- This is an aerial montage of various locations around AROB--starting near the Buka Channel and generally flying our way south-east down the eastern coast of the island; concentrating mostly on the areas around Panguna, Arawa, Kieta and Koromira.

I basically grew up on Bougainville,went to Bovo Primary School (A Mr Kelly) was our teacher & we lived in Arawa.
My father worked at the Panguna Mine as a senior foreman (Earthworks & Planning).
Absolutely loved the weekend's at Loloho Beach & going over to Arovo Island.. I still remember the hotel on Arovo as you come in off the beach.
I can honestly say,the best childhood i ever had was on Bougainville & the saddest part was having to move back to Australia in 1977.
As General Douglas Mcarthur said... "I shall return".. Hopefully in 2023.
Yes, it was a great place to have spent one's childhood in the 70s and 80s! The Arovo resort was a treat to visit and have lunch on the beach. The hornbills liked to steal your chips though. Hope you make it back--it's well worth the trip!

Wow - thanks for the memories. A drone can cover so much more ground (and sea).. I loved living, working, sailing and snorkeling there in the 80's but didn't do much photography. Silly me.
Worked for BCL up in Panguna 79-83 4 great years on this magnificent island. Exceptional drone work mate.

That's great! There's still a lot of war relics around the island--mostly Japanese tanks, AA and anti-ship cannons. There are some American bunkers around Torokina.

Hello Skybourne Visions, as an old (literally) former Bougainville resident I'd love to use a few stills from this excellent video. I am in the process of making a Bougainville web site (none commercial - mainly for the use of other old former Bougainville residents or the people of Bougainville). Yes it is on clear days. I did enhance some colors but the blues are pretty similar to original.

What did you use to charge your batteries. Do they have mains electricity or us generators ?
Thanks. The towns of Arawa and Buka have 240V 50Hz electricity. Many people still have diesel generators as backup. Up in the mountains, many villages also now have hydro-electricity (which is an irony compared to conditions prior to the Crisis) as the locals have taken generators from the mining equipment, hooked them up to water wheels (usually fins welded to wheel hubs), which are then spun by the mountain streams (usually channeled through PVC pipe for increased velocity). The electricity is then run though voltage regulators and large capacitors to provide pretty stable power to the local village.

Thanks for the video. According to google Mavara islet and the surrounding islands are owned by Solomon Islands. Is it a problem to get there from Bouganville?
I noticed that google maps has labelled this island as Mawara. I'm not aware that this island is part of the Solomon Islands. The border between Bougainville and the Solomons is further south, but the Solomon Islands like Oema are visible from Mawara. The neighboring Solomon Islands have pretty much an open border with the locals on Bougainville, and there's a lot of boat traffic across that border. If you're not a Bougainvillean; it's best advised to get a visa from the Solomon Islands first.

Hi. Did you need any permission to go to Mavara Islet from Bougainville? That's Solomon territory right?
No permission needed. The island is about 9 miles North-West of the nearest portion of border with the Solomon Islands, which cuts halfway between Otua Island and the nearest Solomon Islands (Oema Atoll)... and then runs North-East from there to 6° 19’ 00”S 156° 16’ 30”E.

@@SavageDragon999 I don't believe there's any formal boat renting, but I do know someone based in Koromira that runs a water taxi service down there.
@@SkyborneVisions thank you very much. I think I'm confusing a bit here because on Google map when I put mavara island it points me to a small island in the Shortland islands group. Based on your comment I think the Mavara island in your video is actually East of bougainville?
@@SavageDragon999 Mavara was the name the locals gave me; so perhaps not official... it was also called "Crisis Island" since it formed during the Bougainville Crisis. This is definitely not anywhere near the Shortland Islands. It's an island that didn't even exist 20 years ago, but after a major storm, a sandbar formed on the Uwero reef just north of Otua Island. As you can see in the video it now also has trees. But yes, this is almost directly east of southern Koromira: 6 miles North-East of the mouth of the Loloru River (Laluai Point).

Australia please help West Papua, these are the oldest inhabitants of any region the world, no one had the right to split the island down the middle in a straight line, this one is common sense, their philosophies are also the least accepting of others on top of racism.
