Outer Range Season 1 Ending Explained

  • It was only a matter of time until Outer Range made predictable use of its core phenomenon, a hole that occurs somewhere in Royal Abbot's western pasture and-pun very much intended-almost everywhere in the storyline of the novel. (This is on purpose.)

    I knew Autumn was Amy when they first spoke to each other. Amy looked 9 years old and Autumn couldn't remember anything before 9. And then the way the camera would switch to Amy from Autumn or vice versa. And the show obviously was going to deal with time travel. Wasn't hard to connect that lol

  • @42Channel42
    @42Channel42 Рік тому +5

    The show is about how pain and suffering get transferred down the generations and how unresolved sins from past generations haunt and destroy families today. Royal is named “royal” because he is symbolic of his family’s bloodline. Many problems in families can be traced backwards through previous generations, like a black abyss that lives in everyone’s heart going back through time. That’s why The Hole in the West Pasture is a black hole full of literal time.
    The show teaches it’s possible to escape the evil destiny cast on us by our “grandfathers” by escaping “the old family” and starting a “new family.” Like what Rebecca tried to do, and what Rhett and Maria seem to be able to do at the end of the first season… although they are still chased and left stranded by the Buffalo, which represent time. Time is a symbol for generational pain/sin. It’s very difficult to escape past family trauma and the dark abyss inside some families. But there is hope… as Rhett shows as the “local hero” when he rides the bull with a broken shoulder and wins the girl at the end.
    It’s an amazingly deep and mythic show. There is way more than all that going on. Tons and tons of symbols. Very deep and powerful lessons. But primarily it’s a drama about escaping generational family abuse.

    Another scene of the future would have been nice to see. Like, what is going on with the other brother that's in the future now... or why they had so many oil rigs and a countdown clock. I watched Royal walk around and not say much for what seemed like half the season. It's like the writers don't know where to go with this whole plot or they have another season planned. On another note, at the end when the wife flips the table, I thought she was going to reveal a trap door with another hole that's been under the house the whole time. Her family has been on that property for generations, she has to know about the weird stuff going on.

    • @AllYourBaseAreBelongToU5
      @AllYourBaseAreBelongToU5 2 роки тому +2

      I’d say the countdown clock implies the BY9 Mining corporation is able to determine when the hole will open up, which is why everyone was there waiting. My gut feeling is that Cecilia, Autumn, and Rhett were expecting to see Perry emerge, not Royal. I would imagine the special dust is being mined. How it is used is anyone’s guess. Maybe they’ve developed a way to calculate when the portal opens and closes.
      I did read that BY9 might mean “Before Year 9,” which would be a reference to missing memories before the age of 9 for both Royal and Autumn (older Amy).

    The ending was given away in the first couple of episodes. The only thing to hang around for was the scifi mystery which wasn't resolved or addressed much. I felt angry for wading through it but I have a friend who worked on art design for the show and it looked great. The plot could have fit in a 2 hour indie movie. Grandpa mystery meets a mystery girl who can't remember anything before she was 9. There is a 9 year old grand daughter. Can't be her can it? the other sub plots are pure fizzle.

    Really dissatisfied that so little had answers and so much was left completely unexplained. To me writing like this is pathetic. When someone writes something so full of questions and says you have to use your imagination it's a sign of a bad writer. If using your imagination was sound then there would be no reason for movies books or games. When you write something, finish it.

      @@ariimoanacotter2873 There's no justification for writing something and keeping everything open ended. I wouldn't mind if they gave us new mysteries before the end of the show to keep us interested between seasons. But to write an entire season with no resolutions or answers and then in the final 2 episodes add even more questions is ridiculous writing. It shows the writers didn't even fully understand what they were trying to write or how to Finnish it. And the argument of using your imagination is invalid.
