- Watercolor Pouring Backgrounds Tutorial. Using three colors I will share how to use the watercolor pouring method to create a soft atmospheric background. Resulting in beautiful color mixes of golden yellow, lilac, and a cinnamon peach! By learning how to pour a soft background you can begin to add watercolor pouring to your artwork and take some frustration out of creating soft back drops. I will also share how to correct back runs/blossoms/blooms that are a common issue in watercolor pouring.

You are my new favorite UA-cam channel. I’m in love with your style… you make it look so easy! Thanks so much for sharing all your talent and knowledge! If you ever decide to come up to Canada to teach a workshop let me know!
Thanks so much - this made me so happy to read! 😊 I have never visited Canada, that would be such a dream! Will do 😍
@@watercolorpour you would love Alberta! We have the mountains in Banff and the wild horses. Both are magical.
Gorgeous soft background and a beautiful painting. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks so much 😊
How lovely!
Love it, thanks for sharing
yep ... going to be trying this one :-) thanks for the inspiration
Wow wow wow! Thanks so much for showing us!
That would be a great design for a textile too. Love your work. Beautiful.
Thank you! I have often considered using the pours for that as well. They are so soft and pretty, hard to capture in the video. 😀
¡Bellísimo! gracias por compartir
Soft and lovely! Thank you for sharing..
Amazing 😮❤️
Fabulous ❤️
Thanks
Wow I love what you were doing with that simple background pour! I am always in background hell and your method just lit a fire under me. I am going to give this a try. Thank you for the inspiration.
Brilliant! So thankful for the inspiration given and received 😊
Stunning! Thank you or the great tips and demos!
So happy you enjoyed the video 😀
Gorgeous! Thank you.

Love this idea. Thank you❤❤
This is just beautiful 😍
Thank you! 😀😀😀
Very nice! Great colors and liked the subtle stencil you did to add to the overall look.
Thank you Barb, so happy you liked it.
Just what I was looking for, thank you!
Great to hear!
What a fabulous background! Thank you for sharing your techniques. I love the blooms and feel lucky every time I get one but it it's good to know how to soften them. The subtle addition of the white really adds a lot and I absolutely love the foliage you painted. Gorgeous!
Thank you! 😀😀😀
wonderful, charm and exquisite !!
Thank you for watching!
Beautiful ❤
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful background. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
Glad to see you back on UA-cam
Hi Patti, good to be back, getting settled into my new space here, and trying to get back to painting 😊😊
This is a fabulous video!
Thank you!
Nice technique. As a photographer, I'm going to have to make a bunch of these to put behind my subjects!
Would be so beautiful! You can use print companies to blow them up into backdrops! Could even make seasonal ones - so fun! Do you have an instagram would love to check out your work
Thanks again…I do watercolor cards in a similar manner.. sure want to try the stencils
Hi Paula, it is so fun and rewarding - hope you enjoy it as much as I do
Molto interessante
I love this Buffy! Thank you for sharing. Love that you added the tip for softening blooms. I do something similar, but hadn’t tried the rewetting after softening. Your video just popped up on my UA-cam feed this morning and so happy I found you. Now heading over to Instagram to tag you on some recent Florida sunsets I’ve been doing using a similar concept and a few more brush strokes. 🙏Blessings to you!
Beautiful sunsets 🌅!
@@watercolorpour thank you Buffy!
Hahahahaha Charmin tp! That was hilarious 🤣💞
Another artist I follow calls it artist’s tissue🤣🤣🤣 I just started using Charmin myself for watercolor and I’m loving it. Blessings to you!
😅🤣
Beautiful Buffy - a lovely background that seems to glow contrasting with the foliage ❤️ Are the leaves eucalyptus?
Thank you, yes it’s eucalyptus
Really enjoying learning all these new techniques.
Do you stretch your paper before working or just tape it down?
16" x 20" and down I do not stretch/ just tape. For larger paintings I stretch, staple, and tape.
Hi Buffy, I just discovered you! Loved this video and learned so much. I always have a difficult time with backgrounds, but you've inspired me to start pouring them! Really appreciate your tip on how to soften the blooms. So useful, thank you. I was wondering about that stencil you used. I love it! Can you give me some info on it. Thanks so much.
Glad it was helpful, pouring can be a real game changer, skies, backgrounds, just wonderful fun! The stencil I designed and cut myself.
New subscriber, looking for card inspiration!😍
Thanks for subbing! Hope this adds to your artistic toolbox! 🙂
I love this painting. How did you make your stencil? It adds a lovely dimension. Thanks
Thank you for your interest in the stencils. I design and hand cut my own stencils with small scissors or use a Cricut Machine to cut out the more intricate designs. Here is a one minute video sharing how I use the Cricut to cut them. ua-cam.com/users/shortsfXr3RB6odWI

I just found you and love your pour style! What is that black “hair sprayer” you used? I have 5 different sprayers, but your seems to be more of a “mister’.
it is called a fine spray mister, you can find them on my amazon affiliate art page here: www.amazon.com/shop/watercolorpour/list/32Z59XEJOMUZ8
I loved this video! What brand of stencil did you use? It’s one that is very versatile and could be used for a lot of botanical paintings.
I make many of my stencils and have a few favorites that are pre-made - here is a link to my Amazon Influencer page, many supplies and stencil faves can be found there: Stencils, Stamps and Stencil Cutting Supplies: www.amazon.com/shop/watercolorpour/list/SSEMGEBCOJUL?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ons_mixed_d
Great video, thank you! Question - How long do you allow the background to dry before adding either more wash or painted detail? I've had trouble with the background paint blending with the newly added paint.
I allow it to dry completely
Just found you and love this. I’m new to all this, what did you use to tape down your paper and what is it taped to? Thank you ❣️
Thank you for watching, I used scotch tape to tape my paper to a Artboard by Robax. (go to Robax.com to learn more, go to palettes and then scroll towards bottom to find)
Hi there, can you tell me what you’re using to keep your watercolor paper in place and flat while you paint? Thanks so much!!
Scotch tape ☺️ on smaller paintings it does the trick
Ti ho scoperta da poco... sei strepitosa
Grazie mille 🤍🤍🤍
How do you use the stenciling? Are you putting down or removing paint?
I am removing paint, I call this technique stencil lifting
How do you make these stencils Buffy?
I hope to do a video on this soon, in the meantime be sure to check out my Amazon Art page sharing some of my favorite stencils and stencil making supplies. Hi! Congratulations! To get Pouring in watercolor do You add some special ingredient to the colors like silicona or something else? Thanks a Lot for your information and greeting from Mexico!!
just water and paint 😍 thank you! Be sure to wet your paper well, and then pour your paints and can spray lightly with water to help it move as needed
@@watercolorpour thanks a Lot!!!!
Beautiful background. I always struggle with them. I never know what to do or how to. And if I should do the background first or what? Could you tell me the brand of the misting water bottle with the black lid? Ty I'm going to try some of these.
It is a no name brand, Amazon carries them as “fine spray misters” 😀
@@watercolorpour oh ok ty.
I'll look for one
Many of the art supplies I use are listed on my Amazon art page here www.amazon.com/shop/watercolorpour
@@watercolorpour ok thanks so much for the info 😁
What's the difference between hot and cold press? Best uses for?
with my style of painting it seems the cold press does better with wet painting, (wet on wet, watercolor pouring) and the hot press works better with direct painting, wet on dry paper, sketching and painting , where less water is used.
👍👍👍💕💕💕🇩🇰
thank you Karen!
Will this work on cold press?
Yes I think it works best on cold press 😍
@@watercolorpour thanks so much for the quick reply! I tried it with Cobalt teal and Raw Umber for a western background on a watercolor horse I’m working on. It came out GORGEOUS. Thank you!
Buffy, Where can I purchase a Robax board. Thx
Hi Terri, here is the link, scroll towards the bottom, it is called a Artboard by Robax: www.robax.com/palettes.html
Why are there blooms? I get them every time. What is the "mistake"?
too much water
yes, too much water left on the paper.
