in Canada use the metric system unless you buy a house, then it's suddenly square feet, God knows why???
    By the way Zack, I really like what you are doing!!
    Cheers
    Henrik

    • @Motormouth...
      @Motormouth...  9 років тому

      Henrik Wass The main reason this car will sell is that it has been for sale in Canada for many, many years, the Volvo is a new entry and A LOT more expensive. Torque is still reported by manufacturers here in lb.-ft. I know it makes no sense, but the way it is....

    Who gives a shit if a 1.6-ltr gas engine gets near the same mileage as a TDI? Who wants to be changing spark plugs and wires every 30K miles or chronically revving the snot out of the engine to achieve any forward thrust? Gasoline is for the racy boys and their super-cars.
